Changes in female labor supply in Argentina: 2003-2009

This paper examines the extent to which married women’s labor supply elasticities have changed over the period 2003- 2009. We analyze female labor force participation and labor supply in Argentina. While male elasticities tend to be little, we find evidence of larger substitution effects on women’s labor supply. Female response to changes in own wages and non labor income is considerably more sensitive than male’s response. We also get some evidence of a decline in female wage elasticities over time

Teaching how to argue in high school: the case of Philosophy

Diversas investigaciones en diferentes contextos educativos han evidenciado las dificultades de los estudiantes de escuelas secundarias para comprender textos de cierta complejidad y para fundamentar la propia postura ante diversos contenidos disciplinares. En Argentina, los estudios se han focalizado en estudios diagnósticos sobre la comprensión de textos narrativos y expositivos, pero no en los efectos de la implementación de propuestas didácticas que favorezcan la comprensión y producción de textos argumentativos. En este artículo, se sintetizan los resultados de una investigación colaborativa, realizada en una escuela secundaria pública del noroeste argentino, cuyo objetivo fue el diseño, implementación y evaluación de estrategias didácticas que priorizan el desarrollo de prácticas argumentativas dialógicas para promover el pensamiento crítico-en sentido amplio- (Paul y Elder, 2003), en el aprendizaje de la Filosofía. Se triangularon resultados obtenidos de tres fuentes de datos: producciones estudiantiles, perspectivas de los estudiantes y del docente, y las secuencias didácticas implementadasResearch in different educational contexts has shown the difficulties that high school students have understanding texts of a certain complexity and substantiating their own positions regarding several disciplinary contents. In Argentina, studies have focused on diagnostic studies on the understanding of narrative and expositive texts, but not on the effects of the implementation of teaching initiatives that favor the understanding and production of argumentative texts. In this article, we synthesise the results of a collaborative research, carried out in a public high school in the northwest of Argentina, whose objective was the design, implementation and evaluation of teaching strategies that prioritise the development of dialogical argumentative practices in order to promote critical thinking - in a broad sense- (Paul and Elder, 2003), when learning Philosophy. Optimización del Transporte de Caña de Azúcar en Tucumán utilizando Sistemas Multiagentes

El presente trabajo pretende mostrar el desarrollo de un modelo matemático y un Sistema Multiagentes para la optimización del transporte de caña de azúcar, desde el productor cañero hasta el ingenio. Llevar a cabo esta optimización implica considerar factores tales como la eficiencia de producción de caña, el rendimiento de los ingenios, los costos de transporte, etc., que hacen de la misma un problema complejo. Nuestra propuesta intenta maximizar el balance energético del sistema, teniendo en cuenta varias restricciones operativas, buscando un sistema escalable y paralelizable debido al tamaño y complejidad del problema. El sistema se prueba con datos sintéticos, y se compara con otro similar basado en Programación Lineal desarrollado en trabajos anteriores. Los resultados muestran que la herramienta es adecuada para el sistema planteado, obteniendo resultados similares en mucho menos tiempo.Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativ

Identification of Genes under Positive Selection Reveals Differences in Evolutionary Adaptation between Brown-Algal Species

Brown algae are an important taxonomic group in coastal ecosystems. The model brown algal species Ectocarpus siliculosus and Saccharina japonica are closely related lineages. Despite their close phylogenetic relationship, they vary greatly in morphology and physiology. To obtain further insights into the evolutionary forces driving divergence in brown algae, we analyzed 3,909 orthologs from both species to identify Genes Under Positive Selection (GUPS). About 12% of the orthologs in each species were considered to be under positive selection. Many GUPS are involved in membrane transport, regulation of homeostasis, and sexual reproduction in the small sporophyte of E. siliculosus, which is known to have a complex life cycle and to occupy a wide range of habitats. Genes involved in photosynthesis and cell division dominated the group of GUPS in the large kelp of S. japonica, which might explain why this alga has evolved the ability to grow very rapidly and to form some of the largest sporophytes. A significant number of molecular chaperones (e.g., heat-shock proteins) involved in stress responses were identified to be under positive selection in both species, potentially indicating their important roles for macroalgae to cope with the relatively variable environment of coastal ecosystems. Moreover, analysis of previously published microarray data of E. siliculosus showed that many GUPS in E. siliculosus were responsive to stress conditions, such as oxidative and hyposaline stress, whereas our RNA-seq data of S. japonica showed that GUPS in this species were most highly expressed in large sporophytes, which supports the suggestion that selection largely acts on different sets of genes in both marcoalgal species, potentially reflecting their adaptation to different ecological niches
