    Multiple polar and non‐polar nematic phases.

    Liquid-crystal materials exhibiting up to three nematic phases are reported. Dielectric response measurements show that while the lower temperature nematic phase has ferroelectric order and the highest temperature nematic phase is apolar, the intermediate phase has local antiferroelectric order. The modification of the molecular structure by increasing the number of lateral fluorine substituents leads to one of the materials showing a direct isotropic-ferronematic phase transition

    Ferroelectric nematogens containing a methylthio group.

    The synthesis and characterisation of eight nematogens containing a terminal methylthio group is reported. The compounds are based on RM734 and differ in the number and position of fluorine substituents, and in the position of the lateral methoxy substituent. Seven of these compounds exhibit a monotropic ferroelectric nematic phase, NF, including examples of NF-isotropic phase transitions. Two of the compounds show the anti-ferroelectric NX phase. Their transitional behaviour is discussed in terms of molecular shape and changes in electronic properties. Their phase behaviour is similar to that of the corresponding compounds containing a terminal methoxy group, but the methoxy terminated materials consistently show the higher transition temperatures. This is accounted for by the larger reduction in molecular shape anisotropy associated with the methylthio group, and the associated change in the electronic properties. The NX phase seen for the methylthio substituted compounds are thought to reflect the suppression of the NF phase by the methylthio group rather than any specific stabilising effect. Specific interactions between methylthio groups thought to stabilise nematic behaviour do not appear to stabilise the NF phase

    Heliconical nematic and smectic phases: the synthesis and characterisation of the CB4O.m and CB8O.m series.

    The synthesis and characterisation of two series of nonsymmetric dimers belonging to the family of compounds, the 1-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4â€Č-yl)-ω-(4-alkylanilinebenzylidene-4â€Č-oxy)alkanes (CBnO.m) is reported; in the acronym, n refers to the number of carbon atoms in the spacer, and m in the terminal alkyl chain. The two series reported, CB4O.m and CB8O.m, both show twist-bend nematic (NTB) and smectic phases (SmCTB-SH and SmCTB-DH). Their phase behaviour is compared to that of the CB6O.m and CB10O.m series. For each series, locally intercalated molecular packing is observed for short terminal chains and interdigitated packing for long terminal chains. The intercalated anticlinic smectic CA phase is observed for the CB8O.m and CB10O.m series. All four series exhibit the SmCTB-SH and SmCTB-DH phases for the longer terminal chains and all have an interdigitated molecular arrangement. The absence of an intercalated heliconical phase is attributed to the high viscosity associated with the network intercalated structure

    To be or not to be polar: the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric nematic phases.

    We report two new series of compounds that show the ferroelectric nematic, NF, phase in which the terminal chain length is varied. The longer the terminal chain, the weaker the dipole–dipole interactions of the molecules are along the director and thus the lower the temperature at which the axially polar NF phase is formed. For homologues of intermediate chain lengths, between the non-polar and ferroelectric nematic phases, a wide temperature range nematic phase emerges with antiferroelectric character. The size of the antiparallel ferroelectric domains critically increases upon transition to the NF phase. In dielectric studies, both collective ("ferroelectric") and non-collective fluctuations are present, and the "ferroelectric" mode softens weakly at the N–NX phase transition because the polar order in this phase is weak. The transition to the NF phase is characterized by a much stronger lowering of the mode relaxation frequency and an increase in its strength, and a typical critical behavior is observed

    Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.

    BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF.     The present work was carried out in order to study: a - the effect of omission and presence of the macronutrients and boron on the growth of the plants; b - deficiency symptoms of macronutrients, as well of boron; c - the effect of the deficiency of each nutrient on the chemical composition of the plants. Young spinach plants were grown in pots containing pure quartz sand. Several times a day the plants were irrigated by percolation with nutrient solutions. The treatments were: complete solution and deficient solution, in which each one of the macronutrients was omitted as well boron.     Epiphytic diatom communities on Phyllophora antarctica from the Ross Sea

    Antarctic seaweeds play an important ecological role, but the vast macroalgal beds, typical of the shallow-water zone, are not efficiently grazed. However, macroalgal thalli are covered by epiphytic diatoms which represent a rich food source for higher trophic levels. We describe the abundances, growth form structure, species composition and distribution patterns in the diatom communities associated with Phyllophora antarctica from selected sites within the Ross Sea. The goal of this work was to learn more about the relationships between various components of the epiphytic community and its habitat. To examine diatoms at the microscale, four relatively well described sampling sites were chosen and analyses were performed on a large number of diatoms. All observations and counts were made with the scanning electron microscope. Samples collected in the same season but from different sites and under different sea and ice conditions differed significantly in terms of species composition, but all represented abundant and well-developed diatom communities. A list of species associated with P. antarctica from the investigated area is provided and the influence of the sampling effort on the observed diatom diversity is assessed
