    An Analysis of How the Internet has Changed Photography and the Profession of Photojournalism

    Photography and the photojournalism profession [HR1] is ever-changing due to the Internet. Technological advances allow photographers to use the Internet to their and their publication’s advantage. Along with positive effects of the Internet, there are also negative consequences. The positive and negative aspects intertwine, and it can be difficult for photojournalists to do their jobs due to the negative consequences. This study focused on these positive and negative effects, as well as the personal tolls that photojournalists continue to face daily. The aim of this study was to determine the positive and negative effects of the Internet on photojournalism through a qualitative analysis by interviewing a dozen photojournalists and utilizing information from other databases. The subjects were asked a series of questions that focused on how the Internet is changing the work of photojournalists and the profession as a whole. This study will provide a better understanding of whether photojournalists have had to change their profession because of technological advances and the Internet. Ultimately, the photojournalists agreed that while the Internet is a great tool for photographers to use, there are harmful effects to the profession and the job of a photojournalist. These include others stealing photographers’ images, the manipulation of photos through editing software, and a decline in compensation. The art form of photojournalism is fading due to the Internet.     The monetary value of diets consumed by British adults: an exploration into sociodemographic differences in individual-level diet costs

    OBJECTIVE: To describe the diet costs of adults in the National Diet and Nutrition Study (NDNS) and explore patterns in costs according to sociodemographic indicators. DESIGN: Cross-sectional diet diary information was matched to a database of food prices to assign a cost to each food or non-alcoholic beverage consumed. Daily diet costs were calculated, as well as costs per 10 MJ to improve comparability across differing energy requirements. Costs were compared between categories of sociodemographic variables and health behaviours. Multivariable regression assessed the effects of each variable on diet costs after adjustment. SETTING: The NDNS is a rolling dietary survey, recruiting a representative UK sample each year. The study features data from 2008-2010. SUBJECTS: Adults aged 19 years or over were included. The sample consisted of 1014 participants. RESULTS: The geometric mean daily diet cost was £2·89 (95 % CI £2·81, £2·96). Energy intake and daily diet cost were strongly associated. The mean energy-adjusted cost was £4·09 (95 % CI £4·01, £4·18) per 10 MJ. Energy-adjusted costs differed significantly between many subgroups, including by sex and household income. Multivariable regression found significant effects of sex, qualifications and occupation (costs per 10 MJ only), as well as equivalized household income, BMI and fruit and vegetable consumption on diet costs. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first time that monetary costs have been applied to the diets of NDNS adults. The findings suggest that certain subgroups in the UK - for example those on lower incomes - consume diets of lower monetary value. Observed differences were mostly in the directions anticipated

    L-systems in Geometric Modeling

    We show that parametric context-sensitive L-systems with affine geometry interpretation provide a succinct description of some of the most fundamental algorithms of geometric modeling of curves. Examples include the Lane-Riesenfeld algorithm for generating B-splines, the de Casteljau algorithm for generating Bezier curves, and their extensions to rational curves. Our results generalize the previously reported geometric-modeling applications of L-systems, which were limited to subdivision curves.Comment: In Proceedings DCFS 2010, arXiv:1008.127

    Improved myocardial scar visualization with fast free-breathing motion-compensated black-blood T<sub>1</sub>-rho-prepared late gadolinium enhancement MRI.

    Clinical guidelines recommend the use of bright-blood late gadolinium enhancement (BR-LGE) for the detection and quantification of regional myocardial fibrosis and scar. This technique, however, may suffer from poor contrast at the blood-scar interface, particularly in patients with subendocardial myocardial infarction. The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical performance of a two-dimensional black-blood LGE (BL-LGE) sequence, which combines free-breathing T &lt;sub&gt;1&lt;/sub&gt; -rho-prepared single-shot acquisitions with an advanced non-rigid motion-compensated patch-based reconstruction. Extended phase graph simulations and phantom experiments were performed to investigate the performance of the motion-correction algorithm and to assess the black-blood properties of the proposed sequence. Fifty-one patients (37 men, 14 women; mean age, 55 ± 15 [SD] years; age range: 19-81 years) with known or suspected cardiac disease prospectively underwent free-breathing T &lt;sub&gt;1&lt;/sub&gt; -rho-prepared BL-LGE imaging with inline non-rigid motion-compensated patch-based reconstruction at 1.5T. Conventional breath-held BR-LGE images were acquired for comparison purposes. Acquisition times were recorded. Two readers graded the image quality and relative contrasts were calculated. Presence, location, and extent of LGE were evaluated. BL-LGE images were acquired with full ventricular coverage in 115 ± 25 (SD) sec (range: 64-160 sec). Image quality was significantly higher on free-breathing BL-LGE imaging than on its breath-held BR-LGE counterpart (3.6 ± 0.7 [SD] [range: 2-4] vs. 3.9 ± 0.2 [SD] [range: 3-4]) (P &lt;0.01) and was graded as diagnostic for 44/51 (86%) patients. The mean scar-to-myocardium and scar-to-blood relative contrasts were significantly higher on BL-LGE images (P &lt; 0.01 for both). The extent of LGE was larger on BL-LGE (median, 5 segments [IQR: 2, 7 segments] vs. median, 4 segments [IQR: 1, 6 segments]) (P &lt; 0.01), the method being particularly sensitive in segments with LGE involving the subendocardium or papillary muscles. In eight patients (16%), BL-LGE could ascertain or rule out a diagnosis otherwise inconclusive on BR-LGE. Free-breathing T &lt;sub&gt;1&lt;/sub&gt; -rho-prepared BL-LGE imaging with inline motion compensated reconstruction offers a promising diagnostic technology for the non-invasive assessment of myocardial injuries

    Extracellular DNA release, quorum sensing, and PrrF1/F2 small RNAs are key players in Pseudomonas aeruginosa tobramycin-enhanced biofilm formation

    Biofilms are structured microbial communities that are the leading cause of numerous chronic infections which are difficult to eradicate. Within the lungs of individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF), Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes persistent biofilm infection that is commonly treated with aminoglycoside antibiotics such as tobramycin. However, sublethal concentrations of this aminoglycoside were previously shown to increase biofilm formation by P. aeruginosa, but the underlying adaptive mechanisms still remain elusive. Herein, we combined confocal laser scanning microscope analyses, proteomics profiling, gene expression assays and phenotypic studies to unravel P. aeruginosa potential adaptive mechanisms in response to tobramycin exposure during biofilm growth. Under this condition, we show that the modified biofilm architecture is related at least in part to increased extracellular DNA (eDNA) release, most likely as a result of biofilm cell death. Furthermore, the activity of quorum sensing (QS) systems was increased, leading to higher production of QS signaling molecules. We also demonstrate upon tobramycin exposure an increase in expression of the PrrF small regulatory RNAs, as well as expression of iron uptake systems. Remarkably, biofilm biovolumes and eDNA relative abundances in pqs and prrF mutant strains decrease in the presence of tobramycin. Overall, our findings offer experimental evidences for a potential adaptive mechanism linking PrrF sRNAs, QS signaling, biofilm cell death, eDNA release, and tobramycin-enhanced biofilm formation in P. aeruginosa. These specific adaptive mechanisms should be considered to improve treatment strategies against P. aeruginosa biofilm establishment in CF patients’ lungs
