Chapter Le grafie e le visioni in Oltremare di Umberto Di Segni
The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences
Rheological properties of a two phase lipid monolayer at the air/water interface: Effect of the composition of the mixture
Many biologically relevant monolayers show coexistence of discrete domains of a long-range ordered condensed phase dispersed in a continuous, disordered, liquid-expanded phase. In this work, we determined the viscous and elastic components of the compressibility modulus and the shear viscosity of monolayers exhibiting phase coexistence with the aim at elucidating the contribution of each phase to the observed monolayer mechanical properties. To this purpose, mixed monolayers with different proportions of distearoylphosphatidylcholine (DSPC) and dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) were prepared and their rheological properties were analyzed. The relationship between the phase diagram of the mixture at 10 mN m-1 and the rheological properties was studied. We found that the monolayer shear viscosity is highly dependent on the presence of domains and on the domain density. In turn, the monolayer compressibility is only influenced by the presence of domains for high domain densities. For monolayers that look homogeneous on the micrometer scale (DSPC amount lower that 23 mol %), all the analyzed rheological properties remain similar to those observed for pure DMPC monolayers, indicating that in this proportion range the DSPC molecules contribute as DMPC to the surface rheology in spite of having hydrocarbon chains four carbons longer.Fil: Wilke, Natalia. Chemometric study of the excipients’ influence on polymorphic-behavior: Mefenamic acid as case of study
The assessment of polymorphism is a problematical issue for regulatory agencies, because variations among crystalline forms of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) can lead to changes in the efficacy and safety of formulated product. Such conversions are very hard to be detected, thus, the development of techniques for the identification, characterization and quantification of polymorphs results essential in all stages of the manufacturing process. The presence of excipients in formulated products may change the crystal stability of an API, by catalyzing a polymorphic transformation or stabilizing the less stable form. As paradox, all suitable analytical techniques (spectroscopies, thermal analysis, NMR and DRX, and others) for polymorphic analysis are affected by excipients. A deep understanding of the polymorphism-excipient relationship is in full accordance with Quality by Design (QbD) paradigm, the systematic approach focused in quality building into a product based in the full understanding of the products and process. In this work, a novel approach based on thermal stress, MIR monitoring, multivariate curve resolution with alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) and kinetic analysis was developed and applied to monitor polymorphism behavior of model API in formulated products. Commercial tablets, physical mixtures and commercial API, were processed and analyzed under the proposed approach. Commercial tablets of MFA revealed a fast conversion to Form II, contrasting to the behavior of the pure API. Physical mixtures showed similar behavior to commercial tablets, thus reduction in transformation times was related to MFA-excipients physical interaction, even at surface level. Calorimetric studies support the conclusion obtained. The developed approach could be extended to others APIs and other stress sources (humidity, solvents, mechanical forces and its combinations), being a valuable tool for QbD environment.Fil: Antonio, Marina. Zn2+-dependent surface behavior of diacylglycerol pyrophosphate and its mixtures with phosphatidic acid at different pHs
Diacylglycerol pyrophosphate (DGPP) is a minor lipid that attenuates the phosphatidic acid (PA) signal, and also DGPP itself would be a signaling lipid. DGPP is an anionic phospholipid with a pyrophosphate group attached to diacylglycerol that was shown to respond to changes of pH, thus affecting the surface organization of DGPP and their interaction with PA. In this work, we have investigated how the presence of Zn2+, modulates the surface organization of DGPP and its interaction with PA at acid and basic pHs. Both lipids formed expanded monolayers at pH 5 and 8. At pH 5, monolayers formed by DGPP became stiffer when Zn2+was added to the subphase, while the surface potential decreased. At this pH, Zn2+ induced a phase transition from an expanded to a condensed phase state in monolayers formed by PA. Conversely, at pH 8 the effects induced by the presence of Zn2+ on the surface behaviors of the pure lipids were smaller. Thus, the interaction of the bivalent cation with both lipids was modulated by pH and by the ionization state of the polar head-groups. Mixed monolayers of PA and DGPP showed a non-ideal behavior and were not affected by the presence of Zn2+ at pH 8. This could be explained considering that when mixed, the lipids formed a close packed monolayer that could not be further modified by the cation. Our results indicate that DGPP and PA exhibit expanded and condensed phase states depending on pH, on the proportion of each lipid in the film and on the presence of Zn2+. Continuum and atomistic description of excess electrons in TiO2
The modelling of an excess electron in a semiconductor in a prototypical dye sensitised solar cell is carried out using two complementary approaches: atomistic simulation of the TiO2 nanoparticle surface is complemented by a dielectric continuum model of the solvent–semiconductor interface. The two methods are employed to characterise the bound (excitonic) states formed by the interaction of the electron in the semiconductor with a positive charge opposite the interface. Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the excess electron in TiO2 in the presence of a counterion is not fully localised but extends laterally over a large region, larger than system sizes accessible to DFT calculations. The numerical description of the excess electron at the semiconductor–electrolyte interface based on the continuum model shows that the exciton is also delocalised over a large area: the exciton radius can have values from tens to hundreds of Ångströms, depending on the nature of the semiconductor (characterised by the dielectric constant and the electron effective mass in our model)
A single amino-acid substitution in the sodium transporter HKT1 associated with plant salt tolerance
A crucial prerequisite for plant growth and survival is the maintenance of potassium uptake, especially when high sodium surrounds the root zone. The Arabidopsis HIGH-AFFINITY K TRANSPORTER1 (HKT1), and its homologs in other salt-sensitive dicots, contributes to salinity tolerance by removing Na from the transpiration stream. However, TsHKT1;2, one of three HKT1 copies in Thellungiella salsuginea, a halophytic Arabidopsis relative, acts as a Ktransporter in the presence of Na in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). Amino-acid sequence comparisons indicated differences between TsHKT1;2 and most other published HKT1 sequences with respect to an Asp residue (D207) in the second pore-loop domain. Two additional T. salsuginea and most other HKT1 sequences contain Asn (N) in this position. Wild-type TsHKT1;2 and altered AtHKT1 (AtHKT1) complemented K-uptake deficiency of yeast cells. Mutanthkt1-1 plants complemented with both AtHKT1 and TsHKT1;2 showed higher tolerance to salt stress than lines complemented by the wild-type AtHKT1. Electrophysiological analysis in Xenopus laevis oocytes confirmed the functional properties of these transporters and the differential selectivity for Na and Kbased on the N/D variance in the pore region. This change also dictated inward-rectification for Na transport. Thus, the introduction of Asp, replacing Asn, in HKT1-type transporters established altered cation selectivity and uptake dynamics. We describe one way, based on a single change in a crucial protein that enabled some crucifer species to acquire improved salt tolerance, which over evolutionary time may have resulted in further changes that ultimately facilitated colonization of saline habitats.Peer Reviewe
Evaluation of Ventral Laparoscopic Abomasopexy Using Surgical Staples Associated with Suture Material in Dairy Cattle
Background: Displaced Abomasum is known for being on of the main illnesses that affect milking cows. Increase in diagnosis of this illness is due to advancement in diagnosis techniques. Increase in incidence of this illness can be explained by genetic selection of animals with high production, breed systems and changes to the diet with a higher level of protein. For laparoscopic treatment, several surgical changes were performed to optimize the procedure and thus achieve better results. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate applicability of the ventral laparoscopic abomasopexy technique, using surgical clamps attached to the suture thread, to milking cows.Materials, Methods & Results: Six adult cows were placed under anesthesia with isoflurane and placed in dorsal decubitus. Animals were kept with no water for 24 h and no food for 48 h. Four laparoscopic accesses were performed. The first one was created with the intention of inspecting the abdominal cavity and the remaining three for access of surgical instruments. Serous membrane of the abomasum was cauterized, combined with suture threads and placed at the greater abomasal curvature. The free part of suture threads was kept out of the abdominal cavity and after traction of the abomasum against the abdominal wall was tied to the skin. Ultrasound exam was performed for abdominal evaluation after abomasopexy. Anesthesia time and surgery time were recorded and analyzes through average and standard deviation (SD). The average anesthesia time recorded was 94 min (SD 14.63 min) and average surgery time was 51 min (SD 14.71 min). The fasting period was considered adequate, however all animals had to undergo intubation with orogastric tube to drain liquids and gas during the procedure. Four of the six animals had lineal adhesion. Three of the four animals that had adhesion did not keep the abomasum at the retroperitoneal area, however viscera movement was stopped in the abdominal cavity.Discussion: Abomasopexy through laparoscopy is a safe technique, especially when compared with other invasive methods of abomasopexy. However, to perform this type of surgery availability of adequate equipment and a well trained surgical team are required. This study was performed at a surgery room under full anesthesia. In a field situation, the veterinarian can have some difficulties but such adversities must not be considered and impediment for performance of surgery on the field as its performance is possible. Even though surgical clamps were small, they were considered adequate for what was suggested. The applied 0 degree laparoscopic optic presented restrictions for cavity inspection, therefore we believe that an optical lenses with 30 degree angle could facilitate this laparoscopy inspection. To induce greater and more lasting adherence we suggest cauterizing a greater area of the serous membrane of the abomasum. We also suggest not performing this procedure during lactation peak, when fasting and surgery can cause economic losses. Complications associated with this technique could not be avoided. The technique has shown favorable results, but its clinical applicability depends on application on animals subjected to the conditions of a milk production cycle

Rendimiento de cultivares de Arveja (Pisum sativum, L) en diferentes ambientes de la República Argentina. Campaña 2017-2018
Las exportaciones de arveja argentina se redujeron en 2017 respecto del año 2016, con una caída de 14 %. A pesar de ello la demanda internacional crece todos los años pero Argentina no logra incrementar la participación, entre otros factores debido a la poco atractiva ecuación económica del cultivo como para que los productores incrementen la oferta. Los precios de arveja verde se modificaron a la suba, a partir de la mayor demanda por la reactivación del principal comprador de la producción nacional, Brasil, pero está lejos de ser un precio tentador.EEA PergaminoFil: Prieto, Gabriel María. Rendimiento de cultivares de arveja (Pisum sativum, L) en diferentes ambientes de la República Argentina - Campaña 2018-2019
Se estima que la población mundial para 2050 llegará a las 9.000 millones de personas, por lo que la demanda de alimentos será creciente y las legumbres juegan un papel fundamental en la dieta de los países que más población tienen, como India y China. Dentro de las legumbres, arveja es la especie de menor precio en relación a lenteja, garbanzo o porotos. En este sentido, cuando se hace necesario importar alimentos, las arvejas son las preferidas.
El área de siembra de arveja en Argentina no se ha incrementado, en gran parte por el bajo precio en 2018 en relación a otros cultivos de invierno y, por otro lado, por el escaso o nulo consumo interno (Vita y Prieto, 2018). Sin embargo, dado los precios actuales de arveja verde (alrededor de 250 U$S/tn), hacen mucho más interesante la posibilidad de incluirla en los sistemas de producción.
Sumado al beneficio del margen de los planteos agrícolas, una vía de uso diferente a la exportación o al consumo humano directo, es su inclusión en las dietas forrajeras destinadas a alimentar bovinos de carne o de leche, como así también porcinos o aves. Abundan en la bibliografía internacional los trabajos donde se demuestra que el uso de arveja en reemplazo parcial de otras harinas proteicas, como la de soja y fuentes energéticas como el maíz, conducen a ganancias de peso similares o superiores a los testigos (Lardy et al, 2009; Fendrick et al, 2005; Soto Navarro et al, 2012; Pasinato et al, 2019; Landblom & Poland, 1997; Reed et al, 2004; Birkelo et al, 2000).
