    Optical studies of ferroelectric and ferroelastic domain walls

    Recent studies carried out with atomic force microscopy or high-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveal that ferroic domain walls can exhibit different physical properties than the bulk of the domains, such as enhanced conductivity in insulators, or polar properties in non-polar materials. In this review we show that optical techniques, in spite of the diffraction limit, also provide key insights into the structure and physical properties of ferroelectric and ferroelastic domain walls. We give an overview of the uses, specificities and limits of these techniques, and emphasize the properties of the domain walls that they can probe. We then highlight some open questions of the physics of domain walls that could benefit from their use

    High-contrast imaging of 180{\deg} ferroelectric domains by optical microscopy using ferroelectric liquid crystals

    Ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) couple the direction of their spontaneous electric polarization to the direction of tilt of their optic axis. Consequently, reversal of the electric polarization by an electric field gives rise to an immediate and lasting optical response when an appropriately aligned FLC is observed between crossed polarizers, with one field direction yielding a dark image, and the opposite direction yielding a bright image. Here this peculiar electro-optic response is used to image, with high optical contrast, 180{\deg} ferroelectric domains in a crystalline substrate of magnesium-doped lithium niobate. The lithium niobate substrate contains a few domains with upwards electric polarization surrounded by regions with downward electric polarization. In contrast to a reference non-chiral liquid crystal that is unable to show ferroelectric behavior due to its high symmetry, the FLC, which is used as a thin film confined between the lithium niobate substrate and an inert aligning substrate, reveals ferroelectric domains as well as their boundaries, with strong black and white contrast. The results show that FLCs can be used for non-destructive read-out of domains in underlying ferroelectrics, with potential applications in e.g. photonic devices and non-volatile ferroelectric memories.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

    The research aims to figure out the characteristic of Oyster Mushroom in Pekanbaru, the level of belief, consumers' importance and consumers' attitude on marketing mix of Oyster Mushroom in Pekanbaru. The research was carried out on Limbungan street BPD Complex in Rumbai Pekanbaru. This research used primary data that was gained from interview and secondary data that was gained from Board of Statistic Center and other references, and then those data were analayzed by using validity and reliability test, importance and belief level, cartesian diagram, Multiattribute Fishbein. The result showed that the biggest number of consumers' chracteristicswere in productive age41-50 years old, female, mostly in S1 and High School as the educational level, and jobs were housewife and private employee, with 2-3 children, with income range between Rp. 3,000,000-Rp.5,000,000/month, and have been subscribing for 4-6 months. The attributes of Oyster Mushroom producer with above the average level of belief were the affordable price, discount, reachable location, packaging, texture, benefit, nutrients, and expiry. The attributes with below the average level of belief were the price that was cheaper than other types of mushroom, parking area, the street condition, hygiene and the place comfortability, promotion in newspaper and billboard. The attributes of Oyster Mushroom producer with above the average level of importance were affordable price, discount, reachable location, good street condition, hygiene, and the place comfortability, product availibility, texture, benefit, nutrients, and expiry. The consumers' attitude toward the Oyster Mushroom producer according to the scale score was 436.2273it was located in “a bit agree scale of measurement” (5), therefore the consumers' attitude in the research was chategorized as “a bit agree” in scale of measurement

    Academic self-concept, gender and single-sex schooling

    This paper assesses gender differences in academic self-concept for a cohort of children born in 1958 (the National Child Development Study). We address the question of whether attending single-sex or co-educational schools affected students’ perceptions of their own academic abilities (academic self-concept). Academic selfconcept was found to be highly gendered, even controlling for prior test scores. Boys had higher self-concepts in maths and science, and girls in English. Single-sex schooling reduced the gender gap in self-concept, while selective schooling was linked to lower academic self-concept overall

    Enhancement of the electronic contribution to the low temperature specific heat of Fe/Cr magnetic multilayer

    We measured the low temperature specific heat of a sputtered (Fe23A˚/Cr12A˚)33(Fe_{23\AA}/Cr_{12\AA})_{33} magnetic multilayer, as well as separate 1000A˚1000\AA thick Fe and Cr films. Magnetoresistance and magnetization measurements on the multilayer demonstrated antiparallel coupling between the Fe layers. Using microcalorimeters made in our group, we measured the specific heat for 4<T<30K4<T<30 K and in magnetic fields up to 8T8 T for the multilayer. The low temperature electronic specific heat coefficient of the multilayer in the temperature range 4<T<14K4<T<14 K is γML=8.4mJ/K2g−at\gamma_{ML}=8.4 mJ/K^{2}g-at. This is significantly larger than that measured for the Fe or Cr films (5.4 and 3.5mJ/K2mol3.5 mJ/K^{2}mol respectively). No magnetic field dependence of γML\gamma_{ML} was observed up to 8T8 T. These results can be explained by a softening of the phonon modes observed in the same data and the presence of an Fe-Cr alloy phase at the interfaces.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure

    Framework, principles and recommendations for utilising participatory methodologies in the co-creation and evaluation of public health interventions

    Background: Due to the chronic disease burden on society, there is a need for preventive public health interventions to stimulate society towards a healthier lifestyle. To deal with the complex variability between individual lifestyles and settings, collaborating with end-users to develop interventions tailored to their unique circumstances has been suggested as a potential way to improve effectiveness and adherence. Co-creation of public health interventions using participatory methodologies has shown promise but lacks a framework to make this process systematic. The aim of this paper was to identify and set key principles and recommendations for systematically applying participatory methodologies to co-create and evaluate public health interventions. Methods: These principles and recommendations were derived using an iterative reflection process, combining key learning from published literature in addition to critical reflection on three case studies conducted by research groups in three European institutions, all of whom have expertise in co-creating public health interventions using different participatory methodologies. Results: Key principles and recommendations for using participatory methodologies in public health intervention co-creation are presented for the stages of: Planning (framing the aim of the study and identifying the appropriate sampling strategy); Conducting (defining the procedure, in addition to manifesting ownership); Evaluating (the process and the effectiveness) and Reporting (providing guidelines to report the findings). Three scaling models are proposed to demonstrate how to scale locally developed interventions to a population level. Conclusions: These recommendations aim to facilitate public health intervention co-creation and evaluation utilising participatory methodologies by ensuring the process is systematic and reproducible

    Ultrafast acousto-optic mode conversion in optically birefringent ferroelectrics

    The ability to generate efficient giga-terahertz coherent acoustic phonons with femtosecond laser makes acousto-optics a promising candidate for ultrafast light processing, which faces electronic device limits intrinsic to complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology. Modern acousto-optic devices, including optical mode conversion process between ordinary and extraordinary light waves (and vice versa), remain limited to the megahertz range. Here, using coherent acoustic waves generated at tens of gigahertz frequency by a femtosecond laser pulse we reveal the mode conversion process and show its efficiency in ferroelectric materials such as BiFeO3 and LiNbO3. Further to the experimental evidence, we provide a complete theoretical support to this all-optical ultrafast mechanism mediated by acousto-optic interaction. By allowing the manipulation of light polarization with gigahertz coherent acoustic phonons, our results provide a novel route for the development of next-generation photonic-based devices and highlight new capabilities in using ferroelectrics in modern photonics

    Psychological attachment to the group: Cross-cultural differences in organizational identification and subjective norms as predictors of workers' turnover intentions

    Two studies wed the theory of reasoned action, social identity theory, and Ashforth and Mael's work on organizational identification to predict turnover intentions in Japanese and British commercial and academic organizations. In both studies and in both countries, the authors expected and found that identification with the organization substantially and significantly predicted turnover intentions. Attitudes predicted intentions only in Study 2, and subjective norms significantly predicted intentions across both studies. The authors hypothesized that subjective norms would be a significantly stronger predictor of turnover intentions in a collectivist setting. This prediction was supported. Although social identity is strongly associated with turnover intentions across both cultures, the subjective normative aspects of group membership are significantly more strongly associated in the Japanese organizations
