Self-similar expansion of the density profile in a turbulent Bose-Einstein condensate
In a recent study we demonstrated the emergence of turbulence in a trapped
Bose-Einstein condensate of Rb-87 atoms. An intriguing observation in such a
system is the behavior of the turbulent cloud during free expansion.The aspect
ratio of the cloud size does not change in the way one would expect for an
ordinary non-rotating (vortex-free) condensate. Here we show that the anomalous
expansion can be understood, at least qualitatively, in terms of the presence
of vorticity distributed throughout the cloud, effectively counteracting the
usual reversal of the aspect ratio seen in free time-of-flight expansion of

Neutrophil Extracellular Traps in COVID-19
In severe cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), viral pneumonia progresses to respiratory failure. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are extracellular webs of chromatin, microbicidal proteins, and oxidant enzymes that are released by neutrophils to contain infections. However, when not properly regulated, NETs have potential to propagate inflammation and microvascular thrombosis - including in the lungs of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome. While elevated levels of blood neutrophils predict worse outcomes in COVID-19, the role of NETs has not been investigated. We now report that sera from patients with COVID-19 (n = 50 patients, n = 84 samples) have elevated levels of cell-free DNA, myeloperoxidase(MPO)-DNA, and citrullinated histone H3 (Cit-H3); the latter two are highly specific markers of NETs. Highlighting the potential clinical relevance of these findings, cell-free DNA strongly correlated with acute phase reactants including C-reactive protein, D-dimer, and lactate dehydrogenase, as well as absolute neutrophil count. MPO-DNA associated with both cell-free DNA and absolute neutrophil count, while Cit-H3 correlated with platelet levels. Importantly, both cell-free DNA and MPO-DNA were higher in hospitalized patients receiving mechanical ventilation as compared with hospitalized patients breathing room air. Finally, sera from individuals with COVID-19 triggered NET release from control neutrophils in vitro. In summary, these data reveal high levels of NETs in many patients with COVID-19, where they may contribute to cytokine release and respiratory failure. Future studies should investigate the predictive power of circulating NETs in longitudinal cohorts, and determine the extent to which NETs may be novel therapeutic targets in severe COVID-19
From Coherent Modes to Turbulence and Granulation of Trapped Gases
The process of exciting the gas of trapped bosons from an equilibrium initial
state to strongly nonequilibrium states is described as a procedure of symmetry
restoration caused by external perturbations. Initially, the trapped gas is
cooled down to such low temperatures, when practically all atoms are in
Bose-Einstein condensed state, which implies the broken global gauge symmetry.
Excitations are realized either by imposing external alternating fields,
modulating the trapping potential and shaking the cloud of trapped atoms, or it
can be done by varying atomic interactions by means of Feshbach resonance
techniques. Gradually increasing the amount of energy pumped into the system,
which is realized either by strengthening the modulation amplitude or by
increasing the excitation time, produces a series of nonequilibrium states,
with the growing fraction of atoms for which the gauge symmetry is restored. In
this way, the initial equilibrium system, with the broken gauge symmetry and
all atoms condensed, can be excited to the state, where all atoms are in the
normal state, with completely restored gauge symmetry. In this process, the
system, starting from the regular superfluid state, passes through the states
of vortex superfluid, turbulent superfluid, heterophase granular fluid, to the
state of normal chaotic fluid in turbulent regime. Both theoretical and

The International Pulsar Timing Array: First data release
International audienceThe highly stable spin of neutron stars can be exploited for a variety of (astro)physical investigations. In particular, arrays of pulsars with rotational periods of the order of milliseconds can be used to detect correlated signals such as those caused by gravitational waves. Three such 'pulsar timing arrays' (PTAs) have been set up around the world over the past decades and collectively form the 'International' PTA (IPTA). In this paper, we describe the first joint analysis of the data from the three regional PTAs, i.e. of the first IPTA data set. We describe the available PTA data, the approach presently followed for its combination and suggest improvements for future PTA research. Particular attention is paid to subtle details (such as underestimation of measurement uncertainty and long-period noise) that have often been ignored but which become important in this unprecedentedly large and inhomogeneous data set. We identify and describe in detail several factors that complicate IPTA research and provide recommendations for future pulsar timing efforts. The first IPTA data release presented here (and available on-line) is used to demonstrate the IPTA's potential of improving upon gravitational-wave limit
The bacterial storage compound poly-β-hydroxybutyrate protects Artemia franciscana from pathogenic Vibrio campbellii
Infections caused by antibiotic-resistant luminescent Vibrios can cause dramatic losses in aquaculture. In this study, the short-chain fatty acid β-hydroxybutyrate and its polymer poly-β-hydroxybutyrate were investigated as possible new biocontrol agents. β-Hydroxybutyrate was shown to completely inhibit the growth of pathogenic Vibrio campbelli at 100 mM. Moreover, the addition of 100 mM of this fatty acid to the culture water of Artemia nauplii infected with the V. campbelli strain significantly increased the survival of the nauplii. As Artemia is a non-selective and particle filter feeder, we also investigated whether poly-β-hydroxybutyrate particles could be used to protect Artemia from the pathogenic V. campbellii. The addition of 100 mg l−1 poly-β-hydroxybutyrate or more to the Artemia culture water offered a preventive and curative protection from the pathogen as a significantly enhanced survival was noticed. If added as a preventive treatment, a complete protection of infected nauplii (no significant mortality compared with uninfected nauplii) was observed at 1000 mg l−1 poly-β-hydroxybutyrate. Our data indicate that the use of poly-β-hydroxybutyrate might constitute an ecologically and economically sustainable alternative strategy to fight infections in aquaculture
Shear Alfven mode resonances in nonaxisymmetric toroidal low-pressure plasmas. Pt. 1 Mode equations in arbitrary geometry
Field line coordinates are used to obtain a concise set of three coupled partial differential equations for the modes in ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) plasmas of arbitrary geometry. Zero plasma pressure is assumed throughout. The shear Alfven continuum and the pressureless remnant of the ballooning continuum are readily obtained. The equations are suitable, in particular, for the study of the spatial dependence of continuum modes close to singular magnetic surfaces or field lines. On the existence of orthogonal, magnetic field line oriented coordinate systems
The existence of orthogonal, field aligned coordinate systems, i.e. coordinate systems with one coordinate direction always parallel to the local magnetic field, is critically reviewed. Such coordinates are widely used e.g. in wave propagation studies of magnetospheric plasmas and would as well be useful in theoretical studies of fusion plasma configurations, particularly of configurations without spatial symmetry. With the help of simple model magnetic configurations it is demonstrated that the presence of local magnetic shear precludes in general the existence of such coordinates.
