    Genetic algorithms: a pragmatic, non-parametric approach to exploratory analysis of questionnaires in educational research

    Data from a survey to determine student attitudes to their courses are used as an example to show how genetic algorithms can be used in the analysis of questionnaire data. Genetic algorithms provide a means of generating logical rules which predict one variable in a data set by relating it to others. This paper explains the principle underlying genetic algorithms and gives a non-mathematical description of the means by which rules are generated. A commercially available computer program is used to apply genetic algorithms to the survey data. The results are discussed

    Mid-infrared observations of the ultraluminous galaxies IRAS14348-1447, IRAS19254-7245, and IRAS23128-5919

    We present a study of the three ultraluminous infrared galaxies IRAS14348-1447, IRAS19254-7245, and IRAS23128-5919, based on mid-infrared (MIR) spectro-imaging (5-18microns) observations performed with ISOCAM. We find that the MIR emission from each system, which consists of a pair of interacting late type galaxies, is principally confined to the nuclear regions with diameters of 1-2kpc and can account for more than 95% of their IRAS 12micron flux. In each interacting system, the galaxy hosting an active galactic nucleus (AGN) dominates the total spectrum and shows stronger dust continuum (12-16microns) relative to the Unidentified Infrared Band (UIB) emission (6-9microns), suggestive of its enhanced radiation field. The MIR dominant galaxy also exhibits elevated 15micron/Halpha and 15micron/K ratios which trace the high extinction due to the large quantities of molecular gas and dust present in its central regions. Using only diagnostics based on our mid-infrared spectra, we can establish that the Seyfert galaxy IRAS19254-7245 exhibits MIR spectral features of an AGN while the MIR spectrum of the Seyfert (or LINER) member of IRAS23128-5919 is characteristic of dust emission principally heated by star forming regions.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 13 pages, 9 figure

    The bolometric and UV attenuation in normal spiral galaxies of the Herschel Reference Survey

    The dust in nearby galaxies absorbs a fraction of the UV-optical-near-infrared radiation produced by stars. This energy is consequently re-emitted in the infrared. We investigate the portion of the stellar radiation absorbed by spiral galaxies from the HRS by modelling their UV-to-submillimetre spectral energy distributions. Our models provide an attenuated and intrinsic SED from which we find that on average 32 % of all starlight is absorbed by dust. We define the UV heating fraction as the percentage of dust luminosity that comes from absorbed UV photons and find that this is 56 %, on average. This percentage varies with morphological type, with later types having significantly higher UV heating fractions. We find a strong correlation between the UV heating fraction and specific star formation rate and provide a power-law fit. Our models allow us to revisit the IRX-AFUV relations, and derive these quantities directly within a self-consistent framework. We calibrate this relation for different bins of NUV-r colour and provide simple relations to relate these parameters. We investigated the robustness of our method and we conclude that the derived parameters are reliable within the uncertainties which are inherent to the adopted SED model. This calls for a deeper investigation on how well extinction and attenuation can be determined through panchromatic SED modelling.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures.     Herschel and JCMT observations of the early-type dwarf galaxy NGC 205

    We present Herschel dust continuum, James Clerk Maxwell Telescope CO(3-2) observations and a search for [CII] 158 micron and [OI] 63 micron spectral line emission for the brightest early-type dwarf satellite of Andromeda, NGC 205. While direct gas measurements (Mgas ~ 1.5e+6 Msun, HI + CO(1-0)) have proven to be inconsistent with theoretical predictions of the current gas reservoir in NGC 205 (> 1e+7 Msun), we revise the missing interstellar medium mass problem based on new gas mass estimates (CO(3-2), [CII], [OI]) and indirect measurements of the interstellar medium content through dust continuum emission. Based on Herschel observations, covering a wide wavelength range from 70 to 500 micron, we are able to probe the entire dust content in NGC 205 (Mdust ~ 1.1-1.8e+4 Msun at Tdust ~ 18-22 K) and rule out the presence of a massive cold dust component (Mdust ~ 5e+5 Msun, Tdust ~ 12 K), which was suggested based on millimeter observations from the inner 18.4 arcsec. Assuming a reasonable gas-to-dust ratio of ~ 400, the dust mass in NGC 205 translates into a gas mass Mgas ~ 4-7e+6 Msun. The non-detection of [OI] and the low L_[CII]-to-L_CO(1-0) line intensity ratio (~ 1850) imply that the molecular gas phase is well traced by CO molecules in NGC 205. We estimate an atomic gas mass of 1.5e+4 Msun associated with the [CII] emitting PDR regions in NGC 205. From the partial CO(3-2) map of the northern region in NGC 205, we derive a molecular gas mass of M_H2 ~ 1.3e+5 Msun. [abridged]Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Milk production functions in relation to feed inputs, cow characteristics and environmental conditions

    The main emphasis of this study is on milk production functions as they relate to various levels and proportions of grain and hay in a ration restricted to these two feeds. However, certain auxiliary variables representing cow characteristics and environmental conditions are also incorporated into the production function. The auxiliary variables include: stage of lactation, milk-producing ability, temperature, age, maturity, body weight and a coefficient of inbreeding. These auxiliary variables are fixed at different levels to allow expression of milk production functions when the characteristics of cows are set at different magnitudes. This study considers the economic optima in ration specification for dairy cows and represents a cooperative interdisciplinary effort. The estimates allow derivation of production surfaces, milk isoclines and isoquants, marginal rates of feed substitution and profit-maximizing rations for cows of different characteristics (maturity, ability, inbreeding, weight) producing under specified environmental conditions
