    Economics of education research: a review and future prospects

    In this paper we offer an appraisal of the economics of education research area, charting its history as a field and discussing the ways in which economists have contributed both to education research and to education policy-making. In particular, we highlight the theoretical and methodological contributions that economists have made to the field of education during the last 50 years. Despite the success of the economics of education as a field of inquiry, we argue that some of the contributions made by economists could be limited if the economics of education is seen as quite distinct from the other disciplines working in the field of education. In these areas of common interest, economists need to work side by side with the other major disciplines in the field of education if their contribution to the field is to be maximised, particularly in terms of applying improved methodology. We conclude that the study of education acquisition and its economic and social impact in the economics of education research area is very likely to remain a fertile research ground. Acknowledgement

    Overeducation across British regions

    This paper analyses levels of over-education and wage returns to education for males across eleven regions of the UK using Labour Force Survey data. Significant differences are found in the probability of being over-educated across regions; also, differences are found in the return to the ‘correct’ level of education in each region, in each case associated with flexibility of movement between and into particular regions, which determines the ease of job matching. Furthermore, evidence is found that, after controlling for the level of education acquired, there exists a premium to the ‘correct’ level of education, which varies across UK regions

    Progression of Performance Over Four Decades in Masters’ Athletics

    Athletic performance at the highest level of competition has improved in a variety of sports over the last 40 years, most notably in swimming and track. Although improvements in performance have also been observed among masters’ athletes (ages 35 and older), data concerning masters’ athletic performance have only been certain since the 1970’s. Whether the magnitude of improvement in athletic performance from 1970 onward is different between elite and masters’ athletes, as well as between different age groups of masters’ athletes, has yet to be determined. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in progression of athletic performance between different age groups of masters’ athletes and elite athletes. METHODS: Track (100m and 400m running) and swimming (100m freestyle) times were collected from the World Masters Track and Field and the USA Swimming database. The time span ranged from 1975 to 2013. Age groups were separated into eight 5-year segments spanning from age 40 to 79 years. The top three times of each age group for each year were selected. Moreover, the top 3 track and field and swimming times of any age were collected for the same years to represent a reference standard from which to compare age-group records. A multiple linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the effect of the age × year × sex interaction with SPSS software. When a significant interaction was present, a comparison of slope between age groups and sexes was performed. RESULTS: There were significant age × year × sex interactions in all athletic events examined. Improvements in race times were significant (p\u3c0.05) in both sexes and for age groups 45 and older. Relative improvements in the 45+ age groups were significantly different from the fastest running times. The general trends were similar for 400m middle-distance running. The progressions of 100m swimming times were significant (p\u3c0.05) for all age groups and for both sexes. Analysis of differences in the slope showed that older athletes and women had a greater slope of improvement in performance during that time. CONCLUSION: We demonstrated that there have been significant improvements in athletic performance in masters’ athletes aged 45 and older in the track and field events, and those aged 40 and older in the swimming events in the past thirty nine years

    Cyclodextrins (CD) are cyclic oligosaccharides which have been widely employed for pharmaceutical applications. CD based hydrogels have been synthesized by the crosslinking reaction with epichlorohydrin using αCD, ßCD, γCD, and 50:50 mixtures of α/ßCD and ß/γCD, at different synthesis temperatures. These gels have been characterized by measuring their swelling capacity, mechanical behavior, thermal properties and pore size distribution. The hydrogels synthesized at higher temperatures present a higher swelling capacity, due to the self-polymerization of epichlorohydrin, yielding a more expanded reticular structure with pores of higher diameter. Mechanical assays show that a lower synthesis temperature leads to stronger and harder polymers, according with a lower swelling capacity. Polymers containing different CD types and synthesized at the same temperature present similar reticular structures. In order to investigate the sorption capacity of these hydrogels toward different solutes, five model molecules have been selected: phenol, 3-nitrophenol, 4-nitrophenol, 1-naphthol, and the antiinflamatory drug diflunisal. The amounts sorbed have been related to the different affinities of CDs to the solutes. Drug delivery of two antiinflammatory (naproxen and nabumetone) and two antifungal drugs (naftifine and terbinafine) from ßCD polymer discs has been investigated. Drug release kinetics were carried out at physiological conditions of pH and temperature, and kinetic and diffusion constants were calculated. The drug release followed a simple Fickian diffusion mechanism for all the model drugs. Also, diffusion coefficients were calculated according to the simplified Higuchi model. Naproxen was also used to perform release assays from polymers containing different CDs. The βCD polymer showed the highest amount of drug loaded and the lowest one corresponds to the polymer containing αCD, in agreement with the affinities for naproxen of the corresponding cyclodextrins. It can be inferred that a simple Fickian diffusion mechanism occurs, except for the mixed polymers at pH 1.2 (anomalous transport) and in the case αCDP at pH 7.0 (burst phenomenon). Furthermore, the diffusion and relaxation contributions have been determined for the mixed polymers in order to achieve progress in the design of new polymer matrices according to the structure of the selected drugs

    Synchronization of active mechanical oscillators by an inertial load

    Motivated by the operation of myogenic (self-oscillatory) insect flight muscle, we study a model consisting of a large number of identical oscillatory contractile elements joined in a chain, whose end is attached to a damped mass-spring oscillator. When the inertial load is small, the serial coupling favors an antisynchronous state in which the extension of one oscillator is compensated by the contraction of another, in order to preserve the total length. However, a sufficiently massive load can sychronize the oscillators and can even induce oscillation in situations where isolated elements would be stable. The system has a complex phase diagram displaying quiescent, synchronous and antisynchrononous phases, as well as an unsual asynchronous phase in which the total length of the chain oscillates at a different frequency from the individual active elements.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, To appear in Phys.     The external benefits of higher education

    The private market benefits of education are widely studied at the micro level, although the magnitude of their macroeconomic impact is disputed. However, there are additional benefits of education, which are less well understood. In this paper the macroeconomic effects of external benefits of higher education are estimated using the “micro-to-macro” simulation approach. Two types of externalities are explored: technology spillovers and productivity spillovers in the labour market. These links are illustrated and the results suggest they could be very large. However, this is qualified by the dearth of microeconomic evidence, for which we hope to encourage further work

    Tentative detection of phosphine in IRC+10216

    The J,K = 1,0-0,0 rotational transition of phosphine (PH3) at 267 GHz has been tentatively identified with a T_MB = 40 mK spectral line observed with the IRAM 30-m telescope in the C-star envelope IRC+10216. A radiative transfer model has been used to fit the observed line profile. The derived PH3 abundance relative to H2 is 6 x 10^(-9), although it may have a large uncertainty due to the lack of knowledge about the spatial distribution of this species. If our identification is correct, it implies that PH3 has a similar abundance to that reported for HCP in this source, and that these two molecules (HCP and PH3) together take up about 5 % of phosphorus in IRC+10216. The abundance of PH3, as that of other hydrides in this source, is not well explained by conventional gas phase LTE and non-LTE chemical models, and may imply formation on grain surfaces.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; accepted for publication in A&A Letter
