Royal jelly (RJ) is a bee product that has high nutritional value and is beneficial for the human health, earning importance as a functional food. Thus, the characterization of its main biological properties is with high importance. In this work, 6 RJ samples obtained in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain were evaluated in terms of total phenol and flavone/flavonol contents; total protein; 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA); volatiles composition; antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties; and inhibition of tyrosinase, xanthine oxidase (XO), and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities. Total phenolic content ranged from 3 to 9 mg gallic acid equivalent/g RJ, and flavone/flavonol content from 0.1 to 0.5 mg quercetin equivalent/g RJ. 10-Hydroxy-2-decenoic acid content varied from 0.9% to 1.2% and total protein from 5.5% to 29.7%. Gas chromatography-flame ionization detector and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed RJ volatiles dominated by linolenic acid, 2-decenoic acid, and octanoic acid in variable amounts. The antioxidant activity was monitored through nitric oxide (NO) scavenging activity and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging capacity, where the IC50 ranged from 2.3 to 3.4 and 0.2 to 1.5 mg/mL, respectively. Anti-AChE activity IC50 ranged from 0.7 to 4.6 mg/mL, while XO inhibition IC50 ranged from 3.3 to 11.9 mg/mL. The results showed that phenols and flavonoids highly contributed to the RJ biological properties in contrast to 10-HDA and proteins.UID/AMB/50017/2019 UIDB/05183/2020info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This paper presents the Euler-Lagrange equations for fractional variational problems with multiple integrals. The fractional Noether-type theorem for conservative and nonconservative generalized physical systems is proved. Our approach uses well-known notion of the Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative.Comment: Submitted 26-SEP-2011; accepted 3-MAR-2012; for publication in Applied Mathematics Letter

The Activation-Relaxation Technique : ART nouveau and kinetic ART

    Get PDF
The evolution of many systems is dominated by rare activated events that occur on timescale ranging from nanoseconds to the hour or more. For such systems, simulations must leave aside the full thermal description to focus specifically on mechanisms that generate a configurational change. We present here the activation relaxation technique (ART), an open-ended saddle point search algorithm, and a series of recent improvements to ART nouveau and kinetic ART, an ART-based on-the-fly off-lattice self-learning kinetic Monte Carlo method

Unassisted and carbon dioxide-assisted hydro- and Steam-distillation: modelling kinetics, energy consumption And chemical and biological activities of volatile oils

The demand for more suitable eco-friendly extraction processes has grown over the last few decades and driven research to develop efficient extraction processes with low energy consumption and low costs, but always assuring the quality of the volatile oils (VOs). The present study estimated the kinetic extraction and energy consumption of simultaneous hydro- and steam-distillation (SHSD), and SHSD assisted by carbon dioxide (SHSDACD), using an adopted modelling approach. The two isolation methods influenced the VOs yield, chemical composition and biological activities, namely, antioxidant, anti-glucosidase, anti-acetylcholinesterase and anti-inflammatory properties. SHSDACD provided higher VOs yields than the SHSD at a shorter extraction time: 2.8% at 30 min vs. 2.0% at 120 min, respectively, for Rosmarinus officinalis, 1.5% at 28 min vs. 1.2% at 100 min, respectively, for Lavandula angustifolia, and 1.7% at 20 min vs. 1.6% at 60 min, respectively, for Origanum compactum. The first order and sigmoid model fitted to SHSD and SHSDACD, respectively, with R2 value at 96% and with mean square error (MSE) < 5%, where the k distillation rate constant of SHSDACD was fivefold higher and the energy consumption 10 times lower than the SHSD. The rosemary SHSD and SHSDACD VOs chemical composition were similar and dominated by 1,8-cineole (50% and 48%, respectively), and camphor (15% and 12%, respectively). However, the lavender and oregano SHSDACD VOs were richer in linalyl acetate and carvacrol, respectively, than the SHSD VOs. The SHSDACD VOs generally showed better capacity for scavenging the nitric oxide and superoxide anions free radicals as well as for inhibiting α-glucosidase, acetylcholinesterase, and lipoxygenase.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

TCC (graduação) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Campus Joinville. This research aims to present an application analyzation of industrial management tools in Civil Construction. We developed a literature that exposed administrative approaches, trying to define management and its tasks. Such approaches have contributed to the design of Industrial Management which seeks to make the processes of organizations, mainly manufacturing more efficient. The methodologies and their industrial management tools that contribute to effect improvements in institutions are presented. The analysis sought to relate this context with industry characteristics Construction, focusing on the management stage to evaluate the applicability of the tools in various conjectures using comparative tables. The first frame evaluates the use of the Industrial Management tools in methodologies with the objective of verifying the applicability of the same and its associated use. Then the same tools are analyzed when implemented in Construction. The last lists the previous two frames, considering the analysis of Construction, Administrative approaches and tools. In conclusion, it can be seen the applicability of all industrial management tools discussed in Construction, which highlights its industrial character. It is still found that there is a lack of standards and indicators that characterize the progress made improvements with the use of such tools, which together with other factors discourage the implementation of such practices

Re-Evaluating the Classical Falling Body Problem

    Get PDF
This paper re-analyzes the falling body problem in three dimensions, taking into account the effect of the Earth’s rotation (ER). Accordingly, the analytic solution of the three-dimensional model is obtained. Since the ER is quite slow, the three coupled differential equations of motion are usually approximated by neglecting all high order terms. Furthermore, the theoretical aspects describing the nature of the falling point in the rotating frame and the original inertial frame are proved. The theoretical and numerical results are illustrated and discussed. The authors would like to thank the referees for their valuable comments and suggestions, which helped to improve the manuscript. The islands of Porto a housing morpho-typology, linked to its history and part of its industrial and working-class heritage, remains a paradigmatic statement of serious problems of inequality, social exclusion, and difficulties in access to dignified housing. Still symbols of precariousness and lack of infrastructure, the islands, however, have great in- terest in terms of opportunity as a condign housing option at controlled costs, accessible to a majority, and of urban regeneration. Thus, it is from the is- lands that we seek to understand and reflect on pub- lic policies and alternative approaches to the prob- lem of access to decent housing, focusing on the vi- ability and social consequences. Thought to under- stand and reflect on public policies and alternative approaches to the problem of housing and in the re- habilitation of the islands, this research aims to con- tribute to a critical understanding of the problem and to identify obstacles and concrete opportunities. Proximity and governance approaches that are alter- natives to practices and policies currently employed and are objects of this research. From the under- standing of housing as a multisectorial and multidi- mensional problem, from the "island in Campo Ale- gre" as an object-subject, we follow the application process for its rehabilitation by 1.º Direito, a public program of access to housing, through two univer- sity extension projects, with practical goals and so- cial sense, "for" and "with" the people. From the collaboration between the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, and Habitar Porto, an NGO. Based on methodologies of the so- cio-critical paradigm, with distinct levels of partici- pation. First "for the people", the workshop Ar- quitectos de Família, of management practice, fo- cuses on the elaboration of the Base Program of the rehabilitation project. Following, the process "with the people", is based on Participatory-Action-Re- search, which works to develop the co-management model of citizenship practice. In the following mo- ment of the application process, with other objec- tives and actors, this project focused on clarifying the rehabilitation process, refining the project, and mediating between technicians, residents, property owner, and entities, in closer proximity to the terri- tory. Through these two projects, was reinforced an innovative bridge between education and social ac- tion. With concrete results, for the advancement of the application, contributed to overcoming barriers in the implementation of the rehabilitation project, had a positive impact on people lives on the func- tioning of the institutions involved, in the construc- tion of knowledge about access to housing, and on the interest of participatory processes in the democ- ratization of access to housing
