    Is copyright blind to the visual?

    This article argues that, with respect to the copyright protection of works of visual art, the general uneasiness that has always pervaded the relationship between copyright law and concepts of creativity produces three anomalous results. One of these is that copyright lacks much in the way of a central concept of 'visual art' and, to the extent that it embraces any concept of the 'visual', it is rooted in the rhetorical discourse of the Renaissance. This means that copyright is poorly equipped to deal with modern developments in the visual arts. Secondly, the pervasive effect of rhetorical discourse appears to have made it particularly difficult for copyright law to strike a meaningful balance between protecting creativity and permitting its use in further creative works. Thirdly, just when rhetorical discourse might have been useful in identifying the significance and materiality of the unique one-off work of visual art, copyright law chooses to ignore its implications

    Sensitivity and specificity of a competitive enzyme immunoassay in the serodiagnosis of bovine brucellosis

    O trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a sensibilidade e a especificidade de um teste imunoenzimático competitivo, empregando como conjugado os anticorpos monoclonais BM-38 e BM-40, no diagnóstico sorológico da brucelose bovina. Foram examinados 74 soros de bovinos dos quais havia sido isolada Brucella abortus e 2.118 soros de bovinos procedentes de rebanhos livres de brucelose e que apresentaram resultado negativo quando submetidos ao teste Rosa Bengala. O teste imunoenzimático competitivo, usando qualquer dos dois conjugados, foi capaz de revelar a presença de anticorpos contra o lipopolissacáride bacteriano em todos os soros de bovinos infectados, o que resulta em uma sensibilidade de 100%. A especificidade do teste usando o conjugado BM-38 foi de 98.82% e usando o conjugado BM-40 foi de 99,95%. Estes resultados indicam que o teste imunoenzimático competitivo, principalmente ao se empregar o conjugado BM-40, consiste em um método bastante útil para ser usado como teste confirmatório no diagnóstico sorológico da brucelose bovina.The purpose of this work was to evaluate the sensitivity and the specificity of a competitive enzyme immunoassay, using as conjugate the monoclonal antibodies BM-38 and BM-40, in the serodiagnosis of bovine brucellosis. Seventy-four sera from culture-positive cattle and 2,118 cattle sera from herds free from brucellosis and negative to the Rose Bengal plate test were examined. The competitive enzyme immunoassay, using any of the two conjugates, was able to reveal the presence of antibodies to Brucella lipopolysaccharide in all of the 74 sera of the infected cattle, resulting in a sensitivity of 100%. The specificity of the test using the conjugate BM-38 was 98.82% and using the conjugate BM-40 was 99.95%. These results indicated that the competitive enzyme immunoassay, mainly when using the conjugate BM-40, consists in a technique very useful in the confirmation of the serological diagnosis of bovine brucellosis

    The Radial Orbit Instability in Collisionless N-Body Simulations

    Using a suite of self-gravitating, collisionless N-body models, we systematically explore a parameter space relevant to the onset and behavior of the radial orbit instability (ROI), whose strength is measured by the systemic axis ratios of the models. We show that a combination of two initial conditions, namely the velocity anisotropy and the virial ratio, determines whether a system will undergo ROI and exactly how triaxial the system will become. A third initial condition, the radial shape of the density profile, plays a smaller, but noticeable role. Regarding the dynamical development of the ROI, the instability a) begins after systems collapse to their most compact configuration and b) evolves fastest when a majority of the particles have radially anisotropic orbits while there is a lack of centrally-concentrated isotropic orbits. We argue that this is further evidence that self-reinforcing torques are the key to the onset of the ROI.     Effects of Corn Oil and Benzyl Acetate on Number and Size of Azaserine-Induced Foci in the Pancreas of LEW and F344 Rats

    The response of LEW and F344 strain rats to the pancreatic carcinogen azaserine was compared using the size and number of azaserine-induced acidophilic acinar cell foci and nodules as parameters in a 4-month experiment. A second experiment compared the effect of corn oil intake by gavage and dietary routes on the growth of azaserine-induced pancreatic lesions in LEW rats. A third experiment tested the activity of benzyl acetate in regard to its ability to induce acinar cell foci or to promote the growth of such foci in azaserine-treated rats. The results showed that equivalent doses of azaserine induce two to seven times more foci in LEW than in F344 rats, and that LEW rats have a higher incidence of spontaneous foci than F344 rats. Azaserine-treated LEW rats that were given 5 mL corn oil/kg body weight 5 days per week by gavage developed more acinar cell foci than rats fed a basal diet (chow). Addition of an equivalent amount of corn oil to chow had a similar effect of enhancing the development of foci. Rats of neither strain developed acinar cell foci when benzyl acetate was given by gavage or in the diet nor was there evidence that benzyl acetate has a significant effect on the development of foci in azaserine-treated rats. These studies also demonstrate that the azaserine/rat model of pancreatic carcinogenesis which was developed in LEW rats can be adapted for use with F344 rats
