Consumer Preferences of Solar Systems in Boston and Atlanta: A Choice Experiment

    Get PDF
Creating a cleaner energy grid has become a hot topic over the past 20 years, as the effects of fossil fuels on our planet has become clearer. The solar market in the US has exploded over the past 10 years, with an average annual growth rate of about 42% (Solar Industry Research Data, 2020). Choice experiments are often conducted to better understand consumers preferences towards products or characteristics of products. In this study, data of a choice experiment in a survey of residents in Boston and Atlanta regarding preferences for attributes of household solar energy collecting system are analyzed. The results of data analysis give us a better understanding as to what consumers in Boston and Atlanta value in a solar photovoltaic or hot water system, and to estimate what they are willing to pay (WTP) for these systems, and upgrades in attributes/features of these systems

Auditing CPR Skills for Campus Recreation Student Employees

    Get PDF
CPR training is an important part of any collegiate recreation facility’s risk management plan for injury prevention. Because student employees are the first line of defense it is important that they are properly prepared to respond to any emergency situation. Oftentimes classroom training alone is not enough to prepare employees for emergencies. The purpose of this project was to build a training and audit program for CPR in order to build confidence and retain knowledge and skills for student employees in a campus recreation department. A training and audit program was created based on researching programs used by other universities and reviewing the literature about confidence in performing CPR. Participants for the study were employees at a campus recreation center who held the Floor Attendant position. Participants were asked to complete a short quiz at the beginning and end of the test period, which was four months. They also participated in an audit at the beginning and end of the test period. After the second audit the participants were surveyed on their experience with the program and self-reported confidence in performing CPR before and after the program. Overall, the majority of participants improved between the first and second tests. For audits, 80% of participants improved their skills and for the quiz, 70% of participants improved. When surveyed, most students agreed that their confidence in performing CPR in an audit and real life situation was higher after participating in the program. Most also agreed that they were more confident when performing a surprise audit because it was most like a real life situation. These results suggest that overall the training and audit program does increase confidence for student employees in campus recreation and assist in retaining knowledge. However, more research should be done in order to determine the effectiveness of this program for different recreation departments

How should sports organizations handle a crisis?: a focus on collegiate institutions

    Get PDF
The sports industry is big business just like any other big business. Sports organizations face various crises just as corporate America does. A survey of 345 professional and college level sports organizations revealed that 70% of them experienced a crisis in 1997, while the Los Angeles Times reported that 220 college athletes were the focus of criminal charges in 1995. Sports crises are clearly more frequent today than ever before, said Kathleen Hessert. Mike Paul agrees with that trend based on his research, attributing the trend to poor life choices away from the sport. What is a crisis? A crisis is a situation that disrupts normal business operations, and has an uncertain and a potentially negative outcome. What are some crises within the sports industry? Crises can range from criminal charges, labor disputes, arena/stadium issues, politically incorrect statements or actions, accidental deaths and workplace violence. This thesis will examine how nine public relations practitioners in the sports industry handle crises, and compare the findings to the Gonzalez-Herrero and Pratt crisis management model. The nine sports organizations interviewed will gain insight into their practices concerning crises, thus, giving them the opportunity to improve communications with their publics whereby mutually valuable relationships can be formed. The findings of this thesis seem to support certain aspects of the crisis management model, however, none of the organizations follow the model exactly. The inability of all of these organizations to implement more proactive public relations or to conduct formal research causes these organizations to operate in a reactionary mode. The findings of this thesis point out the areas in which these sports organizations indeed do follow the Gonzalez-Herrero and Pratt crisis management model, and points out the areas in which these organizations\u27 performance is lacking. The areas tended to be planning and research. Although these findings cannot be generalized to all sports organizations, those organizations can use these findings as an educational tool in which to enhance their own operations

Speech-language-hearing instruments to assess peripheral facial palsy: an integrative literature review

    Get PDF
Purpose: to describe and analyze the clinical instruments that assess peripheral facial palsy through an integrative literature review. Methods: the precepts for this type of review were followed: research question, identification, selection of studies, and critical analysis. The Virtual Health Library (VHL), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Google Scholar, and PubMed databases were accessed to search for fully available articles published in national journals between January 2008 and July 2018. The terms used in the search were “Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences”, “Evaluation”, and “Facial Paralysis”, in both English and Portuguese. The data obtained were organized per author, title, objective, instruments used, description of the instruments, and application procedures used in the articles. Results: out of the total 992 articles found, only 18 met the inclusion criteria of the research. In most of them, there was only the citation of the assessment instruments or considerations about them, without fully describing the application procedures. Conclusion: the study identified publications that indicate the use of clinical and speech-language-hearing assessment instruments. However, further detailing is necessary regarding the assessment procedures to help develop and refine the speech-language-hearing methodologies and techniques.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
