    New type of Al-based decagonal quasicrystal in Al\u3csub\u3e60\u3c/sub\u3eCr\u3csub\u3e20\u3c/sub\u3eFe\u3csub\u3e10\u3c/sub\u3eSi\u3csub\u3e10\u3c/sub\u3e alloy

    A new kind of decagonal quasicrystal (DQC) with a periodicity of 1.23 nm was observed in the as-cast quaternary Al60Cr20Fe10Si10 alloy. The intensity distribution of some spots in the selected-area electron diffraction pattern along the tenfold zone axis was found to be different from other Al-based DQCs. High-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy was adopted to reveal the structural features at an atomic level. Both the tenfold symmetry and symmetry-broken decagonal (D) clusters of 1.91 nm in diameter were found, but with structural characteristics different from the corresponding D clusters in the other Al-based DQCs. The neighboring D clusters are connected by sharing one edge rather than covering, suggesting the tiling model is better than the covering model for structural description

    Deep Neural Network for Robust Speech Recognition With Auxiliary Features From Laser-Doppler Vibrometer Sensor

    Recently, the signal captured from a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) sensor been used to improve the noise robustness automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems by enhancing the acoustic signal prior to feature extraction. This study proposes another approach in which auxiliary features extracted from the LDV signal are used alongside conventional acoustic features to further improve ASR performance based on the use of a deep neural network (DNN) as the acoustic model. While this approach is promising, the best training data sets for ASR do not include LDV data in parallel with the acoustic signal. Thus, to leverage such existing large-scale speech databases, a regres- sion DNN is designed to map acoustic features to LDV features. This regression DNN is well trained from a limited size parallel signal data set, then used to form pseudo-LDV features from a massive speech data set for parallel training of an ASR system. Our experiments show that both the features from the limited scale LDV data set as well as the massive scale pseudo-LDV features are able to train an ASR system that significantly outperforms one using acoustic features alone, in both quiet and noisy environments

    Spin Speed and Supportedness Correlation and Evolution of Galaxy-Halo Systems

    Galaxy angular momenta (spins) contain valuable cosmological information, complementing with their positions and velocities. The baryonic spin direction of galaxies have been probed as a reliable tracer of their host halos and the primordial spin modes. Here we use the TNG100 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project to study the spin magnitude correlations between dark matter, gas and stellar components of galaxy-halo systems, and their evolutions across the cosmic history. We find that these components generate similar initial spin magnitudes from the same tidal torque in Lagrangian space. At low redshifts, the gas component still traces the spin magnitude of dark matter halo and the primordial spin magnitude. However, the traceability of stellar component depends on the exex situsitu stellar mass fraction, faccf_{\rm acc}. Our results suggest that the galaxy baryonic spin magnitude can also serve as a tracer of their host halo and the initial perturbations, and the similarity of their evolution histories affects the galaxy-halo correlations.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, comments welcom

    Development and validation of a prognostic nomogram for rectal cancer patients who underwent surgical resection

    Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a nomogram model for the prediction of survival outcome in rectal cancer patients who underwent surgical resection.Methods: A total of 9,919 consecutive patients were retrospectively identified using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Significant prognostic factors were determined by the univariate and multivariate Cox analysis. The nomogram model for the prediction of cancer-specific survival (CSS) in rectal cancer patients were developed based on these prognostic variables, and its predictive power was assessed by the concordance index (C-index). Calibration curves were plotted to evaluate the associations between predicted probabilities and actual observations. The internal and external cohort were used to further validate the predictive performance of the prognostic nomogram.Results: All patients from the SEER database were randomly split into a training cohort (n = 6,944) and an internal validation cohort (n = 2,975). The baseline characteristics of two cohorts was comparable. Independent prognostic factors were identified as age, pT stage, lymph node metastasis, serum CEA level, tumor size, differentiation type, perineural invasion, circumferential resection margin involvement and inadequate lymph node yield. In the training cohort, the C-index of the nomogram was 0.719 (95% CI: 0.696–0.742), which was significantly higher than that of the TNM staging system (C-index: 0.606, 95% CI: 0.583–0.629). The nomogram had a C-index of 0.726 (95% CI: 0.691–0.761) for the internal validation cohort, indicating a good predictive power. In addition, an independent cohort composed of 202 rectal cancer patients from our institution were enrolled as the external validation. Compared with the TNM staging system (C-index: 0.573, 95% CI: 0.492–0.654), the prognostic nomogram still showed a better predictive performance, with the C-index of 0.704 (95% CI: 0.626–0.782). Calibration plots showed a good consistency between predicted probability and the actual observation in the training and two validation cohorts.Conclusion: The nomogram showed an excellent predictive ability for survival outcome of rectal cancer patients, and it might provide an accurate prognostic stratification and help clinicians determine individualized treatment strategies

    Evaluating China's fossil-fuel CO2 emissions from a comprehensive dataset of nine inventories

    China s fossil-fuel CO2 (FFCO2) emissions accounted for approximately 28% of the global total FFCO2 in 2016. An accurate estimate of China s FFCO2 emissions is a prerequisite for global and regional carbon budget analyses and the monitoring of carbon emission reduction efforts. However, significant uncertainties and discrepancies exist in estimations of China s FFCO2 emissions due to a lack of detailed traceable emission factors (EFs) and multiple statistical data sources. Here, we evaluated China s FFCO2 emissions from nine published global and regional emission datasets. These datasets show that the total emissions increased from 3.4 (3.0 3.7) in 2000 to 9.8 (9.2 10.4) Gt CO2 yr-1 in 2016. The variations in these estimates were largely due to the different EF (0.491 0.746 t C per t of coal) and activity data. The large-scale patterns of gridded emissions showed a reasonable agreement, with high emissions being concentrated in major city clusters, and the standard deviation mostly ranged from 10% to 40% at the provincial level. However, patterns beyond the provincial scale varied significantly, with the top 5% of the grid level accounting for 50 % 90% of total emissions in these datasets. Our findings highlight the significance of using locally measured EF for Chinese coal. To reduce uncertainty, we recommend using physical CO2 measurements and use these values for dataset validation, key input data sharing (e.g., point sources), and finer-resolution validations at various levels

    The role of Tyro 3 subfamily receptors in the regulation of hemostasis and megakaryocytopoiesis

    Background and Objectives The molecular mechanisms regulating megakaryocytopoiesis and hemostasis remain largely unknown. The Tyro 3 subfamily of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTK), which is composed of three members (Tyro 3, Axl and Mer), plays important roles in various tissues, such as those in the nervous, immune and reproductive systems. Here, we investigate the roles of the Tyro 3 RTK subfamily in regulating megakaryocytopoiesis and hemostasis.Design and Methods Single, double, and triple knock-out mice for the three Tyro 3 RTK were used in the study. Bleeding time, platelet count, megakaryocyte count, megakaryocyte ploidy, rate of proplatelet formation, platelet aggregation and ATP release were used as criteria to evaluate hemostasis, megakaryocytopoiesis and platelet function.Results Mice lacking all three receptors had impaired hemostasis and mild thrombocytopenia, which may be due to platelet dysfunction and defective megakaryocytopoiesis. Mice lacking different combinations of two receptors of the Tyro 3 RTK subfamily had normal platelet counts in peripheral blood, but exhibited impaired hemostasis and platelet function. Although knock-out mice for any single receptor had normal hemostasis and megakaryocytopoiesis, they exhibited a mild platelet dysfunction.Interpretation and Conclusions The Tyro 3 RTK subfamily plays important roles in regulating hemostasis, megakaryocytopoiesis and platelet function

    Environment-economy tradeoff for Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei’s exports

    The trade of goods among regions or nations associated with large environmental consequences. Yet balancing economic gains and environmental consequences induced by trade is still hindered by a lack of quantification of these two factors, especially for the environmental problems those are more locally oriented, such as the atmospheric pollution. Based on an environmental input-output analysis for 2010, we contrast economic gains (value added) against atmospheric pollutant emissions (sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitric oxide (NOx), primary fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC)) and the widely concerned CO2 emissions associated with international and interprovincial exports from Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH), the most polluted area in China. Our results show that exports contributed 55-62% of BTH's production emissions and 54% of its total value added. BTH's large exports of metals and metal products, nonmetal mineral products, chemical and transportation and warehousing, generated a larger share of pollutant emissions (36-46% of BTH's total) than that of value added (17%) along the supply chain. Most of BTH's embodied emissions in exports go to neighboring provinces and the developed east coastal regions in China, although the economic returns are comparatively low. Among BTH, industrial production in Beijing and Tianjin lead to more pollutant emission than value added in Hebei, due to reliance on pollution-intensive product imports from Hebei. Our results call for refocusing and restructuring of BTH's industry and trade structures to balance the economic gains and environmental losses for each region
