    Spin Glass Behavior in RuSr2Gd1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10

    The dynamics of the magnetic properties of polycrystalline RuSr2Gd1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10 (Ru-1222) have been studied by ac susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements, including relaxation and ageing studies. Ru-1222 is a reported magneto-superconductor with Ru spins magnetic ordering at temperatures near 100 K and superconductivity in Cu-O2 planes below Tc ~ 40 K. The exact nature of Ru spins magnetic ordering is still debated and no conclusion has been reached yet. In this work, a frequency-dependent cusp was observed in ac susceptibility vs. T measurements, which is interpreted as a spin glass transition. The change in the cusp position with frequency follows the Vogel-Fulcher law, which is commonly accepted to describe a spin glass with magnetically interacting clusters. Such interpretation is supported by themoremanaent magnetization (TRM) measurements at T = 60 K. TRM relaxations are well described by a stretched exponential relation, and present significant ageing effects.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Exchange coupling in CaMnO3_3 and LaMnO3_3: configuration interaction and the coupling mechanism

    The equilibrium structure and exchange constants of CaMnO3_3 and LaMnO3_3 have been investigated using total energy unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) and localised orbital configuration interaction (CI) calculations on the bulk compounds and Mn2_2O1114−_{11}^{14-} and Mn2_2O1116−_{11}^{16-} clusters. The predicted structure and exchange constants for CaMnO3_3 are in reasonable agreement with estimates based on its N\'eel temperature. A series of calculations on LaMnO3_3 in the cubic perovskite structure shows that a Hamiltonian with independent orbital ordering and exchange terms accounts for the total energies of cubic LaMnO3_3 with various spin and orbital orderings. Computed exchange constants depend on orbital ordering. UHF calculations tend to underestimate exchange constants in LaMnO3_3, but have the correct sign when compared with values obtained by neutron scattering; exchange constants obtained from CI calculations are in good agreement with neutron scattering data provided the Madelung potential of the cluster is appropriate. Cluster CI calculations reveal a strong dependence of exchange constants on Mn d eg_g orbital populations in both compounds. CI wave functions are analysed in order to determine which exchange processes are important in exchange coupling in CaMnO3_3 and LaMnO3_3.Comment: 25 pages and 9 postscript figure

    Mutagenicactivity of glycoallkaloids from Solanum palinacanthum Dunal (Solanaceae) found in the brazilian cerrado

    Solanaceous plants are widely distributed around the world and they are traditionally used as drugs for the treatment of cancer and herpes, and include familiar foods such as potato, tomato and eggplant and some berries popular in Brazil. As part of a program of research on pharmacologically active new molecules, the aim in this study was to assess the mutagenic effects of Solanum palinacanthum, known popularly as joá. The crude 95% ethanol extract and purified solamargine obtained from the fruits of S. palinacanthum Dunal were investigated by the Ames test, using the Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98, TA97a, TA100 and TA102 as test organisms, with and without metabolic activation. The concentrations tested ranged from 0.07 to 15.0 mg/plate for the crude ethanolic extract and from 1.25 to 5.0 mg/plate for the solamargine. The results showed a mutagenic effect of both the extract and the solamargine in the TA98 strain (without metabolic activation). The present study showed the potential mutagenicity and suggests confirming this effect in other models, before recommending their indiscriminate consumption by the population.Colegio de Farmacéuticos de la Provincia de Buenos Aire

    Scaling behavior of the directed percolation universality class

    In this work we consider five different lattice models which exhibit continuous phase transitions into absorbing states. By measuring certain universal functions, which characterize the steady state as well as the dynamical scaling behavior, we present clear numerical evidence that all models belong to the universality class of directed percolation. Since the considered models are characterized by different interaction details the obtained universal scaling plots are an impressive manifestation of the universality of directed percolation.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Nuclear Physics

    Dimorphandra mollis: An alternative as a source of flavonoids with antioxidant action

    Os frutos da espécie Dimorphandra mollis são ricos nos flavonóides rutina e quercetina, que são compostos com alta atividade antioxidante, podendo assim ser utilizados na prevenção de enfermidades causados por radicais livres. O objetivo deste estudo foi obter um extrato rico em flavonóides a partir dos frutos de D. mollis. O extrato foi analisado utilizando os métodos de doseamento por espectrofotometria e cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência. Foi identificada a presença de rutina e quercetina no extrato, que apresentou um teor de flavonóides totais de 33,71 %. O extrato, ainda, apresentou ação antioxidante favorável frete aos radicais DPPH e ABTS. Assim, foi possível concluir que os frutos de D. mollis são uma rica fonte de flavonóides de ação antioxidante.Dimorphandra mollis fruits are rich in flavonoids rutin and quercetin, which are compounds with high antioxidant activity and can be used to prevent diseases caused by free radicals. The aim of this study was to obtain an extract rich in flavonoids from fruits of D. mollis. The extract was analyzed using the methods of determination by spectrophotometry and high performance liquid chromatography. The presence of rutin and quercetin was identified in the extract, which showed a total flavonoids content of 33.71 %. The extract also showed antioxidant activity as scanvanger of DPPH and ABTS radicals.     Adsorption of Cd, Cu, Ni and Zn in tropical soils under competitive and non-competitive systems

    The adsorption of heavy metals in soils affects their behavior in the environment and their bioavailability to plants. The knowledge of the adsorption mechanisms in competitive systems allows a more realistic evaluation of the metals' behavior in the soil than the single metal adsorption. The objectives of this study were (i) to evaluate Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn adsorption in 14 surface samples (0-0.2 m) of representative soils of the Brazilian humid-tropical region, in competitive and non-competitive systems, and (ii) to establish metal affinity sequences for each soil, based in the maximum adsorption capacity (MAC) estimated by the Langmuir model. The Rhodic Eutrudox, the Kandiudalf Eutrudox, the Arenic Hapludalf, the Arenic Hapludult and the Typic Argiudoll had the highest metals' adsorption capacity, whereas the Typic Quartzipsamment and the sandy-textured Arenic Hapludult had the lowest values. In general, the MAC values for metals were lower in the competitive than in the non-competitive system. In the non-competitive system, the most common affinity sequence was Cu > Zn > Ni > Cd, whereas the most common sequence was Cu > Cd > Zn > Ni in the competitive system. In general, the Langmuir model fitted well the adsorption data of metals on the studied soils.A adsorção de metais pesados em solos afeta seu comportamento e biodisponibilidade às plantas. O conhecimento dos mecanismos de adsorção em sistemas competitivos permite uma avaliação mais realista do comportamento dos metais no solo do que estudos com adsorção de cada metal, isoladamente. Os objetivos desse trabalho foram: (i) avaliar a adsorção de Cd, Cu, Ni e Zn em amostras superficiais (0-0,2 m) de 14 solos representativos da região tropical úmida, em sistema competitivo e não-competitivo, e (ii) estabelecer sequências de afinidade metálica para cada solo, com base nos valores de capacidade máxima de adsorção (CMA) dos metais estimados por meio do modelo de Langmuir. O Rhodic Eutrudox, o Kandiudalfic Eutrudox, o Arenic Hapludalf (Alf2), o Arenic Hapludult (Ult2) e o Typic Argiudoll apresentaram elevadas capacidades de adsorção dos metais, ocorrendo o inverso para o Typic Quartzipsamment e para o Arenic Hapludult textura arenosa. No geral, a CMA dos metais aos solos foi menor no sistema competitivo. A sequência de afinidade mais comumente encontrada no sistema não-competitivo foi Cu > Zn > Ni > Cd. No sistema competitivo, a sequência foi Cu > Cd > Zn > Ni. Em geral, o modelo de Langmuir simulou de maneira satisfatória a adsorção dos metais nas amostras de solo
