    Environmental Costs of Government-Sponsored Agrarian Settlements in Brazilian Amazonia

    Brazil has presided over the most comprehensive agrarian reform frontier colonization program on Earth, in which ~1.2 million settlers have been translocated by successive governments since the 1970's, mostly into forested hinterlands of Brazilian Amazonia. These settlements encompass 5.3% of this ~5 million km2 region, but have contributed with 13.5% of all land conversion into agropastoral land uses. The Brazilian Federal Agrarian Agency (INCRA) has repeatedly claimed that deforestation in these areas largely predates the sanctioned arrival of new settlers. Here, we quantify rates of natural vegetation conversion across 1911 agrarian settlements allocated to 568 Amazonian counties and compare fire incidence and deforestation rates before and after the official occupation of settlements by migrant farmers. The timing and spatial distribution of deforestation and fires in our analysis provides irrefutable chronological and spatially explicit evidence of agropastoral conversion both inside and immediately outside agrarian settlements over the last decade. Deforestation rates are strongly related to local human population density and road access to regional markets. Agrarian settlements consistently accelerated rates of deforestation and fires, compared to neighboring areas outside settlements, but within the same counties. Relocated smallholders allocated to forest areas undoubtedly operate as pivotal agents of deforestation, and most of the forest clearance occurs in the aftermath of government-induced migration

    Trata-se de pesquisa de intervenção, realizada em uma Unidade BĂĄsica de SaĂșde do municĂ­pio de Colombo, ParanĂĄ, de março a novembro de 2009, com 35 portadores de doença crĂŽnica, com idades entre 18 e 60 anos, cadastrados no Programa de HipertensĂŁo e Diabetes. Os objetivos foram: identificar o conhecimento sobre a hipertensĂŁo arterial e intervir mediante atividades educativas em grupo. A coleta de dados ocorreu por meio de entrevista semiestruturada e quatro encontros em grupos, e da sua anĂĄlise emergiram as categorias: “CompreensĂŁo da doença” e “Maneiras de cuidar”. Constatou-se que os usuĂĄrios conhecem a doença, os seus fatores de risco e as possĂ­veis complicaçÔes, e que as atividades educativas favoreceram a troca de experiĂȘncias, proporcionaram a reflexĂŁo e a possibilidade de gestĂŁo de seu tratamento, e Ă© uma estratĂ©gia que deve ser utilizada e divulgada pelos enfermeiros.

    Ecological phytochemistry of Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) plants

    The Cerrado (the Brazilian savanna) is one of the vegetation formations of great biodiversity in Brazil and it has experienced strong deforestation and fragmentation. The Cerrado must contain at least 12,000 higher plant species.We discuss the ecological relevance of phytochemical studies carried out on plants from the Cerrado, including examples of phytotoxicity, antifungal, insecticidal and antibacterial activities. The results have been classified according to activity and plant family. The most active compounds have been highlighted and other activities are discussed. A large number of complex biochemical interactions occur in this system. However, only a small fraction of the species has been studied from the phytochemical viewpoint to identify the metabolites responsible for these interactions

    Data from an International Multi-Centre Study of Statistics and Mathematics Anxieties and Related Variables in University Students (the SMARVUS Dataset)

    This large, international dataset contains survey responses from N = 12,570 students from 100 universities in 35 countries, collected in 21 languages. We measured anxieties (statistics, mathematics, test, trait, social interaction, performance, creativity, intolerance of uncertainty, and fear of negative evaluation), self-efficacy, persistence, and the cognitive reflection test, and collected demographics, previous mathematics grades, self-reported and official statistics grades, and statistics module details. Data reuse potential is broad, including testing links between anxieties and statistics/mathematics education factors, and examining instruments’ psychometric properties across different languages and contexts

    Spectrophotometric determination of caramel content in spirits aged in oak casks

    A new methodology was developed for determination of caramel in spirits aged in oak casks. The method is based on differences between the electronic spectra of oak aqueous alcoholic extracts and caramel solutions in the same solvent. The data were treated by 2 different approaches: the simplest one was based on the plot of caramel concentration versus the ratio of absorbance at 210 and 282 nm; the other was based on a partial least squares (PLS) calibration model using the first derivative of the spectral data. Both methodologies were applied to analysis of 159 aged spirit samples. The mean caramel content of several Brazilian sugar cane spirits (cachaga) and all United States whiskies was smaller than that of Scottish whiskies and other brandies from several countries. Correlation was good between caramel concentrations for the same sample calculated by the 2 methods. The uncertainties following PLS and the absorbance ratio method were 0.01 and 0.03 g/L, respectively, for a sample containing 0.45 g/L caramel. Treatment of UV-VIS spectra by pattern recognition using hierarchical clustering analysis and principal components analysis allowed discrimination of the samples as a function of their caramel content. It was possible to distinguish U.S. whiskies from other whiskies, but a clear differentiation among Brazilian cachagas as a function of their geographic origin was not feasible. Small caramel quantities as low as 0.08 g/L were clearly detected by these methodologies.85374475
