    Notional defined contribution pension schemes: Why does only Sweden distribute the survivor dividend?

    The aim of this paper is to analyse the role of the survivor dividend in notional defined contribution (NDC) pension schemes. At present, this feature can only be found in the Swedish defined contribution scheme. We develop a model that endorses the idea that the survivor dividend has a strong basis for enabling the NDC scheme to achieve financial equilibrium and that not including the dividend is a non-transparent way of compensating for increases in longevity and/or legacy costs from old pension systems. We also find that the average effect of the dividend remains unchanged for any constant annual rate of population growth, that contribu-tors who reach retirement age always get a higher return than the scheme does, and that population growth enables cohorts with more years of contributions to benefit to a greater extent from the dividend effect

    Quattor: Tools and Techniques for the Configuration, Installation and Management of Large-Scale Grid Computing Fabrics

    This paper describes the quattor tool suite, a new system for the installation, configuration, and management of operating systems and application software for computing fabrics. At present Unix derivatives such as Linux and Solaris are supported. Quattor is a powerful, portable and modular open source solution that has been shown to scale to thousands of computing nodes and offers a significant reduction in management costs for large computing fabrics. The quattor tool suite includes innovations compared to existing solutions which make it very useful for computing fabrics integrated into grid environments. Evaluations of the tool suite in current large scale computing environments are presented

    Vegetation vulnerability to drought in Spain

    Revista oficial de la Asociación Española de Teledetección[EN] Frequency of climatic extremes like long duration droughts has increased in Spain over the last century.The use of remote sensing observations for monitoring and detecting drought is justified on the basis that vegetation vigor is closely related to moisture condition. We derive satellite estimates of bio-physical variables such as fractional vegetation cover (FVC) from MODIS/EOS and SEVIRI/MSG time series. The study evaluates the strength of temporal relationships between precipitation and vegetation condition at time-lag and cumulative rainfall intervals. From this analysis, it was observed that the climatic disturbances affected both the growing season and the total amount of vegetation. However, the impact of climate variability on the vegetation dynamics has shown to be highly dependent on the regional climate, vegetation community and growth stages. In general, they were more significant in arid and semiarid areas, since water availability most strongly limits vegetation growth in these environments.[EN] Los extremos climáticos se han incrementado en España a los largo del último siglo; por ello, su análisis se ha convertido en una línea prioritaria de conocimiento con objeto fundamental de diseñar planes para la gestión y mitigación de sus efectos. Los datos de satélite permiten analizar las variaciones en la actividad de la vegetación a varias escalas temporales y su respuesta a la variabilidad climática. En este trabajo se pone de manifiesto la vulnera-bilidad de la vegetación en España ante condiciones ambientales extremas a través de las correlaciones entre índices meteorológicos de sequía (SPI) y variables biofísicas extraídas de datos MODIS/EOS y SEVIRI/MSG. Las anomalías en la vegetación, como indicadores de las condiciones de humedad de la misma, pueden ayudar a cuantificar y gestionar episodios meteorológicos extremos y hacer un seguimiento de la misma.     Seguimiento de la cubierta vegetal en la península ibérica a partir de sensores de nueva generación y su interrelación con variables climáticas

    Ponencia presentada en: XIII Congreso de la Asociación Española de Teledetección celebrado en Calatayud del 23 al 26 septiembre 2009.[ES]El objetivo principal del proyecto DULCINEA ha sido el desarrollo de una metodología multi-sensor para estimar parámetros biofísicos de la cubierta vegetal. La metodología desarrollada ha proporcionado estimaciones precisas de variables biofísicas de la vegetación (FVC, LAI) que han mostrado ser adecuadas para observar las variaciones inter- e intra-anuales de la cubierta en la Península Ibérica durante un periodo de 9 años (2000-2008). Los parámetros biofísicos obtenidos han permitido evaluar la vulnerabilidad de la vegetación ante condiciones ambientales extremas a nivel de la Península Ibérica. Un paso previo ha consistido en la elaboración de mapas detallados de parámetros climáticos y tipos de cubierta dominantes en la zona. Los modelos estadísticos aplicados han evidenciado una correlación significativa entre las variables biofísicas extraídas y algunas variables meteorológicas e índices de sequía operacionales. Esta interrelación es muy dependiente del tipo de cubierta y de las características climáticas de cada región. Se han encontrado correlaciones entre las anomalías de la cobertura vegetal y el SPI especialmente significativas para el caso de las regiones más secas, con valores típicos de R2 entre 0.4 y 0.7 durante los meses de Mayo y Junio.[EN]The main objective of the DULCINEA project is to provide coherent estimates of bio-physical variables such as fractional vegetation cover (FVC) and leaf area index (LAI) at regional to global scales. One of the goals of the project is to assess the potential of derived biophysical variables in the field of drought conditions monitoring. The aim was to analyse the vulnerability of natural ecosystems against the effects of climate fluctuations like drought and extreme events in the Iberian Peninsula, from the inter-correlation between the retrieved parameters and drought indices such as the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). The climatic disturbances affected both the growing season and the total amount of vegetation.     The Battle of the Water Networks II (BWN-II)

    The Battle of the Water Networks II (BWN-II) is the latest of a series of competitions related to the design and operation of water distribution systems (WDSs) undertaken within the Water Distribution Systems Analysis (WDSA) Symposium series. The BWN-II problem specification involved a broadly defined design and operation problem for an existing network that has to be upgraded for increased future demands, and the addition of a new development area. The design decisions involved addition of new and parallel pipes, storage, operational controls for pumps and valves, and sizing of backup power supply. Design criteria involved hydraulic, water quality, reliability, and environmental performance measures. Fourteen teams participated in the Battle and presented their results at the 14th Water Distribution Systems Analysis (WDSA 2012) conference in Adelaide, Australia, September 2012. This paper summarizes the approaches used by the participants and the results they obtained. Given the complexity of the BWN-II problem and the innovative methods required to deal with the multi-objective, high dimensional and computationally demanding nature of the problem, this paper represents a snap-shot of state of the art methods for the design and operation of water distribution systems. A general finding of this paper is that there is benefit in using a combination of heuristic engineering experience and sophisticated optimization algorithms when tackling complex real-world water distribution system design problems.Angela Marchi...Angus R.     Arqueologia e história indígena no Pantanal

    O artigo apresenta uma síntese dos dados arqueológicos sobre o Pantanal e o seu entorno, principalmente em Mato Grosso e Mato Grosso do Sul. Elaborado com base na noção de arqueologia como história indígena de longa duração, o artigo considera as trajetórias de estabelecimento e consolidação territorial da ocupação indígena regional, os processos de formação da configuração etnográfica encontrada pelos europeus e os impactos do colonialismo. O principal objetivo consiste em mostrar que a diversidade cultural característica do cenário etnográfico pantaneiro está associada à dinâmica histórica e cultural da ocupação indígena desde períodos anteriores à chegada dos conquistadores e colonizadores de origem europeia.The article presents an overview of the archaeological data on the Pantanal and its surrounding areas, mainly in Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. Prepared based on the notion of archeology as long term indigenous history, the article considers the trajectories of territorial establishment and consolidation of the regional indigenous occupation, the formation processes of ethnographic setting found by Europeans and the impact of colonialism. The main objective is to show that cultural diversity characteristic of the Pantanal ethnographic scenario is associated with historical and cultural dynamics of indigenous occupation from periods prior to the arrival of the conquistadors and settlers of European origin
