    Serological Survey on Toxoplasma gondii in some Dairy Animals and Pregnant Women in Qena, Egypt

    Toxoplasmosis is an important reason of reproductive failure in human and farm animals causing significant socioeconomic losses worldwide. Additionally, infection in pregnant women can cause severe health problems in the child as mental retardation and blindness. In this work the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection was estimated in dairy goats, sheep, and cows as well as in pregnant women in Qena Province, Egypt using the Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). The study included 150 raw milk samples which were collected from the previously mentioned animals in different localities (50 from each) as well as 100 pregnant women serum samples with a history of abortion. Our results revealed that T. gondii IgM and both IgM & IgG antibodies were detected in 20, 40 and 28, 6% of goat and sheep milk samples, respectively. While T. gondii IgM antibodies could be detected in 64% of cow milk samples. A total of 28 (28%) women were seropositive for toxoplasmosis, divided into 2 (2%) were seropositive for T. gondii IgM antibodies and 26 (26%) for IgG. There was an association between IgG seroprevalence and age and the times of abortion in pregnant women

    Midwives\u27 use of best available evidence in practice: An integrative review

    Aims and objectives: To synthesise international research that relates to midwives\u27 use of best available evidence in practice settings and identify key issues relating to the translation of latest evidence into everyday maternity care. Background: Midwifery is a research‐informed profession. However, a gap persists in the translation of best available evidence into practice settings, compromising gold standard maternity care and delaying the translation of new knowledge into everyday practice. Design: A five‐step integrative review approach, based on a series of articles published by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) for conducting systematic reviews, was used to facilitate development of a search strategy, selection criteria and quality appraisal process, and the extraction and synthesis of data to inform an integrative review. Methods: The databases CINAHL, MEDLINE, Web of Science, Implementation Science Journal and Scopus were searched for relevant articles. The screening and quality appraisal process complied with the PRISMA 2009 checklist. Narrative analysis was used to develop sub‐categories and dimensions from the data, which were then synthesised to form two major categories that together answer the review question. Results: The six articles reviewed report on midwives\u27 use of best available evidence in Australia, the UK and Asia. Two major categories emerged that confirm that although midwifery values evidence‐based practice (EBP), evidence‐informed maternity care is not always employed in clinical settings. Additionally, closure of the evidence‐to‐practice gap in maternity care requires a multidimensional approach. Conclusion: Collaborative partnerships between midwives and researchers are necessary to initiate strategies that support midwives\u27 efforts to facilitate the timely movement of best available evidence into practice. Relevance to clinical practice: Understanding midwives\u27 use of best available evidence in practice will direct future efforts towards the development of mechanisms that facilitate the timely uptake of latest evidence by all maternity care providers working in clinical settings

    Feature integration in natural language concepts

    Two experiments measured the joint influence of three key sets of semantic features on the frequency with which artifacts (Experiment 1) or plants and creatures (Experiment 2) were categorized in familiar categories. For artifacts, current function outweighed both originally intended function and current appearance. For biological kinds, appearance and behavior, an inner biological function, and appearance and behavior of offspring all had similarly strong effects on categorization. The data were analyzed to determine whether an independent cue model or an interactive model best accounted for how the effects of the three feature sets combined. Feature integration was found to be additive for artifacts but interactive for biological kinds. In keeping with this, membership in contrasting artifact categories tended to be superadditive, indicating overlapping categories, whereas for biological kinds, it was subadditive, indicating conceptual gaps between categories. It is argued that the results underline a key domain difference between artifact and biological concepts

    Differences in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium strain invasiveness are associated with heterogeneity in SPI-1 gene expression

    Most studies on Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium infection focus on strains ATCC SL1344 or NTCC 12023 (ATCC 14028). We have compared the abilities of these strains to induce membrane ruffles and invade epithelial cells. S. Typhimurium strain 12023 is less invasive and induces smaller membrane ruffles on MDCK cells compared with SL1344. Since the SPI-1 effector SopE is present in SL1344 and absent from 12023, and SL1344 sopE mutants have reduced invasiveness, we investigated whether 12023 is less invasive due to the absence of SopE. However, comparison of SopE+ and SopE− S. Typhimurium strains, sopE deletion mutants and 12023 expressing a sopE plasmid revealed no consistent relationship between SopE status and relative invasiveness. Nevertheless, absence of SopE was closely correlated with reduced size of membrane ruffles. A PprgH–gfp reporter revealed that relatively few of the 12023 population (and that of the equivalent strain ATCC 14028) express SPI-1 compared to other S. Typhimurium strains. Expression of a PhilA–gfp reporter mirrored that of PprgH–gfp in 12023 and SL1344, implicating reduced signalling via the transcription factor HilA in the heterogeneous SPI-1 expression of these strains. The previously unrecognized strain heterogeneity in SPI-1 expression and invasiveness has important implications for studies of Salmonella infection

    The dopaminergic system in patients with functional dyspepsia analysed by single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and an alpha-methyl-para-tyrosine (AMPT) challenge test

    Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a chronic condition characterized by upper abdominal symptoms without an identifiable cause. While the serotonergic system is thought to play a key role in the regulation of gut physiology, the role of the dopaminergic system, which is important in the regulation of visceral pain and stress, is under-studied. Therefore, this study investigated the dopaminergic system and its relationship with drinking capacity and symptoms in FD patients. In FD patients and healthy volunteers (HV) the dopaminergic system was investigated by in-vivo assessment of central dopamine D2 receptors (D2Rs) with [I-123]IBZM SPECT and by an acute, but reversible, dopamine depletion alpha-methyl-para-tyrosine (AMPT) challenge test. A nutrient drink test was performed to investigate the association between maximal ingested volume, evoked symptoms, and D2Rs. The HV subjects comprised 12 women and 8 men (mean age 31 +/- 3 years), and the FD patients comprised 5 women and 3 men (mean age 39 +/- 5 years). The FD patients had a lower left plus right average striatal binding potential (BPNP) for the caudate nucleus (p = 0.02), but not for putamen (p = 0.15), which in the FD patients was correlated with maximal ingested volume (r = 0.756, p = 0.03). The D2R BPNP in the putamen was correlated with nausea (r = 0.857, p = 0.01). The acute dopamine depletion test, however, failed to reveal differences in prolactin release between the FD patients and the HV subjects. These preliminary data suggest that chronic rather than acute alterations in the dopaminergic system may be involved in the pathogenesis of FD. Further studies are required to reproduce our novel findings and to evaluate to what extent the dopaminergic changes may be secondary to abnormalities in serotonergic pathway
