    Anisotropy of Alfv\'enic Turbulence in the Solar Wind and Numerical Simulations

    We investigate the anisotropy of Alfv\'enic turbulence in the inertial range of slow solar wind and in both driven and decaying reduced magnetohydrodynamic simulations. A direct comparison is made by measuring the anisotropic second-order structure functions in both data sets. In the solar wind, the perpendicular spectral index of the magnetic field is close to -5/3. In the forced simulation, it is close to -5/3 for the velocity and -3/2 for the magnetic field. In the decaying simulation, it is -5/3 for both fields. The spectral index becomes steeper at small angles to the local magnetic field direction in all cases. We also show that when using the global rather than local mean field, the anisotropic scaling of the simulations cannot always be properly measured.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

    A Calibrated Time Domain Envelope Measurement System for the Behavioral Modeling of Power Amplifiers

    This paper presents a set-up which enables the generation and the calibrated time domain measurements of complex envelopes of modulated signals at both ports of non linear microwave power amplifiers. The architecture of the characterization tool is given. Examples of error corrected time domain envelopes at the input / output RF ports of a 36 dBm output power – 30dB power gain L-band SSPA are shown. Futhermore, the use of this characterization tool and a suitable processing of measurement data are applied to a novel measurement based behavioral modeling approach of non linear devices accounting for memory effects

    Kondo decoherence: finding the right spin model for iron impurities in gold and silver

    We exploit the decoherence of electrons due to magnetic impurities, studied via weak localization, to resolve a longstanding question concerning the classic Kondo systems of Fe impurities in the noble metals gold and silver: which Kondo-type model yields a realistic description of the relevant multiple bands, spin and orbital degrees of freedom? Previous studies suggest a fully screened spin SS Kondo model, but the value of SS remained ambiguous. We perform density functional theory calculations that suggest S=3/2S = 3/2. We also compare previous and new measurements of both the resistivity and decoherence rate in quasi 1-dimensional wires to numerical renormalization group predictions for S=1/2,1S=1/2,1 and 3/2, finding excellent agreement for S=3/2S=3/2.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, shortened for PR

    Scaling of the low temperature dephasing rate in Kondo systems

    We present phase coherence time measurements in quasi-one-dimensional Ag wires doped with Fe Kondo impurities of different concentrations nsn_s. Due to the relatively high Kondo temperature TK4.3KT_{K}\approx 4.3K of this system, we are able to explore a temperature range from above TKT_{K} down to below 0.01TK0.01 T_{K}. We show that the magnetic contribution to the dephasing rate γm\gamma_m per impurity is described by a single, universal curve when plotted as a function of (T/TK)(T/T_K). For T>0.1TKT>0.1 T_K, the dephasing rate is remarkably well described by recent numerical results for spin S=1/2S=1/2 impurities. At lower temperature, we observe deviations from this theory. Based on a comparison with theoretical calculations for S>1/2S>1/2, we discuss possible explanations for the observed deviations.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

    Nanometer Scale Mapping of the Density of States in an Inhomogeneous Superconductor

    Using high speed scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we perform a full mapping of the quasiparticle density of states (DOS) in single crystals of BiPbSrCaCuO(2212). The measurements carried out at 5 K showed a complex spatial pattern of important variations of the local DOS on the nanometer scale. Superconducting areas are co-existing with regions of a smooth and larger gap-like DOS structure. The superconducting regions are found to have a minimum size of about 3 nm. The role of Pb-introduced substitutional disorder in the observed spatial variations of the local DOS is discussed.Comment: 4 page Letter with 3 figures (2 color figures

    ERRATUM: Correlations at Large Scales and the Onset of Turbulence in the Fast Solar Wind

    We show that the scaling of structure functions of magnetic and velocity fields in a mostly highly Alfvenic fast solar wind stream depends strongly on the joint distribution of the dimensionless measures of cross helicity and residual energy. Already at very low frequencies, fluctuations that are both more balanced (cross helicity approx. 0) and equipartitioned (residual energy approx.0) have steep structure functions reminiscent of "turbulent" scalings usually associated with the inertial range. Fluctuations that are magnetically dominated (residual energy approx. 1), and so have closely anti-aligned Elsasser-field vectors, or are imbalanced (cross helicity approx. 1), and so have closely aligned magnetic and velocity vectors, have wide "1/f" ranges typical of fast solar wind. We conclude that the strength of nonlinear interactions of individual fluctuations within a stream, diagnosed by the degree of correlation in direction and magnitude of magnetic and velocity fluctuations, determines the extent of the 1/f region observed, and thus the onset scale for the turbulent cascade

    A Comparison of Two-Level and Multi-level Modelling for Cloud-Based Applications

It comprises a domain-specific language to model the deployment topology of multi-cloud applications, along with a models@run-time environment to facilitate reasoning and adaptation of these applications at run-time. This paper reports on some challenges encountered during the design of CloudMF, related to the adoption of the two-level modelling approach and especially the type-instance pattern.     Caracterização morfobiológica, morfométrica e ultraestrutural de isolados silvestres de Trypanosoma cruzi do estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

    Triatoma vitticeps is a triatomine with geographic distribution restrict to Brazil, which exhibits high prevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi natural infection. Of special epidemiologic concern, this species often invades households in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo. The objective of this study was to evaluate morphological and ultrastructural parameters on three T. cruzi isolates obtained from wild T. vitticeps specimens. The growth and cell differentiation of the parasite was evaluated through epimastigote and trypomastigote forms obtained in the growth curves for three distinct isolates. The maximum growth showed differences at the 20th day of the curve. Our in vitro results show a heterogeneity, regarding these features for samples cultivated under the same conditions. Morphometric analyzes based on the shape of epimastigotes and trypomastigotes corroborated such differentiation. Esta espécie é relevante sob o ponto de vista epidemiológico por invadir domicílios com frequência nos estados do Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais e Espírito Santo. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar parâmetros morfológicos e ultraestruturais, em três isolados de T. cruzi obtidos a partir de triatomíneos silvestres. O crescimento e a diferenciação celular do parasita foi avaliado através das formas epimastigotas e tripomastigotas obtidas nas curvas de crescimento para os três isolados. O crescimento máximo mostrou diferenças no 20º dia da curva. Nossos resultados in vitro mostram uma heterogeneidade, em relação a essas características para amostras cultivadas nas mesmas condições. As análises morfométricas baseadas na conformação de epimastigotas e trypomastigotes corroboraram essa diferenciação.
