ALTERAÇÕES TEMPORAIS SOBRE A ESTRUTURA FUNCIONAL DAS ASSEMBLEIAS DE PEIXES DURANTE ONZE ANOS DE FORMAÇÃO DE UM RESERVATÓRIO DO MÉDIO RIO TOCANTINS, BRASIL
The damming of rivers for the construction of hydroelectric dams represents an important generator of environmental impact in the aquatic ecosystem, affecting the composition and the diversity of the fish fauna. This work aims to evaluate the temporal changes in the functional structure of fish assemblages in the Tocantins River before and after the construction of the Lajeado dam. Were used fourteen functional attributes measured from the fauna of fish collected with gillnet during eleven hydrological periods. Functional attributes related to size, body size, habitat use and reproductive strategy were more sensitive to the formation of fifteen functional groups. In general, there was an increase in the abundance of all groups after the reservoir, with more occurrence of small species, fusiform or compressed body and pelagic or benthopelagic habitat. Demersal habitat species, long-distance migrators and body size large were the most affected by the reservoir, with a strong reduction of abundance (less than 1% of the total). The analysis based on the construction of functional groups helps to identify the traits that are more sensitive to the new condition imposed by the reservoirs. So that the upstream area, of lotic nature, are recognized the priority conservation areas and free of new hydroelectric projects, in order to ensure the survival of species that share the most sensitive traits.
The Brazilian economy during the old regime crisis (c. 1750-1807)
Published online: 28 January 2022While some authors defend the existence of a widespread economic crisis in Brazil during the 18th century, motivated by the fall in the extraction of precious metals, others suggest that the colonial economy maintained a positive performance thanks to the growth of its domestic market. The main goal of this article is to challenge these two explanations, showing that different rhythms of development characterised Brazil's economy in each of its regions. We show that between the 1750s and 1790s, the Amazon region (Maranhão and Pará) experienced uninterrupted growth. Despite some fluctuations, Bahia and Pernambuco showed a tendency towards growth while the centre-south (Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais) suffered an economic contraction. We conclude that there was a stagnation in the added value of exports from all regions, whilst simultaneous growth for all territories occurred only after 1790
JAK2 V617F Mutation Prevalence in Myeloproliferative Neoplasms in Pernambuco, Brazil
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Background: The JAK2 V617F mutation is associated with three myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs): polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET), and primary myelofibrosis (PMF). It generates an unregulated clonal hematopoietic progenitor and leads to abnormal increased proliferation of one or more myeloid lineages. Subjects bearing this mutation may present more frequently with complications such as thrombosis and bleeding, and no specific treatment has yet been developed for BCR-ABL-negative JAK2 V617F-negative MPNs. Aims: To determine the prevalence of JAK2 V617F in MPNs in Pernambuco, Brazil, and to compare it with previous studies. Material and Methods: 144 blood samples were collected at the Hospital of Hematology of the HEMOPE Foundation and were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism with BsaXI enzymatic digestion. Results and Discussion: 88% (46/52) of the patients with PV, 47% (39/81) with ET, and 77% (8/11) with PMF were positive for JAK2 V617F, while more than 35% of the individuals were JAK2 V617F-negative, confirming a high prevalence of this abnormality in MPNs, more frequently with a low mutated allele burden, similar to what has been reported in other Western countries, despite differences among methods used to detect this mutation. Screening for JAK2 V617F may allow specific management of these diseases with JAK2 inhibitors in the future and highlights the need for further studies on the pathogenesis of BCR-ABL-negative JAK2 V617F-negative MPNs.167802805Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundacao de Amparo a Ciencia e Tecnologia do Estado de Pernambuco (FACEPE)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq
Universal Properties of Mythological Networks
As in statistical physics, the concept of universality plays an important,
albeit qualitative, role in the field of comparative mythology. Here we apply
statistical mechanical tools to analyse the networks underlying three iconic
mythological narratives with a view to identifying common and distinguishing
quantitative features. Of the three narratives, an Anglo-Saxon and a Greek text
are mostly believed by antiquarians to be partly historically based while the
third, an Irish epic, is often considered to be fictional. Here we show that
network analysis is able to discriminate real from imaginary social networks
and place mythological narratives on the spectrum between them. Moreover, the
perceived artificiality of the Irish narrative can be traced back to anomalous
features associated with six characters. Considering these as amalgams of
several entities or proxies, renders the plausibility of the Irish text
comparable to the others from a network-theoretic point of view.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. Updated to incorporate corrections from

Multiple populations in globular clusters. Lessons learned from the Milky Way globular clusters
Recent progress in studies of globular clusters has shown that they are not
simple stellar populations, being rather made of multiple generations. Evidence
stems both from photometry and spectroscopy. A new paradigm is then arising for
the formation of massive star clusters, which includes several episodes of star
formation. While this provides an explanation for several features of globular
clusters, including the second parameter problem, it also opens new
perspectives about the relation between globular clusters and the halo of our
Galaxy, and by extension of all populations with a high specific frequency of
globular clusters, such as, e.g., giant elliptical galaxies. We review progress
in this area, focusing on the most recent studies. Several points remain to be
properly understood, in particular those concerning the nature of the polluters
producing the abundance pattern in the clusters and the typical timescale, the
range of cluster masses where this phenomenon is active, and the relation
between globular clusters and other satellites of our Galaxy.Comment: In press (The Astronomy and Astrophysics Review
