Texture analysis in an apple progeny through instrumental, sensory and histological phenotyping

    Get PDF
Phenotypic analysis of texture traits was performed in an apple progeny by three complementary approaches: two classical instrumental measurements (compression and penetrometry), sensory assessment and histological screening. The progeny was composed of 141 individuals harvested over 2 years. Sensory and instrumental texture were assessed at harvest and after 2 and 4 months of cold storage. Histological screening was performed by combining macro-vision of outer parenchyma sections and image analysis on fruits after 2 months storage. Harvest year was observed to have a major impact on texture phenotypes followed by storage and genetic factors. Principal component analysis of data from the instrumental texture evaluations showed that the two methods complemented each other in characterizing the texture of the apple progeny. Compression parameters correlated better than penetrometry variables with sensory descriptors related to crispness, firmness, and graininess. Cell size distribution differentiated individuals in the apple progeny. It correlated with instrumental texture analyses and with juiciness perception. All measured texture related traits showed that they were all under genetic control with high heritability values. Higher values were obtained for fruits after 2 months storage. These results provide ground for future search of new apple texture QTLs

The Government of Province of Chimborazo had an enriching and participatory process of about three years that resulted in the construction of a Competitiveness Agenda to mark a line of projection for productive development. Within a reading of agricultural strategies, a set of products with a deep social relationship was required, but which present serious weaknesses in terms of productivity and market possibilities, for example, such as diverse varieties of Andean tubers, or certain gramineous, but not for this, we must overreach these crops against development, instead, depending on sustainability they are a priority to rescue, maintain and value. The objective of this work is to make a contextualization and conceptualization in a preliminary way in order to identify and characterize agricultural products of heritage importance for the province of Chimborazo. As part of process from Competitiveness Agenda of Province of Chimborazo, the need arose to establish an investigation that broadened base information to generate support and criteria for establishing appropriate and timely strategies, co-responsibility with the effort of the Chimboracense community, especially the rural sector, in the appropriation of their conditions and the search for productive identity for the province. New technology in Museums: AR and VR video games are coming

    Get PDF
Museums have gone through a modernization process which has seen the adoption of new technologies in what they offer visitors. Within the framework of the new critical museology, these organizations have been transformed into places of encounter and experience, the key tools in this change being socialization and play. Gamification are now intrinsic to collections and are a way of inviting visitors to share new museum experiences through the latest technology such as AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality). In this way, the museum becomes a playground and a space for creativity (Borja-Villel et al., 2014). In this research, we focus on what we consider to be an important link between the three central aspects of museum change: sociability, gamificaction and virtualization; and the growing interest in museums for videogames. Our aim is to reach a better understanding of the AR and VR video games developed for museums and how these technologies can not only motivate visitors’ interest but also improve their learning skills. Our analysis focuses of literature published between 2015 to 2018 and follows the analytic structure established by Connolly et al. (2012) with additional features related to learning experience, platforms, and the use of technologies (VR and AR). The general aim is to map the interest of the research community in the field of museum-developed video games, more specifically those that use augmented and virtual reality

The goal of this study was to compare anthocyanin extraction from Arbutus unedo L. fruits, by using two techniques assisted by different energy sources, heat and ultrasound. In order to obtain the conditions that maximize anthocyanin extraction, a response surface methodology was applied using the circumscribed central composite design of three variables with five levels. Three anthocyanin compounds were identified by HPLC-DAD-ESI/MS, being cyanidin-3-glucoside the main molecule. Heat assisted extraction proved to be the most effective method at 5 min, 90 °C and 80% of ethanol, yielding 51.2% of extract, with a total anthocyanin content of 382.4 μg/g dried fruit, and 744.6 μg/g extract. These response values were slightly improved by studying the solid/liquid effect at the optimal conditions in dose-response format, showing steady extraction values from 5 to 40 g/L. Results show the possibility of using A. unedo fruits as a source of anthocyanin compounds for industrial applications. The authors are grateful to the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Portugal) and FEDER under Programme PT2020 for financial support to CIMO (UID/AGR/00690/2013), LA LSRE-LCM (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-006984), L. Condiciones climáticas desfavorables limitan la producción vegetal y animal.

Matthiola incana (L.) R. Br. (Brassicaceae) is widely cultivated for ornamental purposes and utilized as a medicinal plant. In the present work, the hydroalcoholic extract from the aerial parts of this species has been evaluated in different bioassays in order to detect potential pharmacological applications. The cytotoxic capacity against the human colorectal adenocarcinoma (CaCo-2) and breast cancer (MCF-7) cell lines was tested using the MTT (3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay. The extract was investigated as a neuroprotective inhibitor of central nervous system (CNS) enzymes such as monoamine oxidase A, tyrosinase, acetylcholinesterase, and as a natural enzyme inhibitor of a-glucosidase and lipase involved in some metabolic disorders such as obesity or type 2 diabetes. The antioxidant ability was also evaluated in an enzymatic system (xanthine/xanthine oxidase assay). Results showed that the M. incana extract displayed moderate to low cytotoxicity vs. CaCo-2 cells. The extract acted as a superoxide radical scavenger and enzymatic inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A, tyrosinase, a-glucosidase, and lipase. The best results were found in the a-glucosidase assay, as M. incana hydroalcoholic extract was able to inhibit the enzyme a-glucosidase up to 100% without significant differences, compared to the antidiabetic drug acarbose. Matthiola incana has been demonstrated to exert different biological properties. These are important in order to consider this species as a source of bioactive compounds

Meassurement of magnetic susceptibility has allowed the assesment of the marine influence and diagenetic evolution of coastal sediments from the Rías Baixas. This is based on geographically and vertically distributed data. The lowfield susceptibility () of over 200 samples of surficial seabed sediments of the Rias of Vigo and Pontevedra showed a significant increase towards the open sea and away from continental influenced areas. Vertical variability of the susceptibility was evaluated in 80 samples obtained from three 60 to 90 cm long gravity corers in the Ria de Pontevedra. These samples showed a very strong decrease in susceptibility with depth. The surficial susceptibility values correlated well with the textural characteristics of the sediments, suggesting a link between sediment provenance and origin of the magnetic signal. To further evaluate these relationships, the available sedimentological data were completed with a number of elemental and mineralogical analysis. In addition some basic magnetic parameters were obtained for selected specimens. The combined analysis of these data showed that the spatial variability of the susceptibility observed in the different granulometric fractions can be spatially related to: (a) sediment provenance and origin, (b) hydrodynamic regime established between the Rias and the adjacent shelf, (c) antropogenic solid particulate pollution. It can also be concluded that the evolution of the magnetomineralogical phases during the early stages of burial and diagenesis is controlled by the organic matter content which in turn controls the redox potential

Proceedings of: Forth International Workshop on User-Centric Technologies and applications (CONTEXTS 2010). Valencia, 07-10 September , 2010.The current interest and extension of social networking are rapidly introducing a large number of applications that originate new communication and interaction forms among their users. Social networks and virtual worlds, thus represent a perfect environment for interacting with applications that use multimodal information and are able to adapt to the specific characteristics and preferences of each user. As an example of this application, in this paper we present an example of the integration of conversational agents in social networks, describing the development of a conversational avatar that provides academic information in the virtual world of Second Life. For its implementation techniques from Speech Technologies and Natural Language Processing have been used to allow a more natural interaction with the system using voice.Funded by projects CICYT TIN2008-06742-C02-02/TSI, CICYT TEC2008-06732-C02-02/TEC, SINPROB, CAM MADRINET S-0505/TIC/0255, and DPS2008-07029-C02-02.Publicad
