Social representations (SR) have always been a fundamental concept for psychology (Moscovici, 1973). This qualitative study uses the concept of SR, applied to the Health's field; the aim is to analyze the SR of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) for cancer in students of Health Sciences, using the methodology of thematic analysis. Results indicate that the SR of CAM have been developed based on many different elements, but where prevails an objectification and anchoring of CAM on what is common and familiar, rather than based on scientific knowledge. This to reflect on the training of future professionals and their practices in curing cancer. © 2018 Pontificia Universidad Javeriana.Las representaciones sociales (RS) han sido desde siempre un concepto fundamental para la psicología (Moscovici, 1973). The Minimal Supersymmetric Fat Higgs Model

    Get PDF
We present a calculable supersymmetric theory of a composite ``fat'' Higgs boson. Electroweak symmetry is broken dynamically through a new gauge interaction that becomes strong at an intermediate scale. The Higgs mass can easily be 200-450 GeV along with the superpartner masses, solving the supersymmetric little hierarchy problem. We explicitly verify that the model is consistent with precision electroweak data without fine-tuning. Gauge coupling unification can be maintained despite the inherently strong dynamics involved in electroweak symmetry breaking. Supersymmetrizing the Standard Model therefore does not imply a light Higgs mass, contrary to the lore in the literature. The Higgs sector of the minimal Fat Higgs model has a mass spectrum that is distinctly different from the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, REVTe

Martin, JS (San Martin, Jose). Univ Talca, Inst Biol Vegetal & Biotecnol, Talca, ChileAraucaria forests (Araucaria araucana) have a tremendous ecological relevance; however, the information concerning their spatial distribution is still insufficient. They have only been classified according to small management scales, using satellite photos and images processed through conventional methods. The present study had as its objective to discriminate and characterize types of A. araucana forests in the Conguillio National Park, located in the Southern-Center Chile, through data derived from the Landsat-5 TM satellite and geographic information systems. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was satisfactorily related with variables corresponding to crown coverage and the diameter at breast height; thus, these index values were incorporated to the classification process. Using the digital elevation model and the NDVI, the effect provoked by the shadow was minimized. Seven types of forests, between dense and semi-dense-open, were discriminated in accordance with the accompanying species. The global reliability of the classification was 83.8 %. The greatest reliability for the producer was for the medium crown density forest of A. araucana - N. dombeyi (B1) (87.5 %); and for the consumer, for the high crown density forests of A. araucana - N. dombeyi (B1) and also for those of medium density (B2) (93 %). It is concluded that incorporating NDVI values and data derived from the digital elevation model to the satellite classification process, it is possible to discriminate araucaria forests with satisfactory reliability in areas of rough relief, which is very useful information for the management of these forestry ecosystems

Casting Fe-Al-based intermetallics microalloyed with Li and Ag

The effect on the mechanical properties at room temperature of Li and Ag additions to the Fe–Al (40 at.%)-based alloy produced by conventional casting were evaluated in this work. Alloying elements were added into a previously molted Fe–(40 at.%) aluminum-based alloy, stirred, and then cast into sand molds to directly produce tensile specimens. To determine the mechanical properties, tensile tests and hardness measurements were performed. The additions of both Ag and Li showed an increase in ductility and tensile strength of the intermetallic alloys. In addition, hardness was substantially increased with the Li addition. Lithium additions promoted a solid solution hardening, whereas 3 at.% of Ag additions promoted ductility due to a microstructural modification and to the formation of a soft Ag 3 Al phase. Characterization by both optical and electronic microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy microanalysis, and x-ray diffraction supported the mechanical characterization.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Recombinant nodavirus vaccine produced in bacteria and administered without purification elicits humoral immunity and protects European sea bass against infection

Viral necrosis virus (NNV) or nodavirus causes fish viral encephalopathy and retinopathy worldwide. In some cases, mortalities in aquaculture industry can reach up to 100%, some species being especially sensitive as is the case of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), one of the main cultured species in the Mediterranean, with the consequent economical loses. Development of new vaccines against NNV is in the spotlight though few re- searches have focused in European sea bass. In this study we have generated a recombinant NNV (rNNV) vaccine produced in Escherichia coli expressing the capsid protein and administered it to European sea bass juveniles by two different routes (intraperitoneal and oral). The last being considered non-stressful and desired for fish farming of small fish, which in fact are the most affected by NNV. Oral vaccine was composed of feed pellets containing the recombinant whole bacteria, and injected vaccine was composed of recombinant bacteria pre- viously lysed. Our results revealed production of specific anti-NNV IgM following the two vaccination proce- dures, levels that were further increased in orally-vaccinated group after challenge with NNV. Genes related to interferon (IFN), T-cell and immunoglobulin markers were scarcely regulated in head-kidney (HK), gut or brain. Vaccination by either route elicited a relative survival response of 100% after NNV challenge. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a recombinant vaccine followed by no purification steps which resulted in a complete protection in European sea bass when challenged with NNV.Versión del edito

Determination and analysis of plasma radiative properties for numerical simulations of laboratory radiative blast waves launched in xenon clusters

Radiative shock waves play a pivotal role in the transport energy into the stellar medium. This fact has led to many efforts to scale the astrophysical phenomena to accessible laboratory conditions and their study has been highlighted as an area requiring further experimental investigations. Low density material with high atomic mass is suitable to achieve radiative regime, and, therefore, low density xenon plasmas are commonly used for the medium in which the radiative shocks propagate. The knowledge of the plasma radiative properties is crucial for the correct understanding and for the hydrodynamic simulations of radiative shocks. In this work, we perform an analysis of the radiative properties of xenon plasmas in a range of matter densities and electron temperatures typically found in laboratory experiments of radiative shocks launched in xenon plasmas. Furthermore, for a particular experiment, our analysis is applied to make a diagnostics of the electron temperatures of the radiative shocks since they could not be experimentally measure

Parametrization of the average ionization and radiative cooling rates of carbon plasmas in a wide range of density and temperature

In this work we present an analysis of the influence of the thermodynamic regime on the monochromatic emissivity, the radiative power loss and the radiative cooling rate for optically thin carbon plasmas over a wide range of electron temperature and density assuming steady state situations. Furthermore, we propose analytical expressions depending on the electron density and temperature for the average ionization and cooling rate based on polynomial fittings which are valid for the whole range of plasma conditions considered in this work
