    Overview of PAN 2018. Author identification, author profiling, and author obfuscation

    [EN] PAN 2018 explores several authorship analysis tasks enabling a systematic comparison of competitive approaches and advancing research in digital text forensics.More specifically, this edition of PAN introduces a shared task in cross-domain authorship attribution, where texts of known and unknown authorship belong to distinct domains, and another task in style change detection that distinguishes between single author and multi-author texts. In addition, a shared task in multimodal author profiling examines, for the first time, a combination of information from both texts and images posted by social media users to estimate their gender. Finally, the author obfuscation task studies how a text by a certain author can be paraphrased so that existing author identification tools are confused and cannot recognize the similarity with other texts of the same author. New corpora have been built to support these shared tasks. A relatively large number of software submissions (41 in total) was received and evaluated.     Overview of PAN'17: Author Identification, Author Profiling, and Author Obfuscation

    [EN] The PAN 2017 shared tasks on digital text forensics were held in conjunction with the annual CLEF conference. This paper gives a high-level overview of each of the three shared tasks organized this year, namely author identification, author profiling, and author obfuscation. For each task, we give a brief summary of the evaluation data, performance measures, and results obtained. Altogether, 29 participants submitted a total of 33 pieces of software for evaluation, whereas 4 participants submitted to more than one task.     This study investigated the long-term effects of total and partial replacement of dietary fish meal (FM) by a mixture of agricultural products on sperm quality of African catfish Clarias gariepinus. Four isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets were formulated containing graded levels of either 50% FM and maize meal (diet 1); 25% FM mixed with crude sunflower oil cake (SFOC) and bean meal (BM) (diet 2); 12.5% FM mixed with sunflower oil cake, BM and ground nut oil cake (GOC) (diet 3) and 0% FM mixed with de-hulled sunflower oil cake (SFOCD), BM and ground nut oil cake (diet 4). Gonadosomatic index (GSI), sperm quality, plasma sex steroids (11-keto testosterone [11-KT]; testosterone [T]; estradiol-17beta [E2]) were evaluated on 10 to 24 fish fed on each diet. Sperm quality was assessed using computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA). Total replacement of fish meal by plant products markedly increased sperm volume, spermatocrit, spermatozoa integrity, and sperm motility. Fish fed diet 3 (12.5% fish meal) provided intermediate results on sperm quality whereas the lowest values were obtained in fish fed diets 1 and 2. In fish fed 0% fish meal (diet 4), androgen levels were higher and estrogen levels were lower than in fish fed fish meal diets. Based on dietary lipid and fatty acid analyses, these results suggest a positive impact of short chain n-6 fatty acids on androgen synthesis and sperm quality. In conclusion, a combination of ground nut oil cake, bean meal and sunflower oil cake (preferably when the sunflower is dehulled) in African catfish diet improves the sperm quality

    Langevin Equation for the Rayleigh model with finite-ranged interactions

    Both linear and nonlinear Langevin equations are derived directly from the Liouville equation for an exactly solvable model consisting of a Brownian particle of mass MM interacting with ideal gas molecules of mass mm via a quadratic repulsive potential. Explicit microscopic expressions for all kinetic coefficients appearing in these equations are presented. It is shown that the range of applicability of the Langevin equation, as well as statistical properties of random force, may depend not only on the mass ratio m/Mm/M but also by the parameter Nm/MNm/M, involving the average number NN of molecules in the interaction zone around the particle. For the case of a short-ranged potential, when N1N\ll 1, analysis of the Langevin equations yields previously obtained results for a hard-wall potential in which only binary collisions are considered. For the finite-ranged potential, when multiple collisions are important (N1N\gg 1), the model describes nontrivial dynamics on time scales that are on the order of the collision time, a regime that is usually beyond the scope of more phenomenological models.Comment: 21 pages, 1 figure.     Designing User-Friendly Grids for the Gender-Specification of Rural, Semi-Urban, and Urban School Toilets in West Africa: Lessons from the Republic of Benin

    Gender equity, quality education, and sanitation in rural and urban areas are widely considered as development imperatives. However, while many countries of the world are already far with the gendering of their schools’ toilets, most others still tend to systematically construct the same number of toilet cabins for female and male students, often ignoring specific needs associated with biophysical differences and disabilities among the students. This poor gendering of school toilets prevailed in the Republic of Benin until 2013, when, within the framework of the Pluriannual Water and Sanitation Programme (PPEA phase 2) funded by the Netherlands’ Ministry of Cooperation through its Embassy in the Republic of Benin, the Directorate of Hygiene and Sanitation of the Ministry of Public Health in collaboration with Water and Sanitation for Africa Agency, decided to launch a study for gender and disability specific toilets in primary and secondary schools. This original paper discusses the process towards the design of norms and grids for the calculation of toilet cabins and urinals needs of primary and secondary school students of rural, semi-urban, urban, Sahelian, Sudanian, lake, and coastal areas of the Republic of Benin. The study took place in four steps. The first step consisted of identifying key factors that affect the use of school toilets by students, especially female and disabled students. The second step consisted of observing and recording the use of school toilets by students, and building on those observations and records to estimate the number of toilet cabins and urinals required per agroecological and sociocultural area. The third step built on the results from the first and second steps to design simplified grids that allow sanitation and schools’ decision-makers to easily and quickly calculate the number of toilet cabins and urinals required for the target schools, per gender and disability. The fourth step consisted of building the capacities of potential users of the grids, for their relevant use. The findings indicate a variation of needs among primary and secondary schools, and the study zones, due to sociocultural and development differences. The grids have been in use in Benin since 2016 and it has easily helped to calculate gender-specific toilet needs in the study areas. After five years of use, their performance requires to be assessed for further adaptations. A further paper will report on the performance of these grids

    The piston problem is investigated in the case where the length of the cylinder is infinite (on both sides) and the ratio m/Mm/M is a very small parameter, where mm is the mass of one particle of the gaz and MM is the mass of the piston. Introducing initial conditions such that the stochastic motion of the piston remains in the average at the origin (no drift), it is shown that the time evolution of the fluids, analytically derived from Liouville equation, agrees with the Second Law of thermodynamics.     Histopathological disturbances in two fish species Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus 1758) and Labeo barbus pellegrini (Bertin et Estève 1948) from downstream mining sites in the upper Ulindi and Elila river basins, Eastern DR Congo

    peer reviewedThe effect of intensive mining on the health status of fish living in the upper basins of the Ulindi and Elila rivers was investigated between June 2018 and March 2022 by comparing the reproductive, hepatic and gill systems of fish collected from sites upstream and downstream of the mining sites. Biometric indices and organ histopathology are biomarkers that were studied at two different trophic levels using two fish species Oreochromis niloticus and Labeobarbus pellegreni. Histological evaluation was performed on the liver, gonads and gills of both species. Water and sediment samples were analysed for total mercury (T-Hg) concentration by (atomic absorption spectrophotometry). Histological changes were assessed semi-quantitatively, and the results were graded according to the severity of the histological responses. The results showed that L. pellegrini accumulated more T-Hg than O. niloticus. The T-Hg level was higher in the organs of both species during the rainy season than during the dry season in the following order: Gonads > Liver > Gills and exceeded the WHO/FAO recommended limit (T-Hg = 1.0 mg/kg wet weight) only in the testes and gills of L. pellegrini collected at the downstream sites of the Ulindi and Elila rivers. This does not necessarily reflect the level in the carcass. Taken together, the results suggest that mercury accumulated downstream of gold mining operations is altering the health of fish populations and that L. pellegrini can be considered a sentinel species for monitoring this pollution.     Kinetic analysis of N-alkylaryl carboxamide hexitol nucleotides as substrates for evolved polymerases

    Six 1′,5′-anhydrohexitol uridine triphosphates were synthesized with aromatic substitutions appended via a carboxamide linker to the 5-position of their bases. An improved method for obtaining such 5-substituted hexitol nucleosides and nucleotides is described. The incorporation profile of the nucleotide analogues into a DNA duplex overhang using recently evolved XNA polymerases is compared. Long, mixed HNA sequences featuring the base modifications are generated. The apparent binding affinity of four of the nucleotides to the enzyme, the rate of the chemical step and of product release, plus the specificity constant for the incorporation of these modified nucleotides into a DNA duplex overhang using the HNA polymerase T6G12_I521L are determined via pre-steady-state kinetics. HNA polymers displaying aromatic functional groups could have significant impact on the isolation of stable and high-affinity binders and catalysts, or on the design of nanomaterials
