Environmental Impacts of Tartaric Stabilisation Processes for Wines using Electrodialysis and Cold Treatment
The environmental impacts of the two tartaric stabilisation methods used for wines, electrodialysis andcold treatment, were studied by determining water consumption (for the process and cleaning), wasteproduced (organic load and the composition of wastewater and residues) and energy consumption, atthe pilot stage and in wineries. Thanks to an online treatment of electrodialysis brines by reverse osmosis(industrial facility that treats 30 hL wine/h), the recycling of permeates led to a 65% reduction in waterconsumption, the volume of which represented only 3.9% of the wine treated. When washing and cleaningwater from the ED-RO system was taken into account, overall water consumption was 5.5 L/hL wine. Thepresence of ethanol, due to an osmotic phenomenon with no loss of wine volume, and tartaric acid in thebrines contributes to the organic load of the brine, with a COD of close to 8.4 g O2/L. Overall electricalenergy consumption for stabilisation by electrodialysis (0.21 kWh/hL) turned out to be eight times lowerthan that of cold stabilisation. An evaluation of cold stabilisation effluents revealed that 66.6% of the CODdischarged came from the diatomaceous earth (DE), 21.8% from the washing of the filter and 11.4% fromthe washing of the cold treatment tank. The production of used DE was 2.64 g (wet weight)/L of wine, andthe ethanol present in the DE waste represented a loss in wine volume of 0.14 L/hL
Phase-field approach to polycrystalline solidification including heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation
Advanced phase-field techniques have been applied to address various aspects of polycrystalline solidification including different modes of crystal nucleation. The height of the nucleation barrier has been determined by solving the appropriate Euler-Lagrange equations. The examples shown include the comparison of various models of homogeneous crystal nucleation with atomistic simulations for the single component hard-sphere fluid. Extending previous work for pure systems (Gránásy L, Pusztai T, Saylor D and Warren J A 2007 Phys. Rev. Lett. 98 art no 035703), heterogeneous nucleation in unary and binary systems is described via introducing boundary conditions that realize the desired contact angle. A quaternion representation of crystallographic orientation of the individual particles (outlined in Pusztai T, Bortel G and Gránásy L 2005 Europhys. Lett. 71 131) has been applied for modeling a broad variety of polycrystalline structures including crystal sheaves, spherulites and those built of crystals with dendritic, cubic, rhombododecahedral, truncated octahedral growth morphologies. Regular dendritic patterns induced by non-local time-periodic forcing
The dynamic response of dendritic solidification to spatially homogeneous
time-periodic forcing has been studied. Phase-field calculations performed in
two dimensions (2D) and experiments on thin (quasi 2D) liquid crystal layers
show that the frequency of dendritic side-branching can be tuned by oscillatory
pressure or heating. The sensitivity of this phenomenon to the relevant
parameters, the frequency and amplitude of the modulation, the initial
undercooling and the anisotropies of the interfacial free energy and molecule
attachment kinetics, has been explored. It has been demonstrated that besides
the side-branching mode synchronous with external forcing as emerging from the
linear Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin analysis, modes that oscillate with higher

One Net Fits All: A unifying semantics of Dynamic Fault Trees using GSPNs
Dynamic Fault Trees (DFTs) are a prominent model in reliability engineering.
They are strictly more expressive than static fault trees, but this comes at a
price: their interpretation is non-trivial and leaves quite some freedom. This
paper presents a GSPN semantics for DFTs. This semantics is rather simple and
compositional. The key feature is that this GSPN semantics unifies all existing
DFT semantics from the literature. All semantic variants can be obtained by

Hemispheric Specialization in Dogs for Processing Different Acoustic Stimuli
Considerable experimental evidence shows that functional cerebral asymmetries are widespread in animals. Activity of the right cerebral hemisphere has been associated with responses to novel stimuli and the expression of intense emotions, such as aggression, escape behaviour and fear. The left hemisphere uses learned patterns and responds to familiar stimuli. Although such lateralization has been studied mainly for visual responses, there is evidence in primates that auditory perception is lateralized and that vocal communication depends on differential processing by the hemispheres. The aim of the present work was to investigate whether dogs use different hemispheres to process different acoustic stimuli by presenting them with playbacks of a thunderstorm and their species-typical vocalizations. The results revealed that dogs usually process their species-typical vocalizations using the left hemisphere and the thunderstorm sounds using the right hemisphere. Nevertheless, conspecific vocalizations are not always processed by the left hemisphere, since the right hemisphere is used for processing vocalizations when they elicit intense emotion, including fear. These findings suggest that the specialisation of the left hemisphere for intraspecific communication is more ancient that previously thought, and so is specialisation of the right hemisphere for intense emotions
Mother-offspring recognition via contact calls in cattle, Bos taurus.
Individual recognition in gregarious species is fundamental in order to avoid misdirected parental investment. In ungulates, two very different parental care strategies have been identified: ‘hider’ offspring usually lie concealed in vegetation whereas offspring of ‘follower’ species remain with their mothers while they forage. These two strategies have been suggested to impact on mother-offspring vocal recognition, with unidirectional recognition of the mother by offspring occurring in hiders and bidirectional recognition in followers. In domestic cattle, Bos taurus, a facultative hider species, vocal communication and recognition have not been studied in detail under free-ranging conditions, where cows and calves can graze freely and where hiding behaviour can occur. We hypothesized that, as a hider species, cattle under these circumstances would display unidirectional vocal recognition. To test this hypothesis, we conducted playback experiments using mother-offspring contact calls. We found that cows were more likely to respond, by moving their ears and/or looking, turning or walking towards the loudspeaker, to calls of their own calves than to calls from other calves. Similarly, calves responded more rapidly, and were more likely to move their ears and/or look, turn or walk towards the loudspeaker, and to call back and/or meet their mothers, in response to calls from their own mothers than to calls from other females. Contrary to our predictions, our results suggest that mother-offspring vocal individual recognition is bidirectional in cattle. Additionally, mothers of younger calves tended to respond more strongly to playbacks than mothers of older calves. Therefore, mother responses to calf vocalizations are at least partially influenced by calf age
γ-Tubulin 2 Nucleates Microtubules and Is Downregulated in Mouse Early Embryogenesis
γ-Tubulin is the key protein for microtubule nucleation. Duplication of the γ-tubulin gene occurred several times during evolution, and in mammals γ-tubulin genes encode proteins which share ∼97% sequence identity. Previous analysis of Tubg1 and Tubg2 knock-out mice has suggested that γ-tubulins are not functionally equivalent. Tubg1 knock-out mice died at the blastocyst stage, whereas Tubg2 knock-out mice developed normally and were fertile. It was proposed that γ-tubulin 1 represents ubiquitous γ-tubulin, while γ-tubulin 2 may have some specific functions and cannot substitute for γ-tubulin 1 deficiency in blastocysts. The molecular basis of the suggested functional difference between γ-tubulins remains unknown. Here we show that exogenous γ-tubulin 2 is targeted to centrosomes and interacts with γ-tubulin complex proteins 2 and 4. Depletion of γ-tubulin 1 by RNAi in U2OS cells causes impaired microtubule nucleation and metaphase arrest. Wild-type phenotype in γ-tubulin 1-depleted cells is restored by expression of exogenous mouse or human γ-tubulin 2. Further, we show at both mRNA and protein levels using RT-qPCR and 2D-PAGE, respectively, that in contrast to Tubg1, the Tubg2 expression is dramatically reduced in mouse blastocysts. This indicates that γ-tubulin 2 cannot rescue γ-tubulin 1 deficiency in knock-out blastocysts, owing to its very low amount. The combined data suggest that γ-tubulin 2 is able to nucleate microtubules and substitute for γ-tubulin 1. We propose that mammalian γ-tubulins are functionally redundant with respect to the nucleation activity
Rapid Sampling of Molecules via Skin for Diagnostic and Forensic Applications
Skin provides an excellent portal for diagnostic monitoring of a variety of entities; however, there is a dearth of reliable methods for patient-friendly sampling of skin constituents. This study describes the use of low-frequency ultrasound as a one-step methodology for rapid sampling of molecules from the skin.
Sampling was performed using a brief exposure of 20 kHz ultrasound to skin in the presence of a sampling fluid. In vitro sampling from porcine skin was performed to assess the effectiveness of the method and its ability to sample drugs and endogenous epidermal biomolecules from the skin. Dermal presence of an antifungal drug—fluconazole and an abused substance, cocaine—was assessed in rats.
Ultrasonic sampling captured the native profile of various naturally occurring moisturizing factors in skin. A high sampling efficiency (79 ± 13%) of topically delivered drug was achieved. Ultrasound consistently sampled greater amounts of drug from the skin compared to tape stripping. Ultrasonic sampling also detected sustained presence of cocaine in rat skin for up to 7 days as compared to its rapid disappearance from the urine.

Characterization and social correlates of fecal testosterone and cortisol excretion in wild male Saguinus mystax
Reproductive success in male primates can be influenced by testosterone (T) and cortisol (C). We examined them in wild Saguinus mystax via fecal hormone analysis. Firstly, we wanted to characterize male hormonal status over the course of the year. Further we tested the influence of the reproductive status of the breeding female, social instability, and intergroup encounter rates on T levels, comparing the results with predictions of the challenge hypothesis (Wingfield et al., 1990). We also tested for interindividual differences in hormonal levels, possibly related to social or breeding status. We collected data during a 12-mo study on 2 groups of moustached tamarins at the Estación Biológica Quebrada Blanco in northeastern Peru. We found fairly similar T and C levels over the course of the year for all males. Yet an elevation of T shortly after the birth of infants, during the phase of ovarian inactivity of the group’s breeding female, was evident. Hormonal levels were not significantly elevated during a phase of social instability, did not correlate with intergroup encounter rates, and did not differ between breeding and nonbreeding males. Our results confirm the challenge hypothesis (Wingfield et al., 1990).
