    Magneto-optical determination of the electron-solid phase-boundary

    We have obtained a two-dimensional electron-solid phase diagram in the extreme magnetic quantum limit by studying the temperature dependence of the radiative recombination of electrons in a GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs heterojunction with holes bound to a delta-layer, 250 A away in the GaAs, of Be acceptors. The low-energy shoulder to the luminescence line, indicating the presence of the electron solid, is seen to disappear at a filling-factor-dependent critical temperature. We observe no shoulder above a filling factor of 0.25, and the critical temperature falls to below 0.4 K at filling factors 1/5 and 1/7

    Quantum Hall induced currents and the magnetoresistance of a quantum point contact

    We report an investigation of quantum Hall induced currents by simultaneous measurements of their magnetic moment and their effect on the conductance of a quantum point contact (QPC). Features in the magnetic moment and QPC resistance are correlated at Landau-level filling factors nu=1, 2 and 4, which demonstrates the common origin of the effects. Temperature and non-linear sweep rate dependences are observed to be similar for the two effects. Furthermore, features in the noise of the induced currents, caused by breakdown of the quantum Hall effect, are observed to have clear correlations between the two measurements. In contrast, there is a distinct difference in the way that the induced currents decay with time when the sweeping field halts at integer filling factor. We attribute this difference to the fact that, while both effects are sensitive to the magnitude of the induced current, the QPC resistance is also sensitive to the proximity of the current to the QPC split-gate. Although it is clearly demonstrated that induced currents affect the electrostatics of a QPC, the reverse effect, the QPC influencing the induced current, was not observed

    The influence of the long-lived quantum Hall potential on the characteristics of quantum devices

    Novel hysteretic effects are reported in magneto-transport experiments on lateral quantum devices. The effects are characterized by two vastly different relaxation times (minutes and days). It is shown that the observed phenomena are related to long-lived eddy currents. This is confirmed by torsion-balance magnetometry measurements of the same 2-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) material. These observations show that the induced quantum Hall potential at the edges of the 2DEG reservoirs influences transport through the devices, and have important consequences for the magneto-transport of all lateral quantum devices.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Structure and play: rethinking regulation in the higher education sector

    This paper explores possible tactics for academics working within a context of increasing regulation and constraint. One suggested tactic is to move outside of a creativity-conformity binary. Rather than understanding creativity and conformity as separable, where one is seen as excluding the other, the authors consider the potential of examining the relationships between them. The theme of 'structure and play' illustrates the argument. In the first part of the paper, using various examples from art and design - fields generally associated with creativity - the authors explore the interrelatedness of creativity and conformity. For example, how might design styles, which are generally understood as creative outcomes, constrain creativity and lead to conformity within the design field? Is fashion producing creativity or conformity? Conversely, the ways in which conformity provides the conditions for creativity are also examined. For example, the conformity imposed by the state on artists in the former communist bloc contributed to a thriving underground arts movement which challenged conformity and state regulation. Continuing the theme of 'structure and play', the authors recount a story from an Australian university which foregrounds the ongoing renegotiation of power relations in the academy. This account illustrates how programmatic government in a university, with its aim of regulating conduct, can contribute to unanticipated outcomes. The authors propose that a Foucauldian view of distributed power is useful for academics operating in a context of increasing regulation, as it brings into view sites where power might begin to be renegotiated

    Living with multiple losses: Insights from patients living with pressure injury

Its prevention and treatment is predominantly focussed on views, perceptions and knowledge of healthcare staff rather than on patient experience, particularly those patients living in their own homes. Aim: This paper reports findings on patients experiences and perceptions of loss associated with PI. These findings are drawn from a larger study of pressure injury patients living and receiving care in the community. Methods: Qualitative interviews with 12 participants with pressure injury and five carers. Data was audio recorded and thematically analysed. The study is reported in accordance with the COREQ guidelines. Findings: Having a pressure injury negatively affected many aspects of life for our participants resulting in multiple losses. These losses included loss of mobility and independence, privacy and dignity, and social engagement and ability to engage in preferred activities. Discussion: Although the effects of a pressure injury may be similar for many people, the most important issues will differ from person-to-person thus treatment and prevention of pressure injury requires a multidisciplinary team having a holistic care approach. Some patients’ pressure injury will never heal and it is increasingly important to involve the patient to find out what matters most to them and how their wound is impacting on them, to jointly develop a holistic, person-centred plan. Conclusion: Policy and practice should recognise and reflect that patients living with a pressure injury at home have different challenges and needs to those in acute or long term care. Pragmatic solutions in the delivery of pressure injury care are needed to compliment the drive to move healthcare from the hospital-to-home

    Photometric characterization of multiple populations in star clusters: The impact of the first dredge-up

    The existence of star-to-star light-element abundance variations (multiple populations, MPs) in massive Galactic and extragalactic star clusters older than about 2 Gyr is by now well established. Photometry of red giant branch (RGB) stars has been and still is instrumental in enabling the detection and characterization of cluster MPs, through the appropriate choices of filters, colours and colour combinations, that are mainly sensitive to N and --to a lesser degree-- C stellar surface abundances. An important issue not yet properly addressed is that the translation of the observed widths of the cluster RGBs to abundance spreads must account for the effect of the first dredge-up on the surface chemical patterns, hence on the spectral energy distributions of stars belonging to the various MPs. We have filled this gap by studying theoretically the impact of the dredge-up on the predicted widths of RGBs in clusters hosting MPs. We find that for a given initial range of N abundances, the first dredge up reduces the predicted RGB widths in N-sensitive filters compared to the case when its effect on the stellar spectral energy distributions is not accounted for. This reduction is a strong function of age and has also a dependence on metallicity. The net effect is an underestimate of the initial N-abundance ranges from RGB photometry if the first dredge-up is not accounted for in the modelling, and also the potential determination of spurious trends of N-abundance spreads with age

    Tuning gaps and phases of a two-subband system in a quantizing magnetic field

    In this work we study the properties of a two-subband quasi-two-dimensional electron system in a strong magnetic field when the electron filling factor is equal to four. When the cyclotron energy is close to the intersubband splitting the system can be mapped onto a four-level electron system with an effective filling factor of two. The ground state is either a ferromagnetic state or a spin-singlet state, depending on the values of the inter-level splitting and Zeeman energy. The boundaries between these phases are strongly influenced by the inter-electron interaction. A significant exchange-mediated enhancement of the excitation gap results in the suppression of the electron-phonon interaction. The rate of absorption of non-equilibrium phonons is calculated as a function of Zeeman energy and inter-subband splitting. The phonon absorption rate has two peaks as a function of intersubband splitting and has a step-like structure as a function of Zeeman energy

    Magneto-electrical subbands of freely suspended quantum point contacts

    We present a versatile design of freely suspended quantum point contacts with particular large one-dimensional subband quantization energies of up to 10meV. The nanoscale bridges embedding a two-dimensional electron system are fabricated from AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructures by electron-beam lithography and etching techniques. Narrow constrictions define quantum point contacts that are capacitively controlled via local in-plane side gates. Employing transport spectroscopy, we investigate the transition from electrostatic subbands to Landau-quantization in a perpendicular magnetic field. The large subband quantization energies allow us to utilize a wide magnetic field range and thereby observe a large exchange splitted spin-gap of the two lowest Landau-levels

    Risk prediction models for colorectal cancer in people with symptoms: a systematic review

    Abstract Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death in Europe and the United States. Detecting the disease at an early stage improves outcomes. Risk prediction models which combine multiple risk factors and symptoms have the potential to improve timely diagnosis. The aim of this review is to systematically identify and compare the performance of models that predict the risk of primary CRC among symptomatic individuals. Methods We searched Medline and EMBASE to identify primary research studies reporting, validating or assessing the impact of models. For inclusion, models needed to assess a combination of risk factors that included symptoms, present data on model performance, and be applicable to the general population. Screening of studies for inclusion and data extraction were completed independently by at least two researchers. Results Twelve thousand eight hundred eight papers were identified from the literature search and three through citation searching. 18 papers describing 15 risk models were included. Nine were developed in primary care populations and six in secondary care. Four had good discrimination (AUROC > 0.8) in external validation studies, and sensitivity and specificity ranged from 0.25 and 0.99 to 0.99 and 0.46 depending on the cut-off chosen. Conclusions Models with good discrimination have been developed in both primary and secondary care populations. Most contain variables that are easily obtainable in a single consultation, but further research is needed to assess clinical utility before they are incorporated into practice

    Exchange interaction effects in inter-Landau level Auger scattering in a two-dimensional electron gas

    We consider the influence of spin effects on the inter-Landau level electron-electron scattering rate in a two-dimensional electron gas. Due to the exchange spin splitting, the Landau levels are not equidistant. This leads to the suppresion of Auger processes and a nonlinear dependence of the lifetime on the concentration of the excited electrons even at very low excitation levels.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
