    Optical diffraction radiation for position monitoring of charged particle beams

    In the framework of the future linear collider collaboration (CLIC, ILC), non-intercepting beam monitoring instruments are under development for very low emittance and high charge density beams. Optical diffraction radiation (ODR) was studied and developed during the last years focussing on beam size measurements. We propose in the paper to consider the use of diffraction radiation for ultra relativistic beams as position monitors with applications for the centering of scrapers, collimators and targets with high resolution. We present the experimental results obtained using small aperture slits on the ATF2 extraction beam line at KEK and on the Cornell Electron Storage Ring with 1.2 GeV and 2.1 GeV electrons respectively

    First Results of the EDELWEISS WIMP Search using a 320 g Heat-and-Ionization Ge Detector

    The EDELWEISS collaboration has performed a direct search for WIMP dark matter using a 320 g heat-and-ionization cryogenic Ge detector operated in a low-background environment in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane. No nuclear recoils are observed in the fiducial volume in the 30-200 keV energy range during an effective exposure of 4.53 kg.days. Limits for the cross-section for the spin-independent interaction of WIMPs and nucleons are set in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The central value of the signal reported by the experiment DAMA is excluded at 90% CL.Comment: 14 pages, Latex, 4 figures. Submitted to Phys. Lett.

    Event categories in the EDELWEISS WIMP search experiment

    Four categories of events have been identified in the EDELWEISS-I dark matter experiment using germanium cryogenic detectors measuring simultaneously charge and heat signals. These categories of events are interpreted as electron and nuclear interactions occurring in the volume of the detector, and electron and nuclear interactions occurring close to the surface of the detectors(10-20 mu-m of the surface). We discuss the hypothesis that low energy surface nuclear recoils,which seem to have been unnoticed by previous WIMP searches, may provide an interpretation of the anomalous events recorded by the UKDMC and Saclay NaI experiments. The present analysis points to the necessity of taking into account surface nuclear and electron recoil interactions for a reliable estimate of background rejection factors.Comment: 11 pages, submitted to Phys.     SUSY spectrum constraints on direct dark matter detection

    We perform an investigation of the MSSM parameter space at the Fermi scale taking into account available accelerator, non-accelerator and cosmological constraints. Extra assumptions about upper bounds for some of the SUSY particles are also imposed. We show that a non-observation of the SUSY dark matter candidates with a high-accuracy dark matter detector, such as Ge-73, under above-mentioned assumptions can exclude large domains of the MSSM parameter space and, for instance, can make especially desirable collider search for light SUSY charged Higgs boson.Comment: latex, 13 pages, 6 figures, modified version to be published in Phys.     Constraints on the pMSSM from searches for squarks and gluinos by ATLAS

    We study the impact of the jets and missing transverse momentum SUSY analyses of the ATLAS experiment on the phenomenological MSSM (pMSSM). We investigate sets of SUSY models with a flat and logarithmic prior in the SUSY mass scale and a mass range up to 1 and 3 TeV, respectively. These models were found previously in the study 'Supersymmetry without Prejudice'. Removing models with long-lived SUSY particles, we show that 99% of 20000 randomly generated pMSSM model points with a flat prior and 87% for a logarithmic prior are excluded by the ATLAS results. For models with squarks and gluinos below 600 GeV all models of the pMSSM grid are excluded. We identify SUSY spectra where the current ATLAS search strategy is less sensitive and propose extensions to the inclusive jets search channel
