    A comparative study of the dry and wet nano-scale electro-machining

    In recent years, a nano-electromachining (nano-EM) process based on a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) platform has been demonstrated. Nano-EM is capable of machining nano-features, under both, liquid dielectric (wet nano-EM) and air dielectric (dry nano-EM) media. The objective of this paper is to present a comparative study between the wet and dry nano-EM processes based on process mechanism, machining performance, consistency and dimensional repeatability of these two processes. The comparison of the two processes has been conducted at near field nano-EM, where the gap between the tool electrode and workpiece is 2 nm and the machining is performed at room temperature and pressure (macroscopically). The major differences in the process mechanism are due to the media at dielectric interface, the breakdown field strength and breakdown characteristics of two dielectrics and therefore, the material removal mechanism. It is reported that the material removal mechanism of wet nano-EM is associated with field emission-assisted avalanche in nano-confined liquid dielectric, whereas, the material removal mechanism in dry nano-EM is associated with field-induced evaporation of material. The differences have also been observed in the machining performance, dimensions of the machined features and repeatability of the nanoscale machined features. The self-tip-sharpening process with the continuation of machining has added several advantages to dry nano-EM over wet nano-EM in terms of dimensions of the nanoscale features, repeatability and machining performance

    Shape descriptors and statistical classification on areal topography data for tile inspection in tessellated surfaces

    Verification of conformance to design specifications in production, and identification of defects related to wear or other damage during maintenance, are key metrological aspects that must be addressed for micro-scale tessellated surfaces. A new algorithmic approach is presented that operates on topography datasets as obtained by areal topography instruments. The approach combines segmentation algorithms with a novel implementation of the angular radial transform, originally adopted by the MPEG-7 standard, to implement shape descriptors and associated similarity metrics. Applications to the inspection and verification of laser-manufactured micro-embossing topographies are illustrated. The topographies are first segmented to extract the individual tiles; the tiles are then encoded through shape descriptors. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis are used to investigate the behaviour of the angular radial transform coefficients. Finally, an algorithmic classifier based on supervised learning (k-nearest neighbours) is implemented and shown to be effective at identifying defects and at discriminating between defect types

    Translation and Bakhtin's "metalinguistics"

    This contribution applies a Bakhtinian perspective to Translation Studies, according to which the source-text gets represented in the target-text thanks to the dialogic relations that are created by translators in the process of translating. Translation is neither a complete rewriting nor a transparent mirroring of the source text, but an understanding that involves what Bakhtin calls "outsideness". By positioning themselves in this "outsideness", translators achieve the understanding that is a prerequisite for their task. We examine the role that Bakhtin's "metalinguistics" flow lays translators. Bakhtin's concern was with utterances, the basic speech units. We discuss discuss how a source text becomes an utterance and hence unrepeatable for translators. Using specific examples, we then illustrate the relevance of Bakhtinian "double-voiced words" - a metalinguistic category - for translators
