    The NKG2008 GPS campaign - final transformation results and a new common Nordic reference frame

    Abstract The NKG 2008 GPS campaign was carried out in September 28 – October 4, 2008. The purpose was to establish a common reference frame in the Nordic- Baltic-Arctic region, and to improve and update the transformations from the latest global ITRF reference frame to the national ETRS89 realizations of the Nordic/Baltic countries. Postglacial rebound in the Fennoscandian area causes intraplate deformations up to about 10 mm/yr to the Eurasian tectonic plate which need to be taken into account in order to reach centimetre level accuracies in the transformations. We discuss some possible alternatives and present the most applicable transformation strategy. The selected transformation utilizes the de facto transformation recommended by the EUREF but includes additional intraplate corrections and a new common Nordic-Baltic reference frame to serve the requirements of the Nordic/Baltic countries. To correct for the intraplate deformations in the Nordic-Baltic areawe have used the commonNordic deformation model NKG RF03vel. The new common reference frame, NKG ETRF00, was aligned to ETRF2000 at epoch 2000.0 in order to be close to the national ETRS89 realizations and to coincide with the land uplift epoch of the national height systems. We present here the realization of the NKG ETRF00 and transformation formulae together with the parameters to transform from global ITRF coordinates to Nordic/Baltic realizations of the ETRS89.</jats:p

    Yläkouluikäisten tyttöjen fyysinen aktiivisuus koulupäivän aikana

    Tiivistelmä. Kirjallisuuskatsauksena toteutetun tutkielmamme tarkoituksena oli tarkastella lasten ja nuorten fyysistä aktiivisuutta koulukontekstissa. Keskeisenä tavoitteena oli kuvata, miten fyysinen aktiivisuus muuttuu siirryttäessä alakoulusta yläkouluun, millainen on yläkouluikäisten tyttöjen fyysisen aktiivisuuden määrä koulupäivän aikana ja millaisia ovat sukupuolten väliset erot fyysisessä aktiivisuudessa. Lisäksi tehtävänä oli kuvata tyttöjen fyysisen aktiivisuuden erityispiirteitä. Koska useissa tutkimuksissa on todettu lasten ja nuorten fyysisen passiivisuuden lisääntyneen ja liikuntataitojen heikentyneen, aihe on ajankohtainen ja merkityksellinen. Fyysisen aktiivisuuden väheneminen on yhteydessä lisääntyneisiin terveysongelmiin ja aiheuttaa haasteita ja seurauksia niin oppilaalle itselleen kuin laajemmassa mittakaavassa koko yhteiskunnan tasollekin. Liikkuminen on myös erittäin tärkeää lasten ja nuorten terveen kasvun ja kehityksen kannalta. Ongelmaan puuttumisen kannalta etenkin koulu on merkittävässä roolissa, sillä se on paikka, joka tavoittaa kaikki ikäluokan lapset ja nuoret. Jotta negatiiviseen kehitykseen voidaan vaikuttaa koulussa, on tärkeää tuntea ne taustatekijät, jotka vaikuttavat yläkouluikäisten fyysiseen aktiivisuuteen. Tutkielmamme osoittaa, että fyysinen aktiivisuus laskee merkittävästi siirryttäessä alakoulusta yläkouluun. Syynä tähän on muun muassa liikkumisen merkitysten muuttuminen. Tutkielma osoittaa myös, että pojat ovat tyttöjä fyysisesti aktiivisempia niin vapaa-ajalla kuin koulupäivän aikanakin. Tämän vuoksi olisi tärkeää saada lisättyä koulupäivään fyysistä aktiivisuutta lisääviä toimia, jotka mahdollistaisivat lisää liikkumisen mahdollisuuksia erityisesti tytöille. Koska fyysisen aktiivisuuden positiiviset vaikutukset oppimiseen ja terveyteen ovat kiistattomat ja useissa tutkimuksissa osoitettu, on koulupäivän aikaisen fyysisen aktiivisuuden lisääminen perusteltua

    Identifying Cultural and Cognitive Proximity between Managers and Customers in Tornio and Haparanda Cross Border Region

    Daily intercultural interactions in cross-border regions such as those between customers and managers can be a source of knowledge and ideas. However, such interactions can pose distinctive constraints and opportunities for learning and exchange of ideas. This study adopts a relatively fine–grained quantitative approach to study elements of cognitive and cultural proximity which have a major impact on these interactions. It is based on a survey of 91 managers of small service firms and 312 customers in the twin city of Tornio and Haparanda on the border between Finland and Sweden. Seven elements of proximity were identified and measured. Six elements of perceived cognitive and cultural proximity including values, conservative values towards new ideas, knowledge and use of technology, use of a foreign language, sufficiently focusing or providing specific details and ways of solving problems were found significant in terms of shaping perceptions of Swedish and Finnish managers and customers, which shape these interactions. The results enhance our understanding of how daily cross-border intercultural can be examined in the context of cross-border regional knowledge transfer

    Submillimetric GPS distance measurement over short baselines: case study in inner consistency

    Distance determination in the open air with submillimetric accuracy is a challenging task usually carried out with the use of submillimetric distancemeters and costly observation campaigns. The present paper represents a first step in the research of the potential use of GPS for submillimetric distance determination for distances up to a few hundred metres consisting in the evaluation of GPS distance determination reproducibility. As will be concluded, reliable submillimetric precision is attainable after some hours of observation if the same equipment in both baseline ends is used, even considering that there still remain some long-term systematic effects of a few tenths of a millimetre. The need for precise absolute antenna calibration values is also shown to be critical for submillimetric distance reproducibility.This research is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (AYA2011-23232).     Rats, assorted shit and ‘racist groundwater’: towards extra-sectional understandings of childhoods and social-material processes

    Reflecting on a study of children’s outdoor play in a ‘white, working class estate’ in east London, this paper argues that social-material processes that are characteristically massy, indivisible, unseen, fluid and noxious have, problematically, remained hidden-in-plain-sight within multidisciplinary research with children and young people. For example, juxtaposing qualitative and autoethnographic data, we highlight children’s vivid, troubling narratives of swarming rats, smearing excrement, and percolating subsurface flows of water, toxins and racialised affects. In so doing, we develop a wider argument that key theorisations of matter, nature and nonhuman co-presences have often struggled to articulate the indivisibility of social-material processes from contemporary social-political-economic geographies. Over the course of the paper, as children’s raced, classed, exclusionary, disenfranchised narratives accumulate, we recognise the urgency of reconciling microgeographical accounts of play and materiality with readings of geographies of social-economic inequalities, exclusions, ethnicities, religions, memorialisations and mortalities. To this end, we initiate an argument for a move from intersectional to extra-sectional analyses that might retain intersectionality’s critical and political purchase, whilst simultaneously folding social-material complexities and vitalities into its theorisation

    SUMOylation of DNA topoisomerase IIα regulates histone H3 kinase Haspin and H3 phosphorylation in mitosis

    DNA topoisomerase II (TOP2) plays a pivotal role in faithful chromosome separation through its strand-passaging activity that resolves tangled genomic DNA during mitosis. Additionally, TOP2 controls progression of mitosis by activating cell cycle checkpoints. Recent work showed that the enzymatically inert C-terminal domain (CTD) of TOP2 and its posttranslational modification are critical to this checkpoint regulation. However, the molecular mechanism has not yet been determined. By using Xenopus laevis egg extract, we found that SUMOylation of DNA topoisomerase IIα (TOP2A) CTD regulates the localization of the histone H3 kinase Haspin and phosphorylation of histone H3 at threonine 3 at the centromere, two steps known to be involved in the recruitment of the chromosomal passenger complex (CPC) to kinetochores in mitosis. Robust centromeric Haspin localization requires SUMOylated TOP2A CTD binding activity through SUMO-interaction motifs and the phosphorylation of Haspin. We propose a novel mechanism through which the TOP2 CTD regulates the CPC via direct interaction with Haspin at mitotic centromeres

    The presence of intermediate aikinites in the Aberdeen area of the Kirki mine, western Thrace, Greece, is reported. The composition of the aikinites varies between 2.6 %–8.3 % Cu, 6.1 %–19.5 % Pb and 73.3 %–54.8 % Bi. In addition, a copper-bearing galenobismuthite was also identified. It is concluded that, rather than having quantized compositions, the intermediate aikinites more probably form a solid solution series between bismuthite and aikinite
