Effect of the attachment of ferromagnetic contacts on the conductivity and giant magnetoresistance of graphene nanoribbons
Carbon-based nanostructures and graphene, in particular, evoke a lot of
interest as new promising materials for nanoelectronics and spintronics. One of
the most important issue in this context is the impact of external electrodes
on electronic properties of graphene nanoribbons (GNR). The present theoretical
method is based on the tight-binding model and a modified recursive procedure
for Green's functions. The results show that within the ballistic transport
regime, the so called end-contacted geometry (of minimal GNR/electrode
interface area), is usually more advantageous for practical applications than
its side-contacted counterpart (with a larger coverage area), as far as the
electrical conductivity is concerned. As regards the giant magnetoresistance
coefficient, however, the situation is exactly opposite, since spin- splitting
effects are more pronounced in the lower conductive side-contacted setups.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Ab initio vibrations in nonequilibrium nanowires
We review recent results on electronic and thermal transport in two different
quasi one-dimensional systems: Silicon nanowires (SiNW) and atomic gold chains.
For SiNW's we compute the ballistic electronic and thermal transport properties
on equal footing, allowing us to make quantitative predictions for the
thermoelectric properties, while for the atomic gold chains we evaluate
microscopically the damping of the vibrations, due to the coupling of the chain
atoms to the modes in the bulk contacts. Both approaches are based on a

Localized Edge Vibrations and Edge Reconstruction by Joule Heating in Graphene Nanostructures
Under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License 3.0 (CC-BY).Control of the edge topology of graphene nanostructures is critical to graphene-based electronics. A means of producing atomically smooth zigzag edges using electronic current has recently been demonstrated in experiments [Jia et al., Science 323, 1701 (2009)]. We develop a microscopic theory for current-induced edge reconstruction using density functional theory. Our calculations provide evidence for localized vibrations at edge interfaces involving unpassivated armchair edges. We demonstrate that these vibrations couple to the current, estimate their excitation by Joule heating, and argue that they are the likely cause of the reconstructions observed in the experiments.A. Experimental Aerodynamic Characteristics of the Pegasus Air-Launched Booster and Comparisons with Predicted and Flight Results
Experimental longitudinal and lateral-directional aerodynamic characteristics were obtained for the Pegasus and Pegasus XL configurations over a Mach number range from 1.6 to 6 and angles of attack from -4 to +24 degrees. Angle of sideslip was varied from -6 to +6 degrees, and control surfaces were deflected to obtain elevon, aileron, and rudder effectiveness. Experimental data for the Pegasus configuration are compared with engineering code predictions performed by Nielsen Engineering & Research, Inc. (NEAR) in the aerodynamic design of the Pegasus vehicle, and with results from the Aerodynamic Preliminary Analysis System (APAS) code. Comparisons of experimental results are also made with longitudinal flight data from Flight #2 of the Pegasus vehicle. Results show that the longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of the Pegasus and Pegasus XL configurations are similar, having the same lift-curve slope and drag levels across the Mach number range. Both configurations are longitudinally stable, with stability decreasing towards neutral levels as Mach number increases. Directional stability is negative at moderate to high angles of attack due to separated flow over the vertical tail. Dihedral effect is positive for both configurations, but is reduced 30-50 percent for the Pegasus XL configuration because of the horizontal tail anhedral. Predicted longitudinal characteristics and both longitudinal and lateral-directional control effectiveness are generally in good agreement with experiment. Due to the complex leeside flowfield, lateral-directional characteristics are not as well predicted by the engineering codes. Experiment and flight data are in good agreement across the Mach number range
Supersonic aerodynamic characteristics of a circular body Earth-to-Orbit vehicle
The circular body configuration is a generic single- or multi-stage reusable Earth-to-orbit transport. A thick clipped-delta wing is the major lifting surface. For directional control, three different vertical fin arrangements were investigated: a conventional aft-mounted center fin, wingtip fins, and a nose-mounted fin. The tests were conducted in the Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel. The configuration is longitudinally stable about the estimated center of gravity of 0.72 body length up to a Mach number of about 3.0. Above Mach 3.0, the model is longitudinally unstable at low angles of attack but has a stable secondary trim point at angles of attack above 30 deg. The model has sufficient pitch control authority with elevator and body flap to produce stable trim over the test range. The model with the center fin is directionally stable at low angles of attack up to a Mach number of 3.90. The rudder-like surfaces on the tip fins and the all-movable nose fin are designed as active controls to produce artificial directional stability and are effective in producing yawing moment. The wing trailing-edge aileron surfaces are effective in producing rolling moment, but they also produce large adverse yawing moment
Mars Atmospheric Characterization Using Advanced 2-Micron Orbiting Lidar
Mars atmospheric characterization is critical for exploring the planet. Future Mars missions require landing massive payloads to the surface with high accuracy. The accuracy of entry, descent and landing (EDL) of a payload is a major technical challenge for future Mars missions. Mars EDL depends on atmospheric conditions such as density, wind and dust as well as surface topography. A Mars orbiting 2-micron lidar system is presented in this paper. This advanced lidar is capable of measuring atmospheric pressure and temperature profiles using the most abundant atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) on Mars. In addition Martian winds and surface altimetry can be mapped, independent of background radiation or geographical location. This orbiting lidar is a valuable tool for developing EDL models for future Mars missions
Data protection, safeguarding and the protection of children's privacy: exploring local authority guidance on parental photography at school events
Should parents be allowed to take photographs at school events? Media reports suggest that increasingly schools are answering no to this question, either prohibiting or imposing stringent restrictions upon such photography. The legal justifications for such restrictions are, however, unclear. Accordingly, in 2013 freedom of information requests were sent to local education authorities across England, Scotland and Wales, the aim being to determine what advice local education authorities provide to schools in relation to parental photography at school events, and to identify how education authorities’ understandings of the law influence the advice they offer. That research reveals that local education authorities’ understandings of the law vary significantly and that where authorities do not fully appreciate the extent of the legal obligations arising this may have significant repercussions for the children concerned
The fluctuation energy balance in non-suspended fluid-mediated particle transport
Here we compare two extreme regimes of non-suspended fluid-mediated particle
transport, transport in light and heavy fluids ("saltation" and "bedload",
respectively), regarding their particle fluctuation energy balance. From direct
numerical simulations, we surprisingly find that the ratio between collisional
and fluid drag dissipation of fluctuation energy is significantly larger in
saltation than in bedload, even though the contribution of interparticle
collisions to transport of momentum and energy is much smaller in saltation due
to the low concentration of particles in the transport layer. We conclude that
the much higher frequency of high-energy particle-bed impacts ("splash") in
saltation is the cause for this counter-intuitive behavior. Moreover, from a
comparison of these simulations to Particle Tracking Velocimetry measurements
which we performed in a wind tunnel under steady transport of fine and coarse
sand, we find that turbulent fluctuations of the flow produce particle
fluctuation energy at an unexpectedly high rate in saltation even under
conditions for which the effects of turbulence are usually believed to be
small
Effects of Density‐Driven Flows on the Long‐Term Morphodynamic Evolution of Funnel‐Shaped Estuaries
Subtidal flows driven by density gradients affect the tide‐averaged sediment transport in estuaries and, therefore, can influence their long‐term morphodynamic evolution. The three‐dimensional Coupled Ocean‐Atmosphere‐Wave‐Sediment Transport modeling system is applied to numerically analyze the effects of baroclinicity and Earth\u27s rotation on the long‐term morphodynamic evolution of idealized funnel‐shaped estuaries. The morphodynamic evolution in all the analyzed cases reproduced structures identified in many tide‐dominated estuaries: a meandering region in the fluvial‐tidal transition zone, a tidal maximum area close to the head, and a turbidity maxima region in the brackish zone. As the morphology of the estuaries evolved, the tidal propagation (including its asymmetry), the salinity gradient, and the strength of subtidal flows changed, which reflects the strong bathymetric control of these systems. The comparison with barotropic simulations showed that the three‐dimensional structure of the flow (induced by density gradients) has leading order effects on the morphodynamic evolution. Density gradient‐driven subtidal flows (1) promote near‐bed flood dominance and, consequently, the import of sediment into the estuary, (2) accelerate the morphodynamic evolution of the upper/middle estuary, (3) promote a more concave shape of the upper estuary and reduce the ebb‐tidal delta volume, and (4) produce an asymmetric bathymetry and inhibit the formation of alternate bars that would form under barotropic conditions.
