    On the Unification of Process Semantics: Logical Semantics

    We continue with the task of obtaining a unifying view of process semantics by considering in this case the logical characterization of the semantics. We start by considering the classic linear time-branching time spectrum developed by R.J. van Glabbeek. He provided a logical characterization of most of the semantics in his spectrum but, without following a unique pattern. In this paper, we present a uniform logical characterization of all the semantics in the enlarged spectrum. The common structure of the formulas that constitute all the corresponding logics gives us a much clearer picture of the spectrum, clarifying the relations between the different semantics, and allows us to develop generic proofs of some general properties of the semantics.Comment: In Proceedings SOS 2011, arXiv:1108.279

    Antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonella isolated pig carriers

    Ninety-six Salmonella isolates from healthy carrier pigs were obtained from a survey in pig farms of Catalonia (Spain). Isolates were serotyped and examined for their antimicrobial susceptibility against a panel of 18 antimicrobial agents. Only isolates having different phenotypic and antimicrobial susceptibility characteristics were considered. With this restriction, we considered to have 62 different strains belonging to 17 serotypes. The most common serotype was Anatum (16.1 %) followed by Rissen (14.5 %), Typhimurium (11.3 %), Derby (9.7 %), Tilburg (8.1 %), Goldcoast (8.1 %) and Typhimurium variant 4,5,12:i:- (6.5 %). Others 10 serotypes were also isolated less than three times each. Antimicrobial susceptibility analysis showed that the highest level of resistance was against tetracycline (68.8 %). Sixty-two percent of the strains showed resistance to three or more antimicrobial agents and 46% were resistant to five or more drugs. The maximum number of compounds to which two strains were resistant was 10 (corresponding to a 4,5,12:i:- strain). None of the strains was resistant to colistin or ceftriaxone and 12 strains were susceptible to all antimicrobial agents tested

    FOXP2 gene and language impairment in schizophrenia: association and epigenetic studies

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Schizophrenia is considered a language related human specific disease. Previous studies have reported evidence of positive selection for schizophrenia-associated genes specific to the human lineage. <it>FOXP2 </it>shows two important features as a convincing candidate gene for schizophrenia vulnerability: <it>FOXP2 </it>is the first gene related to a language disorder, and it has been subject to positive selection in the human lineage.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Twenty-seven SNPs of <it>FOXP2 </it>were genotyped in a cohort of 293 patients with schizophrenia and 340 controls. We analyzed in particular the association with the poverty of speech and the intensity of auditory hallucinations. Potential expansion of three trinucleotide repeats of <it>FOXP2 </it>was also screened in a subsample. Methylation analysis of a CpG island, located in the first exon of the gene, was performed in post-mortem brain samples, as well as qRT-PCR analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A significant association was found between the SNP rs2253478 and the item Poverty of speech of the Manchester scale (p = 0.038 after Bonferroni correction). In patients, we detected higher degree of methylation in the left parahippocampus gyrus than in the right one.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p><it>FOXP2 </it>might be involved in the language disorder in patients with schizophrenia. Epigenetic factors might be also implicated in the developing of this disorder.</p

    Macroscopic and microscopic description of phase transition in cerium isotopes

    The spherical-to-deformed phase transition in cerium isotopes recently suggested to occur between Ce146 and Ce148 has been examined in the framework of the macroscopic algebraic collective model and two microscopic approaches, namely Skyrme-Hartree-Fock + Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) calculations and the symmetry conserving configuration mixing method with Gogny energy density functionals applied also to the neighboring nuclei along the cerium isotopic chain. Possible spectral signatures of the phase transition are discussed in more details. The microscopic calculations predict octupole softness manifested by rather flat potential energy curves as a function of the octupole deformation parameter β3 for Ce146 and Ce148 and shape coexistence characterized by axially symmetric 0+ states, triaxial 2+ bands, and octupole deformation for the lowest 1- state

    Combined homogeneous and heterogeneous hydrogenation to yield catalyst-free solutions of parahydrogen-hyperpolarized [1-13C]succinate

    We show that catalyst-free aqueous solutions of hyperpolarized [1-13C]succinate can be produced using parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP) and a combination of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation reactions. We generate hyperpolarized [1-13C]fumarate via PHIP using para-enriched hydrogen gas with a homogeneous ruthenium catalyst, and subsequently remove the toxic catalyst and reaction side products via a purification procedure. Following this, we perform a second hydrogenation reaction using normal hydrogen gas to convert the fumarate into succinate using a solid Pd/Al2O3 catalyst. This inexpensive polarization protocol has a turnover time of a few minutes, and represents a major advance for in vivo applications of [1-13C]succinate as a hyperpolarized contrast agent

    Covariant-contravariant simulation and conformance simulation are two generalizations of the simple notion of simulation which aim at capturing the fact that it is not always the case that “the larger the number of behaviors, the better”. Therefore, they can be considered to be more adequate to express the fact that a system is a correct implementation of some specification. We have previously shown that these two more elaborated notions fit well within the categorical framework developed to study the notion of simulation in a generic way. Now we show that their behaviors have also simple and natural logical characterizations, though more elaborated than those for the plain simulation semantics

    Snail1 suppresses TGF-β-induced apoptosis and is sufficient to trigger EMT in hepatocytes

    11 påginas.Although TGF-β suppresses early stages of tumour development, it later contributes to tumour progression when cells become resistant to its suppressive effects. In addition to circumventing TGF-β-induced growth arrest and apoptosis, malignant tumour cells become capable of undergoing epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), favouring invasion and metastasis. Therefore, defining the mechanisms that allow cancer cells to escape from the suppressive effects of TGF-β is fundamental to understand tumour progression and to design specific therapies. Here, we have examined the role of Snail1 as a suppressor of TGF-β-induced apoptosis in murine non-transformed hepatocytes, rat and human hepatocarcinoma cell lines and transgenic mice. We show that Snail1 confers resistance to TGF-β-induced cell death and that it is sufficient to induce EMT in adult hepatocytes, cells otherwise refractory to this transition upon exposure to TGF-β. Furthermore, we show that Snail1 silencing prevents EMT and restores the cell death response induced by TGF-β. As Snail1 is a known target of TGF-β signalling, our data indicate that Snail1 might transduce the tumour-promoting effects of TGF-β, namely the EMT concomitant with the resistance to cell death.Peer reviewe

    A large geometric distortion in the first photointermediate of rhodopsin, determined by double-quantum solid-state NMR

    Double-quantum magic-angle-spinning NMR experiments were performed on 11,12-C-13(2)-retinylidene-rhodopsin under illumination at low temperature, in order to characterize torsional angle changes at the C11-C12 photoisomerization site. The sample was illuminated in the NMR rotor at low temperature (similar to 120 K) in order to trap the primary photointermediate, bathorhodopsin. The NMR data are consistent with a strong torsional twist of the HCCH moiety at the isomerization site. Although the HCCH torsional twist was determined to be at least 40A degrees, it was not possible to quantify it more closely. The presence of a strong twist is in agreement with previous Raman observations. The energetic implications of this geometric distortion are discussed
