Quality Management, Job-related Contentment and Performance: an empirical analysis of British workplaces
Purpose - This article investigates whether a quality management philosophy underlies the joint use of operations and human resource management practices, and the relationships with job-related contentment and performance.
Design/ methodology/approach - Data from an economy-wide survey is used to test hypotheses via latent variable analyses (latent trait and latent class models) and structural equation models. The sensitivity of each path is then assessed using regression models.
Findings – Different elements rather than a unified philosophy are identified. A managerial approach that integrates total quality management and just-in-time procedures is rare, but is associated with the quality of the product or service delivered. Labor productivity and quality are independent of the level of job-related contentment in the workplace. Although the average workforce is content, high involvement management and motivational support practices are associated with job anxiety. On the positive side, job enrichment is linked to labor productivity, thus suggesting potential gains through job design.
Originality/value - The study adds evidence from a national sample about a comprehensive range of management practices, and suggests distinct outcomes from different elements of quality management. Additionally, it shows that performance expectations based on previous studies may not hold in large nationwide heterogeneous samples
Enhanced second harmonic generation from resonant GaAs gratings
We study second harmonic generation in nonlinear, GaAs gratings. We find
large enhancement of conversion efficiency when the pump field excites the
guided mode resonances of the grating. Under these circumstances the spectrum
near the pump wavelength displays sharp resonances characterized by dramatic
enhancements of local fields and favorable conditions for second harmonic
generation, even in regimes of strong linear absorption at the harmonic
wavelength. In particular, in a GaAs grating pumped at 1064nm, we predict
second harmonic conversion efficiencies approximately five orders of magnitude
larger than conversion rates achievable in either bulk or etalon structures of

The X-ray eclipse of the dwarf nova HT CAS observed by the XMM-Newton satellite: spectral and timing analysis
A cataclysmic variable is a binary system consisting of a white dwarf that
accretes material from a secondary object via the Roche-lobe mechanism. In the
case of long enough observation, a detailed temporal analysis can be performed,
allowing the physical properties of the binary system to be determined. We
present an XMM-Newton observation of the dwarf nova HT Cas acquired to resolve
the binary system eclipses and constrain the origin of the X-rays observed. We
also compare our results with previous ROSAT and ASCA data. After the spectral
analysis of the three EPIC camera signals, the observed X-ray light curve was
studied with well known techniques and the eclipse contact points obtained.
The X-ray spectrum can be described by thermal bremsstrahlung of temperature
keV plus a black-body component (upper limit) with
temperature eV. Neglecting the black-body, the bolometric
absorption corrected flux is erg
s cm, which, for a distance of HT Cas of 131 pc, corresponds to a
bolometric luminosity of erg s.
The study of the eclipse in the EPIC light curve permits us to constrain the
size and location of the X-ray emitting region, which turns out to be close to
the white dwarf radius. We measure an X-ray eclipse somewhat smaller (but only
at a level of ) than the corresponding optical one. If this
is the case, we have possibly identified the signature of either high latitude
emission or a layer of X-ray emitting material partially obscured by an

Parallel approach to sliding window sums
Sliding window sums are widely used in bioinformatics applications, including
sequence assembly, k-mer generation, hashing and compression. New vector
algorithms which utilize the advanced vector extension (AVX) instructions
available on modern processors, or the parallel compute units on GPUs and
FPGAs, would provide a significant performance boost for the bioinformatics
applications. We develop a generic vectorized sliding sum algorithm with
speedup for window size w and number of processors P is O(P/w) for a generic
sliding sum. For a sum with commutative operator the speedup is improved to
O(P/log(w)). When applied to the genomic application of minimizer based k-mer
table generation using AVX instructions, we obtain a speedup of over 5X.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

This paper is concerned with user modelling issues such as adaptive educational environments, adaptive information retrieval, and support for collaboration. The HomeWork project is examining the use of learner modelling strategies within both school and home environments for young children aged 5 – 7 years. The learning experience within the home context can vary considerably from school especially for very young learners, and this project focuses on the use of modelling which can take into account the informality and potentially contrasting learning styles experienced within the home and school
A Post-AGB Star in the Small Magellanic Cloud Observed with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph
We have observed an evolved star with a rare combination of spectral
features, MSX SMC 029, in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) using the
low-resolution modules of the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space
Telescope. A cool dust continuum dominates the spectrum of MSX SMC 029. The
spectrum also shows both emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
and absorption at 13.7 micron from C2H2, a juxtaposition seen in only two other
sources, AFGL 2688 and IRAS 13416-6243, both post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB)
objects. As in these sources, the PAH spectrum has the unusual trait that the
peak emission in the 7-9 micron complex lies beyond 8.0 micron. In addition,
the 8.6 micron feature has an intensity as strong as the C-C modes which
normally peak between 7.7 and 7.9 micron. The relative flux of the feature at
11.3 micron to that at 8 micron suggests that the PAHs in MSX SMC 029 either
have a low ionization fraction or are largely unprocessed. The 13-16 micron
wavelength region shows strong absorption features similar to those observed in
the post-AGB objects AFGL 618 and SMP LMC 11. This broad absorption may arise
from the same molecules which have been identified in those sources: C2H2,
C4H2, HC3N, and C6H6. The similarities between MSX SMC 029, AFGL 2688, and AFGL
618 lead us to conclude that MSX SMC 029 has evolved off the AGB in only the
past few hundred years, making it the third post-AGB object identified in the

Diffractive arrays of gold nanoparticles near an interface: critical role of the substrate
The optical properties of periodic arrays of plasmonic nanoantennas are
strongly affected by coherent multiple scattering in the plane of the array,
which leads to sharp spectral resonances in both transmission and reflection
when the wavelength is commensurate with the period. We demonstrate that the
presence of a substrate (i.e., an asymmetric refractive-index environment) can
inhibit long-range coupling between the particles and suppress lattice
resonances, in agreement with recent experimental results. We find the
substrate-to-superstrate index contrast and the distance between the array and
the interface to be critical parameters determining the strength of diffractive
coupling. Our rigorous electromagnetic simulations are well reproduced by a
simple analytical model. These findings are important in the design of periodic
structures and in the assessment of their optical resonances for potential use
in sensing and other photonic technologies
Multi-wavelength observations of the binary system PSR B1259-63/LS 2883 around the 2010-2011 periastron passage
We report on broad multi-wavelength observations of the 2010-2011 periastron
passage of the gamma-ray loud binary system PSR B1259-63. High resolution
interferometric radio observations establish extended radio emission trailing
the position of the pulsar. Observations with the Fermi Gamma-ray Space
Telescope reveal GeV gamma-ray flaring activity of the system, reaching the
spin-down luminosity of the pulsar, around 30 days after periastron. There are
no clear signatures of variability at radio, X-ray and TeV energies at the time
of the GeV flare. Variability around periastron in the H emission line,
can be interpreted as the gravitational interaction between the pulsar and the
circumstellar disk. The equivalent width of the H grows from a few days
before periastron until a few days later, and decreases again between 18 and 46
days after periastron. In near infrared we observe the similar decrease of the
equivalent width of Br line between the 40th and 117th day after the
periastron. For the idealized disk, the variability of the H line
represents the variability of the mass and size of the disk. We discuss
possible physical relations between the state of the disk and GeV emission
under assumption that GeV flare is directly related to the decrease of the disk
