    The Use of Physical Activity to Promote Effective Coping and Life Skill Development in Minneapolis Sheltered Youth

    Homeless youth are a marginalized culture in our society. The resiliency of this population is remarkable. It is crucial that the transcultural nurse aid these youth in finding inner strength, making healthy choices, and being a source of support lbr the youth. By developing and implementing this rnodel of integration, the author was able to I organize a time of physical activity, social interaction, relationship building, and positive reinforcement. The processes and relationships unfolded throughout the sessions. The model of integration allowed the author to experience personal and professional growth, acknowledge the profound impact of teamwork, and practice the use of intentionality. Most importantly, the author was able to enter into the culture of youth through the youth\u27s eyes, a remarkable, life changing experience

    Evaluating UV/H 2 O 2 exposure as a DEHP degradation treatment for plasticized PVC

    Millions of tons of plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) materials are disposed every year. A biologically sustainable and green method for removal of toxic plasticizers from polymer systems after disposal is highly desired since plasticizers can leach out into the environment over decades. Here we compare the surface and bulk structural changes of DEHP‐plasticized PVC after two treatments intended to degrade bis‐2‐ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) in PVC plastic: short wave (254 nm) UV with and without the addition of 35 wt % H 2 O 2. Sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG) reveals the addition of aqueous H 2 O 2 decreases CH 3 signals on the surface of the films up to 8 h, due to increased molecular disorder and the removal of alkyl chains. Secondary ion mass spectrometry demonstrates that the degradation of DEHP after 8 h of reaction is similar with and without the use of H 2 O 2 . However, FTIR results reveal that the introduction of H 2 O 2 reduces bulk DEHP degradation and leads to competing radical chain scission reactions with PVC. Therefore, simple short wave UV exposure may be an effective means to degrade DEHP within and on PVC plastic and the addition of H 2 O 2 is only beneficial if additional degradation of PVC is needed. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     Canine Epithelial Skin Tumours: Expression of the Stem Cell Markers Lgr5, Lgr6 and Sox9 in Light of New Cancer Stem Cell Theories.

    Evidence is accumulating that tumour development is driven by cancer stem cells (CSCs). In order to understand the presence and potential contribution of stem cells (SCs) as tumour-initiating cells in canine cutaneous tumours, we selected three putative SC markers (Lgr5, Lgr6 and Sox9) and investigated their expression pattern, level of protein and mRNA expression, in 43 canine hair follicle (HF) and 18 canine cutaneous epidermal tumours by immunohistochemistry and qRT-PCR, using normal skin samples as controls. Lgr5 protein expression was not detected in epidermal and HF tumours; however, Lgr5 mRNA overexpression was evident in some HF tumours. Sox9 was expressed in several tumour cases, both at the protein and mRNA level. The Lgr6 antibody tested was not suitable for formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue samples, but Lgr6 gene showed higher expression in several samples of both HF and epidermal tumours compared with normal skin. Significantly higher mRNA expression levels of the three SC markers were found in trichoblastomas (TB) compared with basal cell carcinomas (BCC). The present results indicated that canine HF and epidermal tumours might have common tumour-initiating cells. The mRNA expression of the three selected SC markers, especially Lgr5, could be potentially useful in the distinction between canine TB and BCC

    Reversible Surface Wettability by Silanization

    The chemistry and wettability of oxygen containing surfaces can be conveniently modified by silanization with various organosilanes which form SiO bonds on the surface. This work shows that a superhydrophobic nanoporous polymer coating can be reverted to its previous hydrophilic state by removing the fluoroalkyl silane with fluoride anions using tetrabutyl ammonium fluoride. This leads to a completely reversible process of silanization and desilanization which can be performed in less than 2 min for each step as proven by droplet shape analysis and secondary ion mass spectrometry. Additionally, the desilanization solution can be applied spatially by an automated liquid dispenser or manually by a brush, leading to patterns with different wettability, such as droplet microarrays or liquid channels

    CubeSat Laser Communication Crosslink Pointing Demonstration

    An opportunity arose to demonstrate optical crosslink pointing between two CubeSats in LEO using spacecraft not specifically designed for that purpose. The AeroCube-7 spacecraft, designed for optical downlinks as part of the Optical Communication and Sensor Demonstration mission, was tasked to point its communications laser at the ISARA spacecraft to demonstrate the capability of one CubeSat to track another in LEO. The ISARA spacecraft, which does not carry a data receiver, but does carry a short-wave infrared camera (SWIR) as part of the CUMULOS payload, was tasked to track the AeroCube-7 spacecraft and use the SWIR camera to record the OCSD laser. The SWIR images were downloaded over an RF channel and used to evaluate the pointing and tracking of both spacecraft. Two successful tests of crosslink pointing were completed between AeroCube-7 and ISARA, providing a demonstration in principle of the capability, and laying the groundwork for more refined experiments that will use this technique for on-orbit measurements of beam profiling. Further tests between AeroCube-11 and ISARA are also in preparation to demonstrate crosslink pointing in a more-challenging orbital configuration

    Substance Misuse Education for Physicians: Why Older People are Important.

    This perspective article focuses on the need for training and education for undergraduate medical students on substance-related disorders, and describes initiatives undertaken in the United Kingdom (UK), Netherlands, United States (US), and Norway to develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed by future doctors to treat patients adequately. In addition, we stress that in postgraduate training, further steps should be taken to develop Addiction Medicine as a specialized and transverse medical domain. Alcohol use disorder is a growing public health problem in the geriatric population, and one that is likely to continue to increase as the baby boomer generation ages. Prescription drug misuse is a major concern, and nicotine misuse remains problematic in a substantial minority. Thus, Addiction Medicine training should address the problems for this specific population. In recent years, several countries have started an Addiction Medicine specialty. Although addiction psychiatry has been a subspecialty in the UK and US for more than 20 years, in most countries it has been a more recent development. Additional courses on addiction should be integrated into the curriculum at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as form part of the continuous training of other medical specialists. It is recommended that further research and mapping of what is currently taught in medical programs be undertaken, so as to enhance medical education in addiction and improve treatment services

    Sex-Related Differences in Gene Expression in Human Skeletal Muscle

    There is sexual dimorphism of skeletal muscle, the most obvious feature being the larger muscle mass of men. The molecular basis for this difference has not been clearly defined. To identify genes that might contribute to the relatively greater muscularity of men, we compared skeletal muscle gene expression profiles of 15 normal men and 15 normal women by using comprehensive oligonucleotide microarrays. Although there were sex-related differences in expression of several hundred genes, very few of the differentially expressed genes have functions that are obvious candidates for explaining the larger muscle mass of men. The men tended to have higher expression of genes encoding mitochondrial proteins, ribosomal proteins, and a few translation initiation factors. The women had >2-fold greater expression than the men (P<0.0001) of two genes that encode proteins in growth factor pathways known to be important in regulating muscle mass: growth factor receptor-bound 10 (GRB10) and activin A receptor IIB (ACVR2B). GRB10 encodes a protein that inhibits insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) signaling. ACVR2B encodes a myostatin receptor. Quantitative RT-PCR confirmed higher expression of GRB10 and ACVR2B genes in these women. In an independent microarray study of 10 men and 9 women with facioscapulohumeral dystrophy, women had higher expression of GRB10 (2.7-fold, P<0.001) and ACVR2B (1.7-fold, P<0.03). If these sex-related differences in mRNA expression lead to reduced IGF-1 activity and increased myostatin activity, they could contribute to the sex difference in muscle size
