    Reduction of Coxiella burnetii prevalence by vaccination of goats and sheep, the Netherlands

    Recently, the number of human Q fever cases in the Netherlands increased dramatically. In response to this increase, dairy goats and dairy sheep were vaccinated against Coxiella burnetii. All pregnant dairy goats and dairy sheep in herds positive for Q fever were culled. We identified the effect of vaccination on bacterial shedding by small ruminants. On the day of culling, samples of uterine fluid, vaginal mucus, and milk were obtained from 957 pregnant animals in 13 herds. Prevalence and bacterial load were reduced in vaccinated animals compared with unvaccinated animals. These effects were most pronounced in animals during their first pregnancy. Results indicate that vaccination may reduce bacterial load in the environment and human exposure to C. burnetii

    The malignant epidemic-changing patterns of trauma

    Objectives and Setting. The worldwide burden of trauma is increasing, but is unequally distributed between nations. Trauma in South Africa targets the young and productive in society and imposes a major burden on the health infrastructure. We undertook a review of injury trends among patients attending the Johannesburg Hospital Trauma Unit (JHTU) and the Johannesburg Medicolegal Laboratory (JMLL) in order to document the evolution in patterns of trauma over a 17-year period of great social and political change. Design, subjects and outcome measures. This was a retrospective review of all priority-one patients attending the JHTU from January 1985 to December 2001. The JHTU trauma database was used to retrieve information on patient demographics, wound mechanism and injury severity. The database at the JMLL, maintained since 1996, was examined and the manner and place of death were analysed.Results. The JHTU has seen an unprecedented increase in the number of trauma patients over the last 17 years. The patients' demographic profiles have altered and injury is now predominantly due to interpersonal violence. Unnatural deaths examined at the JMLL have declined by 19% since 1996; however, the proportion of those deaths due to gunshot wounds has risen.Conclusions. The social and political changes in South Africa in recent years have led to changes in the injury profiles seen at the JHTU. Part of the increase can be explained by desegregation and a reduction in the provision of local hospital services; however, the impact of urbanisation within South Africa, cross-border migration and the high incidence of substance abuse are recognised. Evidence supports the implementation of legislative, environmental, social and behavioural interventions to contain and reduce the incidence and impact of violence and injury. Concerted efforts must be made at all levels to curb South Africa's  trauma  epidemic

    Motor control by precisely timed spike patterns

    A fundamental problem in neuroscience is to understand how sequences of action potentials ("spikes") encode information about sensory signals and motor outputs. Although traditional theories of neural coding assume that information is conveyed by the total number of spikes fired (spike rate), recent studies of sensory and motor activity have shown that far more information is carried by the millisecond-scale timing patterns of action potentials (spike timing). However, it is unknown whether or how subtle differences in spike timing drive differences in perception or behavior, leaving it unclear whether the information carried by spike timing actually plays a causal role in brain function. Here we demonstrate how a precise spike timing code is read out downstream by the muscles to control behavior. We provide both correlative and causal evidence to show that the nervous system uses millisecond-scale variations in the timing of spikes within multi-spike patterns to regulate a relatively simple behavior - respiration in the Bengalese finch, a songbird. These findings suggest that a fundamental assumption of current theories of motor coding requires revision, and that significant improvements in applications, such as neural prosthetic devices, can be achieved by using precise spike timing information.Comment: 48 pages, 16 figure

    Can agri-food companies do it all? Develop new markets, secure supply, protect reputations, ensure profits and reduce poverty, create jobs and guarantee food supplies? Company strategies now commonly refer to ‘creating shared value’ and ‘inclusive business’. But with growing pressure on resources, a billion hungry people and some four billion people at the base of the economic pyramid by 2050, are we making progress fast enough? What options are there with real promise? And, how can all stakeholders collaborate better to bring change at scale? This report gives the outcomes of the ‘From Islands of Success to Seas of Change’ initiative on scaling inclusive agri-food markets. It combines background research, interviews and case studies with the insights of 100 leaders from business, government, NGOs, research, and farmer organizations who attended the Seas of Change workshop in April 2012. The case for scaling inclusive agrifood markets is explained and ten key challenges are explored. This leads to lessons for key stakeholders and a follow-up agenda for improved targeting of inclusive investments

    Cross-species parallels in babbling : animals and algorithms

    A key feature of vocal ontogeny in a variety of taxa with extensive vocal repertoires is a developmental pattern in which vocal exploration is followed by a period of category formation that results in a mature species-specific repertoire. Vocal development preceding the adult repertoire is often called ‘babbling’, a term used to describe aspects of vocal development in species of vocal-learning birds, some marine mammals, some New World monkeys, some bats and humans. The paper summarizes the results of research on babbling in examples from five taxa and proposes a unifying definition facilitating their comparison. There are notable similarities across these species in the developmental pattern of vocalizations, suggesting that vocal production learning might require babbling. However, the current state of the literature is insufficient to confirm this suggestion. We suggest directions for future research to elucidate this issue, emphasizing the importance of (i) expanding the descriptive data and seeking species with complex mature repertoires where babbling may not occur or may occur only to a minimal extent; (ii) (quasi-)experimental research to tease apart possible mechanisms of acquisition and/or self-organizing development; and (iii) computational modelling as a methodology to test hypotheses about the origins and functions of babbling
