    Non-linear model equation for three-dimensional Bunsen flames

    The non linear description of laminar premixed flames has been very successful, because of the existence of model equations describing the dynamics of these flames. The Michelson Sivashinsky equation is the most well known of these equations, and has been used in different geometries, including three-dimensional quasi-planar and spherical flames. Another interesting model, usually known as the Frankel equation,which could in principle take into account large deviations of the flame front, has been used for the moment only for two-dimensional expanding and Bunsen flames. We report here for the first time numerical solutions of this equation for three-dimensional flames

    Are acoustical parameters of begging call elements of thin-billed prions related to chick condition?

    Chicks of burrowing petrels use begging calls to advertise their hunger levels when parents arrived at the nest. In a previous study, adult thin-billed prions Pachyptila belcheri responded to higher begging call rates of their single chick by regurgitating larger meals. We tested whether acoustic parameters of begging call elements may also be involved in signalling. To describe variation in begging, we determined begging session parameters, namely the duration, number of calls and the mean and maximum rate of calling. We then digitised calls and carried out a semi-automatic extraction of six acoustic parameters of call elements, including mean and maximum acoustic frequency, the length of call elements and the location of the maximum frequency and amplitude within calls. Chicks showed strong individual differences in all parameters. While the session parameters were correlated with body condition and with the meal size the chick received, none of the acoustic parameters were related to body condition and provisioning. A cross-fostering experiment showed the same pattern, as only session parameters changed related to an experimentally altered body condition, while acoustical cues appear to play no role in signalling hunger levels. We suggest that this may be explained by the absence of sibling competition in these birds. As parents do not need to decide which chick to feed, immediate information on condition at the time of adult arrival may not be required

    The Unmentionable Apophthegm : An Overview of the Pagan Greek Tradition

    Early usage of the noun ጀπáœčÏ†ÎžÎ”ÎłÎŒÎ± and the corresponding verb are examined and discussed. The verb is consistently used to underline an authoritative speech act, calling attention to a particular individual’s dramatic statement. The noun “apophthegm” denote’s someone’s pointed utterance, often, but not necessarily, in response to a question. Overlappings of apophthegm with gnƍmē, apomnēmoneuma, paroimia and chreia are also discussed. Apophthegms labeled as such in Xenophon, Aristotle, Plutarch, Diogenes Laertius, Stobaeus and other sources, are shown to be practically indistinguishable from chreia. Evidence for early collections of pagan apophthegms is summarized: apophthegmata occurs as a title for collections or as a header introducing lists of sayings in biographies from Hellenistic to medieval times. The collecting of anecdotes and apophthegms of famous people was related to growing biographical interests in character studies as well as a reflection of an increasingly literate society, or at least of the literary habits of an educated elite with cosmopolitan tastes. Pagan Greek apophthegms attributed to Greek celebrities, usually making a moral point, sometimes only a witty one, were ubiquitous in Greek and Roman society by the time the Christians got around to compiling their own collections of the apophthegms of the desert Fathers

    AbstractIn this paper we examine some properties of complete {;k; q};-arcs in projective planes of order q2. In particular, we derive a lower bound for k, and we exhibit a family of arcs having low values of k which exist in every such plane having a Baer subplane. In addition we resolve the existence problem for complete {;k; 3};-arcs in PG(2, 9)
