    Part I of this paper described the community unit as one of the indirect and implicit means we employ in specifying the behavior of a proposed learning system. It has been pointed out that, for complex problems, the community unit's vision tends to be too narrow and restricted because of its piecemeal manner of attacking problems.This second part of the paper describes a planning mechanism which attempts to overcome this difficulty by taking a larger view of a given task. After surveying the task in general, the planning mechanism subdivides the task into a hierarchy of subtasks each by itself presumably easier to perform than the original task. This hierarchy of subtasks comprises a rough sketch of a possible course of action which guides the community unit.To manage classes of problems and to make efficient use of past experience, an induction mechanism is proposed. The induction mechanism will take a still larger view by considering the system's past experience with various problems and by attempting to apply that experience to related problems which have not previously been encountered

    A quadrilateral rendering primitive

    The only surface primitives that are supported by common graphics hardware are triangles and more complex shapes have to be triangulated before being sent to the rasterizer. Even quadrilaterals, which are frequently used in many applications, are rendered as a pair of triangles after splitting them along either diagonal. This creates an undesirable C1 -discontinuity that is visible in the shading or texture signal. We propose a new method that overcomes this drawback and is designed to be implemented in hardware as a new rasterizer. It processes a potentially non-planar quadrilateral directly without any splitting and interpolates attributes smoothly inside the quadrilateral.     Bisphenol A (BPA) in human serum and urine : exposure via dermal absorption from thermal paper receipts and oral ingestion after transfer from hand to food

However thermal receipt paper represents another potential source of BPA exposure via direct absorption through the skin or indirectly via transfer of the chemical to food. This study examined the relative abundance of BPA in thermal receipt papers from businesses in Columbia. Our aim was to determine whether handling thermal receipt paper prior to eating food has an effect on serum and urine BPA concentrations. Measurements of BPA in 51 receipts were taken to assess the amount of the BPA available for dermal transfer. Blood and serum measurements from volunteer human participants were taken: Controls (n=10) with no manipulation, participants exposed to BPA in thermal paper either dermally (n=24) or dermally and orally (n=10) after a twoday period of avoiding exposure to BPA. BPA was found to be present in 46% of the receipts measured (mean ±SEM: 19.7±1.0). The amount of BPA transferred to hands was about 100-fold higher when wet with hand sanitizer than dry. BPA transferred to wet hands and then consequently to French fries that were eaten. This resulted in significant elevation of unconjugated serum BPA from a baseline of 0.28.5±1.2 to a maximum of 5.9±2.6 ng/ml after 60 min. With total urine BPA (æg/g creatinine) 0.5±0.2 at baseline and 23.4±7.4 at 90 minutes after being exposed from a receipt that contained 27.2 mg BPA/g receipt paper. Serum concentrations were suggestive of both oral and dermal BPA transmission. In conclusion, thermal paper is a significant source of BPA exposure that regulatory agencies have not included in exposure estimates.Includes bibliographical references (pages 71-74)

    Standard texture mapping of real-world meshes suffers from the presence of seams that need to be introduced in order to avoid excessive distortions and to make the topology of the mesh compatible to the one of the texture domain. In contrast, cube maps provide a mechanism that could be used for seamless texture mapping with low distortion, but only if the object roughly resembles a cube. We extend this concept to arbitrary meshes by using as texture domain the surface of a polycube whose shape is similar to that of the given mesh. Our approach leads to a seamless texture mapping method that is simple enough to be implemented in currently available graphics hardware

    Mean value coordinates–based caricature and expression synthesis

    We present a novel method for caricature synthesis based on mean value coordinates (MVC). Our method can be applied to any single frontal face image to learn a specified caricature face pair for frontal and 3D caricature synthesis. This technique only requires one or a small number of exemplar pairs and a natural frontal face image training set, while the system can transfer the style of the exemplar pair across individuals. Further exaggeration can be fulfilled in a controllable way. Our method is further applied to facial expression transfer, interpolation, and exaggeration, which are applications of expression editing. Additionally, we have extended our approach to 3D caricature synthesis based on the 3D version of MVC. With experiments we demonstrate that the transferred expressions are credible and the resulting caricatures can be characterized and recognized

    Mesopore etching under supercritical conditions – A shortcut to hierarchically porous silica monoliths

    Hierarchically porous silica monoliths are obtained in the two-step Nakanishi process, where formation of a macro microporous silica gel is followed by widening micropores to mesopores through surface etching. The latter step is carried out through hydrothermal treatment of the gel in alkaline solution and necessitates a lengthy solvent exchange of the aqueous pore fluid before the ripened gel can be dried and calcined into a mechanically stable macro mesoporous monolith. We show that using an ethanol water (95.6/4.4, v/v) azeotrope as supercritical fluid for mesopore etching eliminates the solvent exchange, ripening, and drying steps of the classic route and delivers silica monoliths that can withstand fast heating rates for calcination. The proposed shortcut decreases the overall preparation time from ca. one week to ca. one day. Porosity data show that the alkaline conditions for mesopore etching are crucial to obtain crack-free samples with a narrow mesopore size distribution. Physical reconstruction of selected samples by confocal laser scanning microscopy and subsequent morphological analysis confirms that monoliths prepared via the proposed shortcut possess the high homogeneity of silica skeleton and macropore space that is desirable in adsorbents for flow-through applications

    Opioid receptor activation triggering downregulation of cAMP improves effectiveness of anti-cancer drugs in treatment of glioblastoma

    Glioblastoma are the most frequent and malignant human brain tumors, having a very poor prognosis. The enhanced radio- and chemoresistance of glioblastoma and the glioblastoma stem cells might be the main reason why conventional therapies fail. The second messenger cyclic AMP (cAMP) controls cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Downregulation of cAMP sensitizes tumor cells for anti-cancer treatment. Opioid receptor agonists triggering opioid receptors can activate inhibitory Gi proteins, which, in turn, block adenylyl cyclase activity reducing cAMP. In this study, we show that downregulation of cAMP by opioid receptor activation improves the effectiveness of anti-cancer drugs in treatment of glioblastoma. The µ-opioid receptor agonist D,L-methadone sensitizes glioblastoma as well as the untreatable glioblastoma stem cells for doxorubicin-induced apoptosis and activation of apoptosis pathways by reversing deficient caspase activation and deficient downregulation of XIAP and Bcl-xL, playing critical roles in glioblastomas' resistance. Blocking opioid receptors using the opioid receptor antagonist naloxone or increasing intracellular cAMP by 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX) strongly reduced opioid receptor agonist-induced sensitization for doxorubicin. In addition, the opioid receptor agonist D,L-methadone increased doxorubicin uptake and decreased doxorubicin efflux, whereas doxorubicin increased opioid receptor expression in glioblastomas. Furthermore, opioid receptor activation using D,L-methadone inhibited tumor growth significantly in vivo. Our findings suggest that opioid receptor activation triggering downregulation of cAMP is a promising strategy to inhibit tumor growth and to improve the effectiveness of anti-cancer drugs in treatment of glioblastoma and in killing glioblastoma stem cells

    Integrating copy number data of 64 iAMP21 BCP-ALL patients narrows the common region of amplification to 1.57 Mb

    Background and purposeIntrachromosomal amplification of chromosome 21 (iAMP21) is a rare subtype of B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (BCP-ALL). It is unknown how iAMP21 contributes to leukaemia. The currently known commonly amplified region is 5.1 Mb.MethodsWe aimed to narrow down the common region of amplification by using high resolution techniques. Array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) was used to determine copy number aberrations, Affymetrix U133 Plus2 expression arrays were used to determine gene expression. Genome-wide expression correlations were evaluated using Globaltest.ResultsWe narrowed down the common region of amplification by combining copy number data from 12 iAMP21 cases with 52 cases from literature. The combined common region of amplification was 1.57 Mb, located from 36.07 to 37.64 Mb (GRCh38). This region is located telomeric from, but not including, RUNX1, which is the locus commonly used to diagnose iAMP21. This narrow region, which falls inside the Down Syndrome critical region, includes 13 genes of which the expression of eight genes was significantly upregulated compared with 143 non-iAMP21 B-other cases.
