Uniaxial-stress induced phase transitions in [001]c-poled 0.955Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.045PbTiO3
First-order, rhombohedral to orthorhombic, stress-induced phase transitions
have been evidenced by bulk charge-stress measurements and X-ray diffraction
derived lattice strain measurements in [001]c-poled PZN-4.5PT. The transitions
are induced by uniaxial, compressive loads applied either along or
perpendicular to the poling direction. In each case, they occur via rotation of
the polar vector in the Cm monoclinic plane and the induced lattice strain is
hysteretic yet reversible. Although no depoling is observed in the transverse
mode, net depolarization is observed under longitudinal stress which is
important for the use of [001]c-poled PZN-PT and PMN-PT single crystals in

Raising the alarm: Individual differences in the perceptual awareness of masked facial expressions.
A theoretical concern in addressing the unconscious perception of emotion is the extent to which participants can access experiential properties of masked facial stimuli. Performance on a two alternative forced choice (2AFC) task as a measure of objective awareness was compared with a new measure developed to access experiential phenomena of the target-mask transition, the perceptual contrast-change sensitivity (PCCS) measure in a backward-masking paradigm with angry, happy and neutral facial expressions. Whilst 2AFC performance indicated that the targets were successfully masked, PCCS values were significantly higher in the happy-neutral face condition than in the angry-neutral face and the neutral-neutral face conditions (Experiment 1). Furthermore, objective measures of awareness were more readily displayed by individuals with high trait anxiety, whereas individuals with low trait anxiety showed greater access to the experiential quality of happy faces (Experiment 2). These findings provide important insights into the methodological considerations involved in the study of non-conscious processing of emotions, both with respect to individual differences in anxiety and the extent to which certain expressions can be successfully masked relative to others. Furthermore, our results may be informative to work investigating the neural correlates of conscious versus unconscious perception of emotion

The Structural Complexity of (Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3-BaTiO3 as Revealed by Raman Spectroscopy
The structural phase diagram of the Pb-free ferroelectric
(Na1/2Bi1/2)1-xBaxTiO3 (NBT-BT), x<0.1, has been explored by Raman spectroscopy
at temperatures from 10 to 470 K. The data provide clear evidence for a
proposed temperature-independent morphotropic phase boundary at x \approx
0.055. However, there is no evidence for a structural phase transition across T
\approx 370 K for x > 0.055, where bulk-property anomalies appear to signal a
transition to a nonpolar or antiferroelectric phase. The results identify that
the phase above 370 K shows short-range ionic displacements that are identical
to those in the long-range-ordered phase below 370 K. These conclusions provide
a natural interpretation of the weak piezoelectric response in this system and
have important implications for the search for Pb-free piezoelectrics.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figure
Evidence for dielectric aging due to progressive 180 domain wall pinning in polydomain Pb(Zr0.45Ti0.55)O3 thin films
An evidence that the dielectric ageing in the polydomain Pb(Zr0.45Ti0.55)O3
thin films is controlled by progressive pinning of 180 domain walls is
presented. To provide such a conclusion, we use a general method, which is
based on the study of the time evolution of the nonlinear, but anhysteretic,
dielectric response of the ferroelectric to a weak electric field. A
thermodynamic model of the ferroelectric system where the dielectric response
is controlled by bending movements of pinned 180 domain walls is developed.
Within this model, the nonlinear permittivity of the ferroelectric is expressed
as a function of the microstructural parameters of the domain pattern. It is
shown that using the analysis of the time evolution of the nonlinear
permittivity, it is possible to estimate changes in the concentration of the
pinning centers that block the movements of the 180 domain walls during aging
in polydomain perovskite ferroelectrics.Comment: This version is modifed and corrected according to recently published

NA60 results on thermal dimuons
The NA60 experiment at the CERN SPS has measured muon pairs with
unprecedented precision in 158A GeV In-In collisions. A strong excess of pairs
above the known sources is observed in the whole mass region 0.2<M<2.6 GeV. The
mass spectrum for M<1 GeV is consistent with a dominant contribution from
pi+pi- -> rho -> mu+mu- annihilation. The associated rho spectral function
shows a strong broadening, but essentially no shift in mass. For M>1 GeV, the
excess is found to be prompt, not due to enhanced charm production, with
pronounced differences to Drell-Yan pairs. The slope parameter Teff associated
with the transverse momentum spectra rises with mass up to the rho, followed by
a sudden decline above. The rise for M<1 GeV is consistent with radial flow of
a hadronic emission source. The seeming absence of significant flow for M>1 GeV
and its relation to parton-hadron duality is discussed in detail, suggesting a
dominantly partonic emission source in this region. A comparison of the data to
the present status of theoretical modeling is also contained. The accumulated
empirical evidence, including also a Planck-like shape of the mass spectra at
low pT and the lack of polarization, is consistent with a global interpretation
of the excess dimuons as thermal radiation. We conclude with first results on

Low field hysteresis in disordered ferromagnets
We analyze low field hysteresis close to the demagnetized state in disordered
ferromagnets using the zero temperature random-field Ising model. We solve the
demagnetization process exactly in one dimension and derive the Rayleigh law of
hysteresis. The initial susceptibility a and the hysteretic coefficient b
display a peak as a function of the disorder width. This behavior is confirmed
by numerical simulations d=2,3 showing that in limit of weak disorder
demagnetization is not possible and the Rayleigh law is not defined. These
results are in agreement with experimental observations on nanocrystalline

Canadian Physicians' Use of Antiobesity Drugs and Their Referral Patterns to Weight Management Programs or Providers: The SOCCER Study
Antiobesity pharmacotherapy and programs/providers that possess weight management expertise are not commonly used by physicians. The underlying reasons for this are not known. We performed a cross-sectional study in 33 Canadian medical practices (36 physicians) examining 1788 overweight/obese adult patients. The frequency of pharmacotherapy use and referral for further diet, exercise, behavioral management and/or bariatric surgery was documented. If drug treatment or referral was not made, reasons were documented by choosing amongst preselected categories. Logistic regression models were used to identify predictors of antiobesity drug use. No single antiobesity management strategy was recommended by physicians in more than 50% of patients. Referral was most common for exercise (49% of cases) followed by dietary advice (46%), and only 5% of eligible patients were referred for bariatric surgery. Significant predictors of initiating/continuing pharmacotherapy were male sex (OR 0.70; 95% CI 0.52â0.94), increasing BMI (1.02; 95% CI 1.01â1.03), and private drug coverage (1.78; 95% CI 1.39â2.29). âNot consideredâ and âpatient refusalâ were the main reasons for not initiating further weight management. We conclude that both physician and patient factors act as barriers to the use of weight management strategies and both need to be addressed to increase uptake of these interventions
Zeolite-based photocatalysts immobilized on aluminum support by plasma electrolytic oxidation
The preparation and properties of zeolite-containing oxide coatings obtained
by plasma electrolytic oxidation are investigated and discussed. Pure and
Ce-exchanged natural (clinoptilolite) and synthetic (13X) zeolites are
immobilized on aluminum support from silicate-based electrolyte. Obtained
coatings are characterized with respect to their morphology, phase and chemical
composition, photocatalytic activity and anti-corrosion properties. It is
observed that all mentioned properties of obtained coatings are dependent on
processing time and type of immobilized zeolite. Coatings with Ce-exchanged
zeolite show higher photocatalytic activity and more effective corrosion
protection than those with pure zeolite. The highest photocatalytic activity is
observed for coatings processed in pulsed a DC regime for 30 minutes containing
Ce-exchanged 13X zeolite, followed by those containing Ce-exchanged
clinoptilolite. Pronounced anti-corrosion properties feature almost all samples
containing Ce-exchanged 13X zeolite
NA60 results on spectra and the spectral function in In-In collisions
The NA60 experiment at the CERN SPS has studied low-mass muon pairs in 158
AGeV In-In collisions. A strong excess of pairs is observed above the yield
expected from neutral meson decays. The unprecedented sample size of close to
400K events and the good mass resolution of about 2% have made it possible to
isolate the excess by subtraction of the decay sources (keeping the ).
The shape of the resulting mass spectrum exhibits considerable broadening, but
essentially no shift in mass. The acceptance-corrected transverse-momentum
spectra have a shape atypical for radial flow and show a significant mass
