TOD at the Street: A Human Scale Evaluation of the Socialization of Mass Transit Infrastructure

With Hawaii in the mix of a huge mass transit project, communities in Hawaii will undergo major transformations. The introduction of an elevated rail will affect the character and experience of whole communities. This research will focus on maximizing the opportunity to enhance communities through social interactions that is presented by the introduction of a rail station. Social interactions in the public realm will play a key role in the integration of an elevated rail station into existing communities. To do this the research will look at new ideas to understand the experience at the human scale to shape the relations in the overall context of a community. The project will look to not only integrate the station in the community but to maximize the potential of these spaces as an urban core. The transit stops are important nodes within the city and play a unique role in the interactions it can create in a community. Through design the typical station can be transformed into a new dynamic element to revitalize existing communities

Webometric analysis of departments of librarianship and information science: a follow-up study

This paper reports an analysis of the websites of UK departments of library and information science. Inlink counts of these websites revealed no statistically significant correlation with the quality of the research carried out by these departments, as quantified using departmental grades in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise and citations in Google Scholar to publications submitted for that Exercise. Reasons for this lack of correlation include: difficulties in disambiguating departmental websites from larger institutional structures; the relatively small amount of research-related material in departmental websites; and limitations in the ways that current Web search engines process linkages to URLs. It is concluded that departmental-level webometric analyses do not at present provide an appropriate technique for evaluating academic research quality, and, more generally, that standards are needed for the formatting of URLs if inlinks are to become firmly established as a tool for website analysis

El mercado laboral argentino en la posconvertibilidad (2003 - 2015): entre la crisis neoliberal y los límites estructurales de la economía

The article proposes to study the evolution of the Argentine labor market in the post-convertibility period, as well as its main transformations. To do this, different variables are analyzed (employment, salary, employment relationship quality, and urban informal sector evolution), based on considering land rent and the productivity lag of the Argentine economy as the structural determinants of the accumulation process of Argentine capital. The results show a significant reversal of the trends that operated since the mid -1970s, particularly toward the 1990s, so that the latter period ended with substantially better levels. However, this recovery was stagnated in 2011-2012. From a long-term perspective, this shows a working population affected by a differentiation in their reproductive conditions, much deeper than those in the past.O artigo propõe estudar a evolução do mercado de trabalho argentino na pós-conversibilidade, bem como suas principais transformações. Para isso, analisam-se diferentes variáveis (emprego, salário, qualidade do vínculo empregatício, evolução do setor informal urbano), considerando a renda da terra e a defasagem de produtividade da economia argentina como determinantes estruturais do processo de acumulação de capital argentino. Os resultados mostram uma reversão significativa das tendências que operaram desde meados da década de 1970, particularmente até a década de 1990, de modo que o período fechou com níveis substancialmente melhores. No entanto, esta recuperação estagnou no período 2011-2012, que, a partir de uma perspetiva de longo prazo, mostra uma população trabalhadora atravessada por uma diferenciação nas suas condições de reprodução, muito mais profunda do que as que existiam no passado.El artículo se propone estudiar la evolución del mercado laboral argentino en la posconvertibilidad, así como sus principales transformaciones. The chaperone connection to the origins of the eukaryotic organelles

AbstractThe heat-shock 60 proteins (Hsp60) constitute a subset of molecular chaperones essential for the survival of the cell, present in eubacteria as well as in eukaryotic organelles. Here, we have employed these highly conserved proteins for the inferences of the origins of the organelles. Hsp60s present in mitochondria from different eukaryotic lineages formed a clade, which showed the closest relationship to that of the Ehrlichia/Rickettsia cluster among the α-Proteobacteria. This, in addition to phenotypic characteristics, suggests that these obligate intracellular parasites and the lineage that generated the mitochondrion shared last common ancestry. In turn, Hsp60s present in chloroplasts from plants and a red alga, respectively, clustered specifically with those of the cyanobacteria, suggesting that all plastids derive exclusively from this eubacterial lineage

Phytochemical study and evaluation of the antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity of Cuscuta racemosa

Cuscuta racemosa Mart. is a parasitic plant of the Convolvulaceae family, used in popular medicine as an anti-inflammatory and a diuretic, for stomach and hepatic disorders, and for treating fresh wounds. This plant is popularly known as "cipó-chumbo" and "fios-de-ovos". In this study, it was chemically investigated and tested for its antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity. The flavonoid and tannin content of the dried plant were 2.79% and 2.01%, respectively. Furthermore, the 4'-methoxyquercetin flavanoid compound was isolated from the ethanolic fraction. The minimum inhibiting concentration in the antimicrobial test was 2.0 mg/ml for Staphylococcus aureus, and a DL50 of 0.231 mg/mL was obtained in the cytotoxicity experiment. The fraction directed to alkaloids was able to eliminate 100% of the brine shrimp used for the test

Transcriptome analysis of Paspalum notatum and Paspalum vaginatum under water deficit condition.

Drought is one of the abiotic stresses that most affect plant growth and productivity. Grasses of the genus Paspalum are successfully used as turf and forage in Australia, Argentina, Brazil and United States. Paspalum notatum has good forage quality, and P. vaginatum, high tolerance to salinity. In addition, their potential to tolerate drought has been described previously, making them interesting for transcriptome studies under water deficit.
