In Defense of Hispanic culture. Carolina Marcial Dorado (1889-1941): A Singular Woman in the North American Intellectual scene

This work examines the cultural bonds that were established between Spain and the United States in the first third of the 20th century. Thus it will analyze the constructive collaboration that existed between various institutions, foundations, universities and individuals – especially involving Barnard College Professor, Carolina Marcial Dorado. This cultural cooperation achieved extraordinary results, but its duration was short-lived as a result of the war situation which began with the Spanish Civil war and continued through the Second World War.  Este trabajo se propone estudiar los vínculos culturales que se establecieron entre España y los Estados Unidos en el primer tercio del siglo XX. Así analizaremos la fructífera colaboración que existió entre instituciones, fundaciones, universidades y personas –en especial la de la profesora del Barnard College Carolina Marcial Dorado-. Esta cooperación cultural obtuvo resultados extraordinarios, pero su duración fue efímera viéndose seriamente afectada por la coyuntura bélica que dio comienzo con la Guerra Civil española y continuó con la Segunda Guerra Mundial

Las mujeres y la apariencia: El cuerpo decorado, un estudio a través de la correspondencia privada (siglos XVI-XIX)

A través de estas líneas nos aproximamos, dentro de la historia de las mentalidades, a uno de los aspectos de la vida cotidiana en América: la vestimenta, y en concreto la de las mujeres, que se convirtió en signo de identidad. Cómo vestirse para demostrar honradez y status fueron los recurrentes consejos que estas mujeres recibían de sus parientes ya asentados en América. Un nuevo enfoque que nos proporciona una fuente de incalculable valor: las cartas privadas.Within the history of mentalities, items of clothing worn by women became signs of identity in daily life in the Spanish colonies. Dressing so as to demonstrate honesty and status was recurrent advice that women received from relatives already settled in the New World. Effector-mediated suppression of plant defense against biotrophs through activation of antagonistic defense against necrotrophs

Plant hormones are small molecules involved in the regulation of plant growth, development, reproduction and stress responses. Salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonates (JA) are essential for the activation of defence responses against pathogens. SA signaling is involved in triggering immunity against biotrophic pathogens while JA activates resistance against necrotrophic pathogens. The SA and JA pathways are mostly antagonistic: elevated biotroph resistance correlates with increased necrotroph susceptibility, and vice versa. Using transcriptomics to look for a functional overlap between plant gene silencing and type III-mediated plant responses we found that genes associated to JA signaling were overrepresented in the overlapping set, more so than SA-related genes. We present here the results of the ensuing analysis, showing effector-mediated activation of the JA pathway as a virulence mechanism, and establishing a novel role for gene silencing in the regulation of the JA pathway.Universidad de Málaga. Como sentían y vivían los hombres y mujeres que a lo largo del siglo XVIII decidieron abandonar su tierra natal para dirigirse al territorio americano y en concreto a Guanajuato para emprender una nueva vida.Through the intimate epistolary relationship among the emigrants, this work shows a glimpse of their daily life.
