Assessing environmental requirements effects on forest fragmentation sensitivity in two arboreal rodents
The study of the effect of habitat fragmentation on species that inhabit residual patches requires the investigation of the relationship existing between species distribution and landscape components. To understand which components of landscape mosaics are more influential for speciesâ persistence, we compared the distribution of two arboreal rodents proved to be sensitive to habitat fragmentation, the
hazel dormouse Muscardinus avellanarius and the red squirrel Sciurus vulgaris. Their occurrence in residual oak woods in central Italy was studied with nest-boxes and hair-tubes, developing a new method for hair analysis. Their distributions were analysed considering patch, matrix composition and configuration, and landscape vegetation variables. The two species showed a different degree of plasticity, with the squirrel being significantly more specialised at the landscape scale. The comparison of the two distribution patterns highlighted the influence of different ecological constraints and the existence of different strategies to cope with fragmentation. Patch size and patch attributes were generally weaker determinants of occurrence, compared to landscape metrics. The squirrel presence was significantly influenced by the presence of shared perimeter between hedgerows and woods and by the lack of isolation of the
residual patches, suggesting the use of several fragments to compensate the low habitat quality. Conversely the hazel dormouse seemed to be more affected by the internal management of the woods, and in particular by the mean DBH. Our results highlight how the recognition of the extrinsic constraints and the influence of multi-scale habitat selection may help guiding land use management, to ensure species conservation in profoundly exploited landscapes
Meta-Analysis of a New Georeferenced Database on Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Western and Central Mediterranean Seafood
The aim of this work was to collect and harmonize the results of several studies achieved
over the years, in order to obtain a database of georeferenced observations on polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Western and Central Mediterranean seafood. For each observation, some
information on the taxonomy and the ecology of the sampled species are reported, as well as details
on the investigated hydrocarbon, and spatial and temporal information on sampling. Moreover,
two health risk indexes were calculated for each record and included in the database. Through
several statistical methods, we conducted a metaâanalysis of the data on some of the species in this
database, identifying trends that could be related to the biology of the investigated organisms, as
well as to the physicoâchemical properties of each hydrocarbon and to the oceanographic
characteristic of this part of the Mediterranean. The analysis of the data showed that, at a
consumption rate like the one typical of the Italian population, seafood caught from the area
considered in the present work seems to pose a minimal risk to health. However, we also found
evidence of an increasing trend of PAH concentrations in Mediterranean mussels, pointing to the
need for constant monitoring

ont été étudiés par télémétrie dans une zone protégée du sud-ouest de la Sardaigne (Monte Arcosu, province de Cagliari: 39°09'44"N, 08°52'53"E). Quatre femelles et quatre mùles ont été équipés d'émetteurs radios. Les individus ont été suivis à différentes périodes de juillet 1994 à mars
2002. En tout 4 356 localisations ont été enregistrées. Cejeu de données a été analysé par des procédures de randomisation, avec 10 000 permutations Monte Carlo du jeu original. Les localisations d'activité ont représenté 55,6 % du nombre total de relevés. Néanmoins, nous avons observé une
grande variabilité individuelle dans les rythmes d'activité et dans les distances parcourues de nuit. Un individu isolé était essentiellement diurne alors que tous les autres étaient nocturnes. La distance parcourue chaque nuit par les femelles (922 m en moyenne) était inférieure à celle des
mùles (1 208 m). Durant les mois d'été, les chats sauvages ont montré un déclin général de leur activité et de leurs déplacements
Formal linguistics as a cue to demographic history
Beyond its theoretical success, the development of molecular genetics has brought about the possibility of extraordinary progress in the study of classification and in the inference of the evolutionary history of many species and populations. A major step forward was represented by the availability of extremely large sets of molecular data suited to quantitative and computational treatments. In this paper, we argue that even in cognitive sciences, purely theoretical progress in a discipline such as linguistics may have analogous impact. Thus, exactly on the model of molecular biology, we propose to unify two traditionally unrelated lines of linguistic investigation:
1) the formal study of syntactic variation (parameter theory) in the biolinguistic program
2) the reconstruction of relatedness among languages (phylogenetic taxonomy)
The results of our linguistic analysis have thus been plotted against data from population genetics and the correlations have turned out to be largely significant: given a non-trivial set of languages/populations, the description of their variation provided by the comparison of systematic parametric analysis and molecular anthropology informatively recapitulates their history and relationships. As a result, we can claim that the reality of some parametric model of the language faculty and language acquisition/transmission (more broadly of generative grammar) receives strong and original support from its historical heuristic power. Then, on these grounds, we can begin testing Darwin's prediction that, when properly generated, the trees of human populations and of their languages should eventually turn out to be significantly parallel
Blessing the rains down in Africa: spatiotemporal behaviour of the crested porcupine Hystrix cristata (Mammalia: Rodentia) in the rainy and dry seasons, in the African savannah
The assessment of habitat selection and temporal patterns of activity rhythms is paramount for wildlife conservation. Studies on behavioural ecology of wild mammals are particularly challenging in tropical areas, mostly when involving rare or elusive species. Despite being a common species in Italy, the crested porcupine Hystrix cristata is threatened of extinction throughout most of its sub-Saharan range. All available information on the ecology of this species has been collected in Italy, whereas no data is present in the scientific literature on spatiotemporal behaviour of this large rodent in Africa. In this work, we attempted to determine habitat selection and temporal patterns of activity rhythms of the crested porcupine in northern Benin and neighbouring countries, through intensive camera-trapping. We collected a total of 146 records of crested porcupine, 91 in the dry season (October-March) and 55 in the rainy season (April-September). Porcupines used most habitats in proportion to their local availability, while selecting rock outcrop formations (possibly used as shelter sites) and avoiding open areas, wetlands and gallery forests. A mostly nocturnal behaviour was confirmed throughout the year, with some diurnal activity at the start and at the end of the rainy season. The importance of rains in determining birth peak has been also showed, with juvenile individuals always observed at the start and at the end of the rainy season. Full moon always inhibited activity of this large rodent, most likely evolved as an antipredatory behaviour to limit encounters with potential predators (common leopard Panthera pardus, spotted hyaena Crocuta crocuta and honey badger Mellivora capensis) and humans. Poaching pressure towards porcupines in West Africa is strong. Porcupines are killed for the traditional medicine, for their meat and because they are widely considered as a crop pest. This assessment should therefore be used as a basic tool to design conservation plans to preserve this rodent species in its native range

Using Big Data Technologies for HEP Analysis
The HEP community is approaching an era were the excellent performances of
the particle accelerators in delivering collision at high rate will force the
experiments to record a large amount of information. The growing size of the
datasets could potentially become a limiting factor in the capability to
produce scientific results timely and efficiently. Recently, new technologies
and new approaches have been developed in industry to answer to the necessity
to retrieve information as quickly as possible to analyze PB and EB datasets.
Providing the scientists with these modern computing tools will lead to
rethinking the principles of data analysis in HEP, making the overall
scientific process faster and smoother.
In this paper, we are presenting the latest developments and the most recent
results on the usage of Apache Spark for HEP analysis. The study aims at
evaluating the efficiency of the application of the new tools both
quantitatively, by measuring the performances, and qualitatively, focusing on
the user experience. The first goal is achieved by developing a data reduction
facility: working together with CERN Openlab and Intel, CMS replicates a real
physics search using Spark-based technologies, with the ambition of reducing 1
PB of public data in 5 hours, collected by the CMS experiment, to 1 TB of data
in a format suitable for physics analysis.
The second goal is achieved by implementing multiple physics use-cases in
Apache Spark using as input preprocessed datasets derived from official CMS
data and simulation. By performing different end-analyses up to the publication
plots on different hardware, feasibility, usability and portability are
compared to the ones of a traditional ROOT-based workflow
Complex interplay between neutral and adaptive evolution shaped differential genomic background and disease susceptibility along the Italian peninsula
The Italian peninsula has long represented a natural hub for human migrations across the Mediterranean area, being involved in several prehistoric and historical population movements. Coupled with a patchy environmental landscape entailing different ecological/cultural selective pressures, this might have produced peculiar patterns of population structure and local adaptations responsible for heterogeneous genomic background of present-day Italians. To disentangle this complex scenario, genome-wide data from 780 Italian individuals were generated and set into the context of European/Mediterranean genomic diversity by comparison with genotypes from 50 populations. To maximize possibility of pinpointing functional genomic regions that have played adaptive roles during Italian natural history, our survey included also âŒ250,000 exomic markers and âŒ20,000 coding/regulatory variants with well-established clinical relevance. This enabled fine-grained dissection of Italian population structure through the identification of clusters of genetically homogeneous provinces and of genomic regions underlying their local adaptations. Description of such patterns disclosed crucial implications for understanding differential susceptibility to some inflammatory/autoimmune disorders, coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes of diverse Italian subpopulations, suggesting the evolutionary causes that made some of them particularly exposed to the metabolic and immune challenges imposed by dietary and lifestyle shifts that involved western societies in the last centuries
Response of high-risk MDS to azacitidine and lenalidomide is impacted by baseline and acquired mutations in a cluster of three inositide-specific genes
Specific myeloid-related and inositide-specific gene mutations can be linked to myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) pathogenesis and therapy. Here, 44 higher-risk MDS patients were treated with azacitidine and lenalidomide and mutations analyses were performed at baseline and during the therapy. Results were then correlated to clinical outcome, overall survival (OS), leukemia-free-survival (LFS) and response to therapy. Collectively, 34/44 patients were considered evaluable for response, with an overall response rate of 76.25% (26/34 cases): 17 patients showed a durable response, 9 patients early lost response and 8 patients never responded. The most frequently mutated genes were ASXL1, TET2, RUNX1, and SRSF2. All patients early losing response, as well as cases never responding, acquired the same 3 point mutations during therapy, affecting respectively PIK3CD (D133E), AKT3 (D280G), and PLCG2 (Q548R) genes, that regulate cell proliferation and differentiation. Moreover, KaplanĂąâŹâMeier analyses revealed that this mutated cluster was significantly associated with a shorter OS, LFS, and duration of response. All in all, a common mutated cluster affecting 3 inositide-specific genes is significantly associated with loss of response to azacitidine and lenalidomide therapy in higher risk MDS. Further studies are warranted to confirm these data and to further analyze the functional role of this 3-gene cluster
