    Forest Ecosystem Services: An Analysis of Worldwide Research

    The relevance of forests to sustain human well-being and the serious threats they face have led to a notable increase of research works on forest ecosystem services during the last few years. This paper analyses the worldwide research dynamics on forest ecosystem services in the period from 1998 to 2017. A bibliometric analysis of 4284 articles was conducted. The results showed that the number of published research articles has especially increased during the last five years. In total, 68.63% of the articles were published in this period. This research line experiences a growing trend superior to the general publishing trend on forest research. In spite of this increase, its relative significance within the forest research is still limited. The most productive subject areas corresponded to Environmental Science, Agricultural and Biological Sciences and Social Sciences Economic topics are understudied. The scientific production is published in a wide range of journals. The three first publishing countries are United States, China and the United Kingdom. The most productive authors are attached to diverse research centres and their contributions are relatively recent. A high level of international cooperation has been observed between countries, institutions and authors. The findings of this study are useful for researchers since they give them an overview of the worldwide research trends on forest ecosystem services

    Beach Nourishment: A 21st Century Review

    Long-term erosion is experienced by most of the coastlines worldwide, and it is usually attributed not only to sea level rise but also to the retention of sand in dams, the occupation of dry beaches by urbanized areas, the disturbance of the natural patterns of longshore drift, the mining of sand as building material for construction, and so on. Beach nourishment has evolved as the favored erosion-mitigation strategy in many areas of the world. The increasing number of people living on the coast, the safety of those people, and the high values of coastal property are all factors that have made beach nourishment a cost-effective strategy for managing erosion in many locations. However, a new scenario of sand scarcity and environmental care has arisen in recent decades. There have been a number of different and interesting cases of various aspects of beach nourishment in the last years. The purpose of this Special Issue has been to publish the different experiences and research related to this topic. After a careful review process, nine papers were included. Their thematic contributions include the use of field methods such as the use of remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) or un-manned aerial vehicles (UAV) for faster and automated mapping of the coastal area or the acquisition of geomagnetic data in marine environments; the use of multi-approach methodologies to assess the interaction between coastal structures and beaches and in particular of submerged pipelines; the need to adopt a plan for the optimal use of limited resources of available sediment from a regional perspective and the assessment of the effectiveness of beach nourishments; the understanding of the role of submerged geological control of beach profiles together with the implementation of innovative beach nourishment strategies while facing the non-trivial challenge of visualizing and communicating mesoscale modeling assumptions, uncertainties and outcomes to both coastal specialists and decision makers; and the influence of sea-level rise and erosion on diminution of beach habitats

    Remifentanilo versus propofol con infusión controlada a objetivo en sitio efecto para la sedación de pacientes durante procedimientos endoscópicos gastrointestinales: ensayo clínico controlado aleatorizado

    Background: Target controlled infusion (TCI) for the administration of anesthesia may provide a safe alternative for managing the discomfort of patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures. However, the most appropriate drug available for TCI is yet to be established. The objective of this trial was to compare remifentanil vs. propofol in TCI for sedating patients during GI endoscopy. Materials and methods: Sixty-nine patients requiring GI endoscopies were randomly distributed to receive remifentanil (n = 30) or propofol (n = 39) TCI at the effect site (e). The primary outcome was patient's satisfaction. Secondary outcomes included the gastroenterologist satisfaction, comparison of the percentage of adverse events between the two groups (occurrence of arrhythmias, major respiratory depression, bradycardia, hypotension, pain, nausea or vomiting and absence of amnesia), and the level of awareness. Retrospective registration number is NCT01746641 at Clinicaltrias.gov Results: The mean (range) of patient satisfaction with remifentanil vs propofol was 1 (1-2) and 2 (11), respectively (Chi2, p < 0.001). Pain during the procedure was found to differ between remifentanil and propofol (mean 2 vs. 1, Chi2, p = 0.042), nausea or vomiting (4 vs. 0, Chi2, p = 0.01), and absence of amnesia (29 vs. 10, Chi2, p < 0.001), respectively. No statistically significant differences were found between the two groups. Conclusion: Propofol in TCI seems to be an adequate agent for sedation of patients undergoing GI endoscopic procedures, with less adverse effects and higher patient satisfaction. Most likely, the combination of these two drugs may be synergistic and further reduce any adverse effects

The theoretical foundation, on which this approach is based, does not presuppose a particular hypothesis on the distribution of the variables. Applying the results obtained to the Multiple Linear Regression Model, measures of influence are obtained as already proposed by other authors.     A Comparison of Beach Nourishment Methodology and Performance at Two Fringing Reef Beaches in Waikiki (Hawaii, USA) and Cadiz (SW Spain)

    Fringing reefs have significant impacts on beach dynamics, yet there is little research on how they should be considered in beach nourishment design, monitoring, and conservation works. Thus, the behavior and characteristics of nourishment projects at two reef protected beaches, Royal Hawaiian Beach (RHB) in Hawaii, USA, and Victoria Beach (VB) in Cadiz, Spain, are compared to provide transferable information for future nourishment projects and monitoring in fringing reef environments. The nourishment cost at RHB was nine times higher than VB. This is partly due to lower total volume and a more complex placement and spreading method at RHB, despite the much closer borrow site at RHB. There was a significant difference in post-nourishment monitoring frequency and assessment of accuracy. RHB elevation was monitored quarterly for 2.7 years at 30 m-spaced profiles, compared to 5 years of biannual surveys of 50 m-spacing at VB. An additional problem related to the presence of reefs at both RHB and VB was estimating the beach volume increase after nourishment, due to variable definitions of the 'beach' area and high alongshore variability in reef topography. At sites where non-native sediment is used, it is imperative to understand how wave and current energy changes due to reefs will influence nourishment longevity. Thus, differences in erosion and accretion mechanisms at both beaches have been detected, though are still little understood. Moreover, discrepancies in sediment porosity between the two sites (which should be surveyed in future nourishments) have been found, probably due to differences in the nourishment sand transportation and distribution methods. In summary, more dialogue is needed to explicitly consider the influence of fringing reefs on coastal processes and beach nourishment projects

    Observation of a valence transition in (Pr,Ca)CoO3 cobaltites: charge migration at the metal-insulator transition

    X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements in Pr0.5Ca0.5CoO3 and (Pr,Y)0.55Ca0.45CoO3 compositions reveal that the valence of praseodymium ions is stable and essentially +3 (Pr [4f 2]) in the metallic state, but abruptly changes when carriers localize approaching the oxidation state +4 (Pr [4f 1]). This mechanism appears to be the driving force of the metal-insulator transition. The ground insulating state of Pr0.5Ca0.5CoO3 is an homogeneous Co3.5-d state stabilized by a charge transfer from Pr to Co sites: 1/2Pr3+ + Co3.5 \to 1/2Pr3+2d + Co3.5-d, with 2d \approx 0.26 e-.Comment: Submitted. 14 pages, 4 Figure

En el segundo de ellos se abordan temas de Física Moderna y entre las actividades de laboratorio establecidas, los alumnos realizan un experimento donde comprueban la ley de Stefan-Bolztmann determinando la dependencia funcional de la irradiancia emitida por un cuerpo negro con su temperatura absoluta utilizando un cubo de Leslie. En el presente trabajo se describe el instrumental utilizado en el laboratorio, la metodología experimental realizada por los alumnos, se presentan las mediciones realizadas y se analiza la relación funcional entre la irradiancia emitida por el cubo de Leslie y su temperatura comprobando la Ley de Steffan-Boltzmann. Además, se determina el valor de la constante de Stefan-Boltzmann (V) analizando la relación de la radiación electromagnética emitida por la cara negra del cubo con su temperatura. (hasta 6)The Physics IIIA course of the Electronic, Electric and Chemical Engineering degrees of La Plata University includes two modules of two months each. The second teaching module includes Modern Physics topics and laboratory activities where students perform an experiment to verify the Stefan-Boltzmann law where they get the dependency of the radiation of the black body with the absolute temperature of the Leslie cube. In the present work, we describe the experimental methodology, the experimental equipment and we analyze the temperature dependence of the radiation emitted by the Leslie cube. Finally, we verified the Stefan-Boltzmann law and determine the Stefan-Bolzmann constant (V) from the temperature dependence of the radiation emitted by the black face of the Leslie cube.Fil: Muñoz, Emiliano Luis.     Real-time detection of uncalibrated sensors using neural networks

    Nowadays, sensors play a major role in several fields, such as science, industry and everyday technology. Therefore, the information received from the sensors must be reliable. If the sensors present any anomalies, serious problems can arise, such as publishing wrong theories in scientific papers, or causing production delays in industry. One of the most common anomalies are uncalibrations. An uncalibration occurs when the sensor is not adjusted or standardized by calibration according to a ground truth value. In this work, an online machine-learning based uncalibration detector for temperature, humidity and pressure sensors is presented. This development integrates an artificial neural network as the main component which learns from the behavior of the sensors under calibrated conditions. Then, after being trained and deployed, it detects uncalibrations once they take place. The obtained results show that the proposed system is able to detect the 100% of the presented uncalibration events, although the time response in the detection depends on the resolution of the model for the specific location, i.e., the minimum statistically significant variation in the sensor behavior that the system is able to detect. This architecture can be adapted to different contexts by applying transfer learning, such as adding new sensors or having different environments by re-training the model with minimum amount of dataEuropean Union (UE).     Sliding mode control for robust and smooth reference tracking in robot visual servoing

    [EN] An approach based on sliding mode is proposed in this work for reference tracking in robot visual servoing. In particular, 2 sliding mode controls are obtained depending on whether joint accelerations or joint jerks are considered as the discontinuous control action. Both sliding mode controls are extensively compared in a 3D-simulated environment with their equivalent well-known continuous controls, which can be found in the literature, to highlight their similarities and differences. The main advantages of the proposed method are smoothness, robustness, and low computational cost.
