    The work is aimed to reveal as "the coffee vocation", from the highlands of the Department of Santa Ana, specifically the municipalities of Coatepeque, and part of what is now the municipality of El Congo 1933; hat was split from the first one, was where the agricultural frontier of Santa Ana  was extended, but, it wants to show part of a clientelist policy that forged and maintained the era of General Maximiliano Hernández Martínez (1931-1944), and contributed to the emergence of the municipality of El Congo in 1933.El trabajo está encaminado a develar cómo  “la vocación cafetalera” de las tierras altas del departamento de Santa Ana, específicamente los municipios de Coatepeque, y parte de lo que hoy constituye el municipio de El Congo, 1933; que se escindió del primero, fue donde se extendió la frontera agrícola santaneca. Además, quiere mostrar parte de una política clientelar que forjó y mantuvo la era del General Maximiliano Hernández Martínez (1931-1944), y coadyuvó al surgimiento del municipio de El Congo, en 1933

    Neuromuscular and mobility responses to a vibration session in hypoxia in multiple sclerosis

    The aim of this study was to investigate the acute effects of vibration training (WBVT) under hypoxic and normoxic conditions on the voluntary rate of force development (RFD), balance and muscle oxygen saturation (SMO2) in persons with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). 10 participants completed the study (30 % males, 44.4±7.7 years, 164.3±8.9cm, 65.2±11.1kg, 2.5±1.3 Expanded Disability Status Scale, 24.1± 4.0 kg.m− 2 BMI). Maximal force, RFD during isometric knee extension, static balance with eyes open and closed and sit-to-stand test were evaluated before and immediately after one session of WBVT (12 60-s bout of vibration; frequency 35Hz; amplitude 4mm; 1-min rest intervals) under both normoxic and hypoxic conditions. In addition, SMO2 of the gastrocnemius lateralis was assessed during each condition. No changes were found in force, static balance and sit-to-stand test. Time-to-peak RFD increased in the left leg (p = 0.02) and tended to increase in the right leg (p = 0.06) after the hypoxic session. SMO2 resulted in significant increases from the initial to final intervals of the WBVT under both hypoxic and normoxic conditions (p < 0.05). Increases in SMO2 during WBVT demonstrates muscle work that may contribute to the observed muscle adaptations in long-term WBVT programs without inducing decreases in neuromuscular activation, physical function and balance within a session

    Design and construction of a proportional gas flow meter with application in Mössbauer spectroscopy

    The design, construction and operation parameters of a gas flow proportional counter are presented in order to implement the integral conversion electron mössbauer spectroscopy technique (ICEMS). The detector works with the support of a multi-channel detection system and a source of highenergy radiation of 57Co. A constant gas flow of a mixture of 5% CH4 in He was used as a multiplier gas, which increased the signal intensity, and protected the sample´s surface of electric shocks. An internal filter for low energy X-rays was considered during the design to achieve a lower background noise and optimize the volume of gas consumed. With this built-in ICEMS detector it is feasible to characterize efficiently the magnetic properties and oxidation states (hyperfine interactions) of both bulk materials and thin films. The calibration of the device was performed by using an iron sample synthesized by powder metallurgy. It was successfully identified the presence of a distinctive sextet of the α-Fe phase with a hyperfine field of 330 kOe and an isomer shift of 0.312 mm / s.     El Buscador Semántico Biomédico propone una herramienta web de sencilla utilización para la identificación de terminología médica, la recuperación de literatura especializada y la exploración semántica del contenido gracias a la integración, con requisitos de tiempo de respuesta y alta disponibilidad, de ontologías médicas, técnicas de análisis de texto, reconocimiento de entidades y búsqueda de información sobre fuentes diversas externas. El resultado es una aplicación intuitiva y a la vez potente, que permite identificar la terminología médica sobre cualquier texto con un solo “click”. Sobre ese reconocimiento, se permite filtrado de sentidos y subconceptos y la recuperación de información sobre recursos como SciELO, Google Scholar y Medline. Además, el sistema genera un grafo conceptual de manera automática, que permite relacionar semánticamente los términos que aparecen en el texto.The Biomedical Semantic Information Retrieval system is an easy web solution to medical term identification, retrieval of specialized literature and semantic concept browsing thanks to the integration, with constraints in speed and high availability, of medical ontologies, text analysis, entity recognition and information retrieval from multiple sources. The result is an intuitive application, yet powerful, that performs term identification of medical concepts over any text with a simple click. Over identified terms the user is able conduct sub-concept selection to fine-tune the retrieval process over resources like SciELO, Google Scholar and Medline.     Validation of a simple method for the interpretation of uterine cytology in cows

    One of the main drawbacks of using endometrial cytology in cows is the time required for sample collection and interpretation. It is recommended to count a large number of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) and to calculate their overall percentage. However, since counting a large number of cells is a laborious method, it would be preferable to simplify the analysis by counting the number of PMN in few microscopic fields. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess whether a simple test, based on calculating the average number of PMN in 10 fields at 1000×, could be a reliable technique for the diagnosis of endometritis. Two hundred and sixty endometrial samples were taken from Holstein cows at different postpartum stages using an adapted cytobrush. Smears obtained were air-dried for fixing and stained with a Romanowsky-type procedure. To evaluate the counting method, the percentage of PMN in 150 cells was calculated as well as the average number of PMN in 10 fields at 1000×. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves was constructed to evaluate both methods, the percentage of PMN (used as reference) and the average number of PMN. It was observed that the area under the curve is (regardless of cut-off used) higher than 0.99 and the correspondence between both methods were 1.58 PMN/field for the cut-off value of 15% and 2.40 PMN/field for the cut-off value of 20%.     Subjective well-being, happiness, and environmental health factors related to women planning a pregnancy or pregnant, using mobile health intervention

    Objectives: To compare the environmental health results in women trying to get pregnant or pregnant using a mobile health application (Green Page) through healthcare professionals or self-completed by women, and to explore the relationship between the subjective well-being of these women with their lifestyles and environmental factors. Methods: A descriptive study with mixed methods was conducted in 2018. A mobile health survey was used in two phases. Phase 1 was a cross-sectional study through professionals (n = 1100) followed by phase 2, a convenience sampling through women's self-reporting (n = 3425). A personalized report was downloadable with health recommendations for the well-being of the mother and child. Results: Of the 3205 participants (mean age = 33 years, SD = 0.2 years), 1840 were planning a pregnancy and 1365 were pregnant. One in five pregnant women had a low level of happiness. Globally, subjective well-being and happiness were found to be negatively associated with lack of contact with nature, sedentary lifestyle, excess weight, environmental exposure, and older age in pregnancy. Precisely 45%, 60%, and 14% of women were exposed to tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs, respectively. The women self-reported levels of risk factors higher than when the tool was used by or through professionals. Conclusions: The use of mobile health interventions focused on environmental health during planning or pregnancy periods could help improve the quality of healthcare and foster greater involvement of women in their self-care process, thus promoting empowerment, healthier environments, and lifestyles.     Increased Th17-Related Cytokine Serum Levels in Patients With Multiple Polyps of Unexplained Origin

    OBJECTIVES: Most patientswith multiple colonic polyps do not have a known genetic or hereditary origin. Our aim was to analyze the presence of inflammatory cytokines and levels of glucose, insulin, and C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients with multiple colonic polyps. METHODS: Eighty-three patients with 10 or more adenomatous or serrated polyps and 53 control people with normal colonoscopy were included. Smoking habits were registered, and glucose, CRP, and basal insulin in the serum/blood weremeasured. Quantification of IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IL-11, IL-17A, and IL-23 cytokine levels in the serum was performed by a high-sensitivity enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: Smoking and diabetesweremore prevalent in those with colonic polyps than in the control people (67% vs 16%, P = 0.001; 11% vs 2%, P = 0.048). In addition, the cytokine serum levels were higher, i.e., IL-2 (P = 0.001), IL-4 (P = 0.001), IL-6 (P = 0.001), IL-17A (P = 0.001), IL-23 (P = 0.014), and CRP (P = 0.003). Adjusting for sex, smoking, and diabetes in amultivariate analysis, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-17A, and IL-23 remained independently elevated in cases with multiple polyps. DISCUSSION: These results indicate that immune responses mediated by Th17 cells may be involved in the pathogenesis of multiple colonic polyps

    IFNγ Response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Risk of Infection and Disease in Household Contacts of Tuberculosis Patients in Colombia

    OBJECTIVES: Household contacts (HHCs) of pulmonary tuberculosis patients are at high risk of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection and early disease development. Identification of individuals at risk of tuberculosis disease is a desirable goal for tuberculosis control. Interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) using specific M. tuberculosis antigens provide an alternative to tuberculin skin testing (TST) for infection detection. Additionally, the levels of IFNgamma produced in response to these antigens may have prognostic value. We estimated the prevalence of M. tuberculosis infection by IGRA and TST in HHCs and their source population (SP), and assessed whether IFNgamma levels in HHCs correlate with tuberculosis development. METHODS: A cohort of 2060 HHCs was followed for 2-3 years after exposure to a tuberculosis case. Besides TST, IFNgamma responses to mycobacterial antigens: CFP, CFP-10, HspX and Ag85A were assessed in 7-days whole blood cultures and compared to 766 individuals from the SP in Medellín, Colombia. Isoniazid prophylaxis was not offered to child contacts because Colombian tuberculosis regulations consider it only in children under 5 years, TST positive without BCG vaccination. RESULTS: Using TST 65.9% of HHCs and 42.7% subjects from the SP were positive (OR 2.60, p<0.0001). IFNgamma response to CFP-10, a biomarker of M. tuberculosis infection, tested positive in 66.3% HHCs and 24.3% from the SP (OR = 6.07, p<0.0001). Tuberculosis incidence rate was 7.0/1000 person years. Children <5 years accounted for 21.6% of incident cases. No significant difference was found between positive and negative IFNgamma responders to CFP-10 (HR 1.82 95% CI 0.79-4.20 p = 0.16). However, a significant trend for tuberculosis development amongst high HHC IFNgamma producers was observed (trend Log rank p = 0.007). DISCUSSION: CFP-10-induced IFNgamma production is useful to establish tuberculosis infection prevalence amongst HHC and identify those at highest risk of disease. The high tuberculosis incidence amongst children supports administration of chemoprophylaxis to child contacts regardless of BCG vaccination
