Bilateral and Unilateral Asymmetries of Strength and Flexibility in Young Elite Sailors: Windsurfing, Optimist and Laser Classes

    Get PDF
In sport sailing, performance is related to the sailor’s ability to maintain the stability of the boat, and the boat class determines the variables involved in such ability. In monohull-type vessels, such as the Optimist and Laser classes, the flexibility of the hip joint is a key performance factor. In the Windsurfing class, performance is determined by the strength of the flexors of the fingers and elbows. The performance of the sailor may be a ected by asymmetries in the strength and flexibility of the muscles and joints involved in technical actions. The objective of this study was to evaluate asymmetries in strength and flexibility in young sailors. Thirty-three young sailors (ten girls) from the Windsurfing, Optimist and Laser classes were assessed for manual strength and flexibility, by dynamometry and straight leg lift tests, respectively. The symmetry index and the functional asymmetry of compression force were calculated. The results showed no di erences between sailors according to gender. The sailors of the Laser class obtained the highest levels of manual strength, whereas those of the Windsurfing class showed the highest flexibility levels. The girls’ group andWindsurfing class had the highest percentage of sailors with strength asymmetry, whereas, the sailors of the Optimist class presented a greater percentage of asymmetry in flexibility. There were no di erences in upper limb strength and lower limb flexibility between the dominant and non-dominant sides

The controversy over the LFC: An analysis of the implications and viability of ELF ideology and the LFC.

    Get PDF
Palabras clave: xilófagos, Cerambyx, Prinobius, comportamiento, encina, alcornoque, manejo integrado.___________________________________The aim of this work is to present recent advances on the knowledge of holm oak and cork oak woodborers (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in Huelva (Andalussia, Spain). Cerambyx welensii and Prinobius germari are considered the main implicated species. We emphasize over the differences of behavior founded among them: the first species is little territorial and very movable, Prinobius seems to show a more territorial and sedentary behavior, specially the males. After the analysis of diverse options for population control of insects with similar habits, a strategy of Integrated Management is recommended, having as one of his pillars the attraction of these species for his capture and/or the specific repelence or confusion; that is to say, the applied study of semiochemicals compounds to integrated pest management. Key words: woodborers, Cerambyx, Prinobius, ehavior, holm oak, cork oak, Integrated Pest Management

Differential effects of paramomycin on ribosomes of Leishmania mexicana and Mammalian cells

Paromomycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic having low mammalian cell toxicity, is one of the drugs currently used in the chemotherapy of cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis. In order to understand the mode of action of this antibiotic at the molecular level, we have investigated the effects of paromomycin on protein synthesis in Leishmania and its mammalian hosts. We were able to demonstrate that in vivo protein synthesis in the promastigote stage of the parasite and its proliferation rate are markedly inhibited by paromomycin while being only slightly affected by other aminoglycoside antibiotics, such as streptomycin and neomycin B. Furthermore, both in vitro polypeptide synthesis induced by poly(U) as mRNA and accuracy of translation are significantly decreased by paromomycin in cell-free systems containing ribosomal particles of Leishmania promastigotes. Conversely, when ribosomes from mammalian cells are used instead of the protozoan particles, polyphenylalanine synthesis is only barely reduced by the antibiotic and the translation misreading remains almost unaltered. Surface plasmon resonance analysis of the interaction between paromomycin and protozoan or mammalian cell ribosomal RNAs shows a strong binding of antibiotic to the parasite ribosomal decoding site and practically no interaction with the mammalian cell counterpart. Our results indicating differential effects of paromomycin on the translation processes of the Leishmania parasite and its mammalian hosts can explain the therapeutic efficiency of this antibiotic as an antileishmaniasis agent.Fil: Fernández, Marisa Mariel. Cosmological solutions with nonlinear bulk viscosity

    Get PDF
A recently proposed nonlinear transport equation is used to model bulk viscous cosmologies that may be far from equilibrium, as happens during viscous fluid inflation or during reheating. The asymptotic stability of the de Sitter and Friedmann solutions is investigated. The former is stable for bulk viscosity index q1q1. New solutions are obtained in the weakly nonlinear regime for q=1q=1. These solutions are singular and some of them represent a late-time inflationary era.Comment: 16 pages Latex (IOP style); to appear Class. Quantum Gra

Individuals With Sensory Impairment (Hearing Or Visual) Encounter Serious Communication Barriers Within Society And The World Around Them. These Barriers Hinder The Communication Process And Make Access To Information An Obstacle They Must Overcome On A Daily Basis. In This Context, One Of The Most Common Complaints Made By The Television (Tv) Users With Sensory Impairment Is The Lack Of Synchronism Between Audio And Subtitles In Some Types Of Programs. In Addition, Synchronization Remains One Of The Most Significant Factors In Audience Perception Of Quality In Live-Originated Tv Subtitles For The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing. This Paper Introduces The Sub-Sync Framework Intended For Use In Automatic Synchronization Of Audio-Visual Contents And Subtitles, Taking Advantage Of Current Well-Known Techniques Used In Symbol Sequences Alignment. In This Particular Case, These Symbol Sequences Are The Subtitles Produced By The Broadcaster Subtitling System And The Word Flow Generated By An Automatic Speech Recognizing The Procedure. The Goal Of Sub-Sync Is To Address The Lack Of Synchronism That Occurs In The Subtitles When Produced During The Broadcast Of Live Tv Programs Or Other Programs That Have Some Improvised Parts. Furthermore, It Also Aims To Resolve The Problematic Interphase Of Synchronized And Unsynchronized Parts Of Mixed Type Programs. In Addition, The Framework Is Able To Synchronize The Subtitles Even When They Do Not Correspond Literally To The Original Audio And/Or The Audio Cannot Be Completely Transcribed By An Automatic Process. Sub-Sync Has Been Successfully Tested In Different Live Broadcasts, Including Mixed Programs, In Which The Synchronized Parts (Recorded, Scripted) Are Interspersed With Desynchronized (Improvised) Ones

The Relationship Between Methadone Familiarity and Methadone Opinions Among Community Corrections Staff

    Get PDF
The United States is in the midst of an opioid crisis. Fortunately, effective treatments for opioid use disorder exist (OUD); however, they are underutilized. Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUDs) decrease death by 50 %. These MOUDs are particularly relevant in the criminal justice population given that this population has a higher OUD disease burden but is less likely than the general population to receive this life-saving treatment. Research has identified negative attitudes toward MOUDs among corrections staff as a barrier to utilizing MOUDs. This thesis examines the relationships between community correction staff familiarity with methadone, one type of MOUD, and their opinions toward methadone using extant data from the Criminal Justice Drug Abuse Treatment Studies 2 (CJ-DATS 2) series. These data were collected between 2010-2012. The study was guided by the Knowledge-Attitude Behavior (KAB) model. The data are described using descriptive statistics, and I estimate logistic regressions to examine the relationship between respondent familiarity with methadone and their attitude toward methadone while controlling for other covariates. With a sample of 167 corrections employees, I found that corrections staff who agreed or strongly agreed with the statement that they were familiar with methadone had more positive methadone attitudes. Future research should examine the relationship between familiarity/knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors in other criminal justice settings and for other MOUDs (i.e., buprenorphine and naltrexone)
