However, recent literature on social and educational studies has increasingly incorporated works that integrate digital technologies and mixed methods. This novelty provides an opportunity to re-examine original contributions in the field, particularly in relation to educational innovation. Therefore, the objective of this article is to analyze the characteristics and the trends of new contributions from researchers in education. To achieve this, we carried out a systematic literature review (SLR) of 311 articles published from January 2010 to January 2020 in the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases. We worked with nine questions that explored three key themes: characteristics, technologies and designs within the realm of educational innovation. The validation for this analysis was achieved using a criterion adopted by scholars at York University, which incorporates: inclusion and exclusion, relevance and description of data, as well as peer review in the analysis. Our findings indicate that networks of co-terms, identification of educational innovations and the types of designs -currently applied in educational innovation- as well as the adoption of a mixed-method approach seem to be much better suited to underpin the required combination of strategies and processes that are interwoven in order to address the complexity of the education phenomenon in our time

The Angostura Address 200 Years Later: A Critical Reading

After the collapse of the second Venezuelan Republic project and various other military failures elsewhere, Simon Bolivar managed to seize the region of Guayana in 1817, and set in Angostura as his base for guerilla operations against the Spanish. Despite the fact that he did not control the whole of Venezuela, he assembled a Congress in Angostura and delivered there his inaugural speech on February 15th, 1819. This speech, now known as the 'Angostura Address', is a prime document in the Bolivarian canon. Unfortunately, the Bolivar-hero cult rampant in Venezuela and Colombia (and to a lesser extent in Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia), has promoted an extremely uncritical reading of this very important document. In occasion of its 200th Anniversary, this article offers a critical -yet ultimately sympathetic- reading of the 'Angostura Address'. In this speech, Bolivar laid out his Enlightenment vision of freedom, yet he also displayed an authoritarian tendency

Scientific journalism and the use of emotions in news narratives in the post-truth era: A comparative study of the United Kingdom and India

Public relations strategies based on dramatization are key tools to achieving success in electoral campaigns. Press offices play a fundamental role as theatre directors, turning their leaders into great actors. What at first glance would look like a theatrical performance is, more than ever, what happened in the US presidential elections. Newspapers are intensifying the use of visual elements to reinforce the news. This research paper analyses 2,463 articles from eight digital newspapers in four countries to learn about the impact of visuals and dramatization on the European press. It seems paradoxical that the progressive newspapers devoted more articles to Trump than the conservative newspapers. A lack of time on the part of the journalists? What is certain is that the visuals prepared by Trump’s press office and his perfectly designed public appearances, were reproduced by the media. The study shows that the progressive newspapers analysed have contributed to giving Trump greater visibility in Europe

EnglishChristine Lohmeier/Jairo Lugo-Ocando/Andrés Cañizalez: Public service broadcasting from the hand of God? The Catholic broadcasting network in Venezuela This article is a contribution to the continuous debate about public service institutions and the redefinition of public service broadcasting in the digital age. By way looking outside of Western Europe and the United States, we identify the Catholic Church in Venezuela as provider of public service content. The Roman Catholic Church in Venezuela owns a vast broadcast network with eleven radio stations, plus twenty affiliated stations. It is furthermore in possession of the television station Niño Cantores del Zulia. While state institutions have been characterised as unstable actors, the Catholic Church has delivered a reliable service in turbulent times. Radio networks such as „Fe y Alegría“ have also played a major role in providing educational content on a nation-wide scale. Measured against Western standards such as universality, impartiality and diversity, our data shows that the stations of „Fe y Alegría“ and those associated with the network are offering a first-rate service to the Venezuelan public.

Museums are born from the need to preserve historical heritage in a space where they can research and disseminate knowledge. The evolution of museum communication, together with the use of new technologies or new forms of communication, has been an unprecedented milestone between museums and their public, as it allows them to establish interactions, contributing to the development of a greater knowledge of the cultural demands of museum visitors. Social media, blogs or mobile social media fall within this new way of communicating, being used by museums to expand their dissemination and publicize their activities. The use of these networks has created wider spaces and more open museums. Therefore, social media are already being used by museums to expand their dissemination and publicize their activities, this being a clear use of what is known as "museum 2.0". This research work carries out a bibliometric study since 1976, the first year in which publications in this field were detected. Sixty-four publications have been identified in the databases, Web of Science Core Collection and Scopus, showing a mapping of authorship networks, citation and co-occurrence of keywords or scientific interrelation between organizations and countries

How Malthusian Ideology crept into the Newsroom: British tabloids and the coverage of the ‘underclass’

    Get PDF
This article argues that Malthusianism as a series of discursive regimes, developed in the Victorian-era, serves in times of austerity to reproduce an elite understanding of social exclusion in which those in a state of poverty are to blame for their own situation. It highlights that Malthusianism is present in the public discourse, becoming an underlining feature in news coverage of the so-called ‘underclass’. Our findings broadly contradict the normative claim that journalism ‘speaks truth to power’, and suggest instead that overall as a political practice, journalism tends to reproduce and reinforce hegemonic discourses of power. The piece is based on critical discourse analysis (CDA), which has been applied to a significant sample of news articles published by tabloid newspapers in Britain which focussed on the concept of the ‘underclass’. By looking at the evidence, the authors argue that the ‘underclass’ is a concept used by some journalists to cast people living in poverty as ‘undeserving’ of public and state support. In so doing, these journalists help create a narrative which supports cuts in welfare provisions and additional punitive measures against some of the most vulnerable members of society
