Topology and Dynamics in Complex Networks: The Role of Edge Reciprocity

A key issue in complex systems regards the relationship between topology and dynamics. In this work, we use a recently introduced network property known as steering coefficient as a means to approach this issue with respect to different directed complex network systems under varying dynamics. Theoretical and real-world networks are considered, and the influences of reciprocity and average degree on the steering coefficient are quantified. A number of interesting results are reported that can assist the design of complex systems exhibiting larger or smaller relationships between topology and dynamics

    Fort/ Da for ensemble

The present work consists of a composition for ensemble, Fort/ Da, and a theoretical paper that will provide insights on some of the ideas contained in the music. This work is therefore divided in three sections: concepts and materials, analysis, and the score of Fort/Da. The first chapter presents a reflection on the aesthetics behind the piece, in order to provide an overview of the techniques used in the composition. Among them, the concept of formal process and instrumental synthesis elaborated by Gérard Grisey, and the notion of complex sounds from Tristan Murail are discussed. The second part presents an analysis of the piece, which will consist on a detailed commentary on the music and its elements. The third part of the work is the score of Fort/Da

Climate and Security: Evolution in the United States Political Discourses

Climate change emerged as a high-level global issue in the Rio Earth Summit (1992). In the United States, the Clinton Administration was the first to associate climate and security in official documents. Since then, there has been an overall tendency to consolidate climate security in political discourses in the United States. Based on the Copenhagen School criteria, analysis of speeches by Post-Cold War U.S. governments (Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden), and a review of each Administration’s climate change policies demonstrate how climate securitization has evolved in the United States. Climate securitization has evolved as a nonlinear process characterized by periods of progress and reversals of narratives and securitizing measures with a strong influence of partisanship

    Indigenous Brazilian Management Practices

    Get PDF
The present research seeks to understand to what extent companies in emerging countries, specifically, Brazilian, adopt dominant management practices, the so-called Euro-American practices, possess their one, or show a syncretism between the two. Methods: Mixed research. One phase was to collect data using a survey about cultural dimensions adopted from GLOBE (House 1998) management practices and also from Brazilian academy. Another was to collect data through interviews, which were analyzed in parallel. Results: Of the seven dominant cultural dimensions, indigenous practices influenced two. Another three were influenced by dominant management practices. Two of the local dimensions, even with internationalization, merged practices with Brazilian cultural traits. Even so, the practices derived from Jeitinho diminished relative to the international relations and experience of managers. Conclusions: The paper shows the existence of powerful Brazilian Indigenous Managerial Practices such as personalism and formalism. These practices have great influence on international business negotiations. On the other hand, it also shows that there are still dominant managerial practices specially in the case of more internationalized Brazilian manager

A HORA DO DIABO: FRAGMENTS OF A FANTASTIC NARRATIVE?

Relatively unknown to the general reader and still little explored by scholars already familiar with it, the short-story A Hora do Diabo is one of Fernando Pessoa’s most intriguing texts. Due to the profuse references made in the narrative to several topics within the scope of Western esotericism, any attempt to decipher its contents would have to focus largely on its hermetic tone. Nevertheless, this paper intends to propose a different approach, that is, an interpretation of A Hora do Diabo based on Tzvetan Todorov’s theory of the fantastic. In order to do so, a few selected fragments of Pessoa’s short story are going to be examined from the perspective of Todorov’s system with the purpose of verifying to what extent the situations seen in the narrative lead to the reader’s hesitation, which in turn supports the aforementioned theory.
