Interplay between the magnetic anisotropy contributions of Cobalt nanowires
We report on the magnetic properties and the crystallographic structure of
the cobalt nanowire arrays as a function of their nanoscale dimensions. X-ray
diffraction measurements show the appearance of an in-plane HCP-Co phase for
nanowires with 50 nm diameter, suggesting a partial reorientation of the
magnetocrystalline anisotropy axis along the membrane plane with increasing
pore diameter. No significant changes in the magnetic behavior of the nanowire
system are observed with decreasing temperature, indicating that the effective
magnetoelastic anisotropy does not play a dominant role in the remagnetization
processes of individual nanowires. An enhancement of the total magnetic
anisotropy is found at room temperature with a decreasing nanowire
diameter-to-length ratio (d/L), a result that is quantitatively analyzed on the
basis of a simplified shape anisotropy model.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Tunneling in graphene-topological insulator hybrid devices
Hybrid graphene-topological insulator (TI) devices were fabricated using a
mechanical transfer method and studied via electronic transport. Devices
consisting of bilayer graphene (BLG) under the TI BiSe exhibit
differential conductance characteristics which appear to be dominated by
tunneling, roughly reproducing the BiSe density of states. Similar
results were obtained for BLG on top of BiSe, with 10-fold greater
conductance consistent with a larger contact area due to better surface
conformity. The devices further show evidence of inelastic phonon-assisted
tunneling processes involving both BiSe and graphene phonons. These
processes favor phonons which compensate for momentum mismatch between the TI
and graphene points. Finally, the utility of these tunnel
junctions is demonstrated on a density-tunable BLG device, where the
charge-neutrality point is traced along the energy-density trajectory. This
trajectory is used as a measure of the ground-state density of states
ALMA observations of the Red Rectangle, a preliminary analysis
We aim to study equatorial disks in rotation and axial outflows in post-AGB
objects, as to disclose the formation and shaping mechanisms in planetary
nebulae. So far, both disks and outflows had not been observed simultaneously.
We have obtained high-quality ALMA observations of 12CO and 13CO J=3-2 and
12CO J=6-5 line emission in the Red Rectangle, the only post-AGB/protoplanetary
object in which a disk in rotation has been mapped up to date.
These observations provide an unprecedented description of the complex
structure of this source. Together with an equatorial disk in rotation, we find
a low-velocity outflow that occupies more or less the region placed between the
disk and the optical X-shaped nebula. From our observations and preliminary
modeling of the data, we confirm the previously known properties of the disk
and obtain a first description of the structure, dynamics, and physical
conditions of the outflow.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Membrane lipids and maximum lifespan in clownfish
The longevity-homeoviscous adaptation (LHA) theory of ageing states that lipid composition of cell membranes is linked to metabolic rate and lifespan, which has been widely shown in mammals and birds but not sufficiently in fish. In this study, two species of the genus Amphiprion (Amphiprion percula and Amphiprion clarkii, with estimated maximum lifespan potentials [MLSP] of 30 and 9â16 years, respectively) and the damselfish Chromis viridis (estimated MLSP of 1â2 years) were chosen to test the LHA theory of ageing in a potential model of exceptional longevity. Brain, livers and samples of skeletal muscle were collected for lipid analyses and integral part in the computation of membrane peroxidation indexes (PIn) from phospholipid (PL) fractions and PL fatty acid composition. When only the two Amphiprion species were compared, results pointed to the existence of a negative correlation between membrane PIn value and maximum lifespan, well in line with the predictions from the LHA theory of ageing. Nevertheless, contradictory data were obtained when the two Amphiprion species were compared to the shorter-lived C. viridis. These results along with those obtained in previous studies on fish denote that the magnitude (and sometimes the direction) of the differences observed in membrane lipid composition and peroxidation index with MLSP cannot explain alone the diversity in longevity found among fishes
Quality management in heavy duty manufacturing industry: TQM vs. Six Sigma
âIs TQM a management fad?â This question has been extensively documented in the quality management literature; and will be tackled in this research though a critical literature review on the area. âTQM versus Six-Sigmaâ debate, which has also been a fundamental challenge in this research filed, is addressed by a thematic and chronological review on the peer papers. To evaluate this challenge in practice, a primary research in heavy duty machinery production industry have been conducted using a case-study on, J C Bamford Excavators Ltd (JCB), the largest European construction machinery producer. The result highlights that TQM is a natural foundation to build up Six-Sigma upon; and not surprisingly the quality yield in a TQM approach complemented by Six-sigma is far higher and more stable than when TQM with no Six-Sigma focus is being put in place; thus presenting the overall finding that TQM and Six Sigma are compliments, not substitutes. The study will be concluded with an overview on quality management approaches in the heavy duty manufacturing industry to highlight the way forward for the industry
Field effect enhancement in buffered quantum nanowire networks
III-V semiconductor nanowires have shown great potential in various quantum
transport experiments. However, realizing a scalable high-quality
nanowire-based platform that could lead to quantum information applications has
been challenging. Here, we study the potential of selective area growth by
molecular beam epitaxy of InAs nanowire networks grown on GaAs-based buffer
layers. The buffered geometry allows for substantial elastic strain relaxation
and a strong enhancement of field effect mobility. We show that the networks
possess strong spin-orbit interaction and long phase coherence lengths with a
temperature dependence indicating ballistic transport. With these findings, and
the compatibility of the growth method with hybrid epitaxy, we conclude that
the material platform fulfills the requirements for a wide range of quantum
experiments and applications
Dermatosis neglecta in a case of multiple fractures, shoulder dislocation and radial nerve palsy in a 35-year-old man: a case report

Abstract

Introduction

Dermatosis neglecta is an often misdiagnosed and under-diagnosed condition. In dermatosis neglecta, a progressive accumulation of sebum, sweat, keratin and other dirt and debris, occurs due to inadequate local hygiene resulting in a localized hyperpigmented patch or a verrucous plaque. Vigorous rubbing with alcohol-soaked gauze or soap and water results in a complete resolution of the lesion. This is the first case of dermatosis neglecta reported in a patient with multiple traumatic injuries.

Case presentation

We report a case of a 35-year-old male Caucasian of Pakistani origin, with multiple fractures, neurological deficit and immobility sustained in a fall, leading to the development of dermatosis neglecta of the left hand.

Conclusion

Early and prompt clinical recognition of this condition eliminates the need for aggressive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.</p
Waveguide manufacturing technologies for next-generation millimeter-wave antennas
Some recent waveguide-based antennas are presented in this paper, designed for the next generation of communication systems operating at the millimeter-wave band. The presented prototypes have been conceived to be manufactured using different state-of-the-art techniques, involving subtractive and additive approaches. All the designs have used the latest developments in the field of manufacturing to guarantee the required accuracy for operation at millimeter-wave frequencies, where tolerances are extremely tight. Different designs will be presented, including a monopulse antenna combining a comparator network, a mode converter, and a spline profile horn; a tunable phase shifter that is integrated into an array to implement reconfigurability of the main lobe direction; and a conformal array antenna. These prototypes were manufactured by diverse approaches taking into account the waveguide configuration, combining parts with high-precision milling, electrical discharge machining, direct metal laser sintering, or stereolithography with spray metallization, showing very competitive performances at the millimeter-wave band till 40 GHzThis work was supported by the Spanish Government under Grant TEC2016-76070-
