    Correlation Dimension of Complex Networks

    Get PDF
We propose a new measure to characterize the dimension of complex networks based on the ergodic theory of dynamical systems. This measure is derived from the correlation sum of a trajectory generated by a random walker navigating the network, and extends the classical Grassberger-Procaccia algorithm to the context of complex networks. The method is validated with reliable results for both synthetic networks and real-world networks such as the world air-transportation network or urban networks, and provides a computationally fast way for estimating the dimensionality of networks which only relies on the local information provided by the walkers

Well-posedness and asymptotic behaviour for the Bousinessq system in Rn

    Get PDF
We analyze the well-posedness of the initial value problem for a Convection Problem. Mild solutions are obtained in the weak-L p (R n) spaces and the existence of self-similar solutions is showed, while the only small self-similar solution in the Lebesgue space L p (R n) is the null solution. The asymptotic stability of solutions is analyzed and, as a consequence, a criterium of self-similarity persistence at large times is obtained.Colciencias (Presidencia de Colombia)Coordenação de aperfeiçoamento de pessoal de nivel superior (CAPES). La ampliación de la UE hacia el Este: análisis del proceso de convergencia con una perspectiva mundial

    Get PDF
This article analyzes the economic convergence in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe from a broad perspective, which will provide comparative evidence on the process of convergence for the different world regions. The extensive coverage of the database will make possible to assess the trajectory of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe before and after joining the EU. In this analysis we will apply the methodology of panel data in order to compare the results and expand the available evidence. The evidence shows that the European convergence process is maintained after the entry of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe in the European Union. Furthermore, it appears that this group of countries have managed to intensify the process of convergence in the period studied and this group of countries achieving one of the more favorable results among the world regions.

A proposal to empirically evaluate the sensitivity of the speed of convergence in the EU

This article presents an innovative methodology to empirically evaluate the response of the rate of convergence in the neoclassical growth model to changes in the conditional factors. We apply this method to test the sensitivity of the speed of convergence in the EU-15 during the period 1980-2002 to increases in human and public capital. The analysis proposes two scenarios of convergence: the first one will make it possible to estimate the effect on the speed of convergence arising from changes in the instruments in the EU as a whole; and a second scenario where the effect on the speed of convergence resulting from changes in each one of the countries is considered separately. In this way an attempt will be made to identify not only the potential of various public policies to influence European convergence, but also the role they may play in each country toward achieving convergence in the EU

Nanostructured Chitosan-Based Biomaterials for Sustained and Colon-Specific Resveratrol Release

    Get PDF
In the present work, we demonstrate the preparation of chitosan-based composites as vehicles of the natural occurring multi-drug resveratrol (RES). Such systems are endowed with potential therapeutic effects on inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis, through the sustained colonic release of RES from long-lasting mucoadhesive drug depots. The loading of RES into nanoparticles (NPs) was optimized regarding two independent variables: RES/polymer ratio, and temperature. Twenty experiments were carried out and a Box–Behnken experimental design was used to evaluate the significance of these independent variables related to encapsulation efficiency (EE). The enhanced RES EE values were achieved in 24 h at 39 °C and at RES/polymer ratio of 0.75:1 w/w. Sizes and polydispersities of the optimized NPs were studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS). Chitosan (CTS) dispersions containing the RES-loaded NPs were ionically gelled with tricarballylic acid to yield CTS-NPs composites. Macro- and microscopic features (morphology and porosity studied by SEM and spreadability), thermal stability (studied by TGA), and release kinetics of the RES-loaded CTS-NPs were investigated. Release patterns in simulated colon conditions for 48 h displayed significant differences between the NPs (final cumulative drug release: 79–81%), and the CTS-NPs composites (29–34%)

The dynamics of cyclical convergence and decoupling in the environmental performance of Spanish regions

Spain is aiming at moving towards a low-carbon economy. The success of this task will depend on the capacities of Spanish regions to follow the national energy and climate strategy and decarbonize their economies. In this paper, we analyze the CO fluctuations and links with economic activity, throughout the period 1990 to 2018, using dynamic factor and recursive estimation models. We confirm the robustness of our results by testing the stability of the estimated parameters. Our findings show that the dynamics of the pattern of synchronization and decoupling of the regions are quite similar. Nonetheless, there are significant differences regarding the comparison of levels and trajectories across regions, emphasizing the need to intensify efforts to achieve national objectives. This study highlights interest in utilizing the proposed approach for the analysis of the short-run dynamics of environmental performance. 2This research was partially funded by the URJC Third Program to Promote Research by researchers and teaching staff of the Faculty of Legal and Social Science
