Sex differences in mathematics and reading achievement are inversely related: within- and across-nation assessment of 10 years of PISA data
We analyzed one decade of data collected by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), including the mathematics and reading performance of nearly 1.5 million 15 year olds in 75 countries. Across nations, boys scored higher than girls in mathematics, but lower than girls in reading. The sex difference in reading was three times as large as in mathematics. There was considerable variation in the extent of the sex differences between nations. There are countries without a sex difference in mathematics performance, and in some countries girls scored higher than boys. Boys scored lower in reading in all nations in all four PISA assessments (2000, 2003, 2006, 2009). Contrary to several previous studies, we found no evidence that the sex differences were related to nations’ gender equality indicators. Further, paradoxically, sex differences in mathematics were consistently and strongly inversely correlated with sex differences in reading: Countries with a smaller sex difference in mathematics had a larger sex difference in reading and vice versa. We demonstrate that this was not merely a between-nation, but also a within-nation effect. This effect is related to relative changes in these sex differences across the performance continuum: We did not find a sex difference in mathematics among the lowest performing students, but this is where the sex difference in reading was largest. In contrast, the sex difference in mathematics was largest among the higher performing students, and this is where the sex difference in reading was smallest. The implication is that if policy makers decide that changes in these sex differences are desired, different approaches will be needed to achieve this for reading and mathematics. Interventions that focus on high-achieving girls in mathematics and on low achieving boys in reading are likely to yield the strongest educational benefits
Long term study of the seismic environment at LIGO
The LIGO experiment aims to detect and study gravitational waves using ground
based laser interferometry. A critical factor to the performance of the
interferometers, and a major consideration in the design of possible future
upgrades, is isolation of the interferometer optics from seismic noise. We
present the results of a detailed program of measurements of the seismic
environment surrounding the LIGO interferometers. We describe the experimental
configuration used to collect the data, which was acquired over a 613 day
period. The measurements focused on the frequency range 0.1-10 Hz, in which the
secondary microseismic peak and noise due to human activity in the vicinity of
the detectors was found to be particularly critical to interferometer
performance. We compare the statistical distribution of the data sets from the
two interferometer sites, construct amplitude spectral densities of seismic
noise amplitude fluctuations with periods of up to 3 months, and analyze the
data for any long term trends in the amplitude of seismic noise in this

Cochlear Implants in the Workplace: A Nationwide Survey
A nation wide survey of cochlear implant recipients was conducted to study how implants may impact people at work. Using a self-reporting questionnaire, recipients using four cochlear implant designs were surveyed about spoken communication on the job, overall job performance, job satisfaction, confidence in job retention and in seeking new employment, job promotion, and income. Of the implant recipients using their implants at work (106 people), the majority used their implants during all work hours and reported positive changes in their job situations. The survey results suggest that cochlear implants may help in mitigating functional limitations in the workplace resulting from profound hearing loss

Subgroup differences in situational judgment test scores: Evidence from large applicant samples
To promote diversity in organizations it is important to have accurate knowledge
about subgroup differences associated with selection procedures. However, current
estimates of subgroup differences in situational judgment tests (SJTs) are overwhelmingly
based on range‐restricted incumbent samples that are downwardly biased. This
study provides much‐needed applicant level estimates of SJT subgroup differences
(N = 37,530). As a key finding, Black‐White differences (d = 0.66) were higher than
in incumbent samples (d = 0.38)
Professional excellence: the necessary convergence of psychological variables
O estudo da excelência humana assume essencialmente dois enfoques, um deles acentuando as variáveis psicológicas dos indivíduos e outro enfatizando as aquisições decorrentes da prática ou treino deliberado. Neste artigo procurou-se integrar tais estudos, propondo que o surgimento e a manutenção da excelência pressupõem uma constelação de variáveis psicológicas que vão para além da alta capacidade intelectual. Mais concretamente, descreveu-se um conjunto de variáveis cognitivas, motivacionais e de personalidade, assumidas como relevantes na excelência profissional em diferentes áreas de desempenho e de conhecimento. No seio das variáveis cognitivas e, fazendo uma ponte com as variáveis de personalidade, destaca-se o papel da criatividade para a excelência, reconhecendo a sua particular relevância em algumas áreas de realização profissional.The study of human excellence can be described based on two main approaches focusing either on individuals' psychological variables or on acquisitions by training or deliberate practice. The purpose of this study is to integrate these models based on the assumption that the emergence and maintenance of excellence requires a constellation of fundamental psychological variables that transcend intellectual capacity. More specifically, a set of cognitive, motivational, and personality variables that are considered important for professional excellence in different levels of performance and areas of knowledge were described. Among the cognitive variables and their association with personality variables, it is worth mentioning the significant role of creativity in the pursuit of excellence, recognizing its relevance to specific areas of professional performance.(undefined
First LIGO search for gravitational wave bursts from cosmic (super)strings
We report on a matched-filter search for gravitational wave bursts from
cosmic string cusps using LIGO data from the fourth science run (S4) which took
place in February and March 2005. No gravitational waves were detected in 14.9
days of data from times when all three LIGO detectors were operating. We
interpret the result in terms of a frequentist upper limit on the rate of
gravitational wave bursts and use the limits on the rate to constrain the
parameter space (string tension, reconnection probability, and loop sizes) of

All-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in LIGO S4 data
We report on an all-sky search with the LIGO detectors for periodic
gravitational waves in the frequency range 50-1000 Hz and with the frequency's
time derivative in the range -1.0E-8 Hz/s to zero. Data from the fourth LIGO
science run (S4) have been used in this search. Three different semi-coherent
methods of transforming and summing strain power from Short Fourier Transforms
(SFTs) of the calibrated data have been used. The first, known as "StackSlide",
averages normalized power from each SFT. A "weighted Hough" scheme is also
developed and used, and which also allows for a multi-interferometer search.
The third method, known as "PowerFlux", is a variant of the StackSlide method
in which the power is weighted before summing. In both the weighted Hough and
PowerFlux methods, the weights are chosen according to the noise and detector
antenna-pattern to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio. The respective
advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed. Observing no
evidence of periodic gravitational radiation, we report upper limits; we
interpret these as limits on this radiation from isolated rotating neutron
stars. The best population-based upper limit with 95% confidence on the
gravitational-wave strain amplitude, found for simulated sources distributed
isotropically across the sky and with isotropically distributed spin-axes, is
4.28E-24 (near 140 Hz). Strict upper limits are also obtained for small patches
on the sky for best-case and worst-case inclinations of the spin axes.Comment: 39 pages, 41 figures An error was found in the computation of the C
