    In this paper, we construct the nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin(BRSTBRST) charges of spinor non-critical W2,sW_{2,s} strings. The cases of s=3,4s=3,4 are discussed in detail, and spinor realization for s=4s=4 is given explicitly. The BRSTBRST charges are graded.Comment: 9 pages, no figure

    The Optimal Confidence Region for a Random Parameter

    Under a two-level hierarchical model, suppose that the distribution of the random parameter is known or can be estimated well. Data are generated via a fixed, but unobservable realization of this parameter. In this paper, we derive the smallest confidence region of the random parameter under a joint Bayesian/frequentist paradigm. On average this optimal region can be much smaller than the corresponding Bayesian highest posterior density region. The new estimation procedure is appealing when one deals with data generated under a highly parallel structure, for example, data from a trial with a large number of clinical centers involved or genome-wide gene-expession data for estimating individual gene- or center-specific parameters simultaneously. The new proposal is illustrated with a typical microarray data set and its performance is examined via a small simulation study

    It has been shown that certain W algebras can be linearized by the inclusion of a spin-1 current. This Provides a way of obtaining new realizations of the W algebras. In this paper, we investigate the new ghost field realizations of the W(2,s)(s=3,4) algebras, making use of the fact that these two algebras can be linearized.     Evaluating Prediction Rules for t-Year Survivors With Censored Regression Models

    Suppose that we are interested in establishing simple, but reliable rules for predicting future t-year survivors via censored regression models. In this article, we present inference procedures for evaluating such binary classification rules based on various prediction precision measures quantified by the overall misclassification rate, sensitivity and specificity, and positive and negative predictive values. Specifically, under various working models we derive consistent estimators for the above measures via substitution and cross validation estimation procedures. Furthermore, we provide large sample approximations to the distributions of these nonsmooth estimators without assuming that the working model is correctly specified. Confidence intervals, for example, for the difference of the precision measures between two competing rules can then be constructed. All the proposals are illustrated with two real examples and their finite sample properties are evaluated via a simulation study

    Comparative investigation of damage induced by diatomic and monoatomic ion implantation in silicon

    The damaging effect of mono- and diatomic phosphorus and arsenic ions implanted into silicon was investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and high-depth-resolution Rutherford backscattering and channeling techniques. A comparison was made between the two methods to check the capability of ellipsometry to examine the damage formed by room temperature implantation into silicon. For the analysis of the spectroscopic ellipsometry data we used the conventional method of assuming appropriate optical models and fitting the model parameters (layer thicknesses and volume fractions of the amorphous silicon component in the layers) by linear regression. The depth dependence of the damage was determined by both methods. It was revealed that SE can be used to investigate the radiation damage of semiconductors together with appropriate optical model construction which can be supported or independently checked by the channeling method. However, in case of low level damage (consisting mainly of isolated point defects) ellipsometry can give false results, overestimating the damage using inappropriate dielectric functions. In that case checking by other methods like channeling is desirable

    Forecasting extreme stratospheric polar vortex events

    Extreme polar vortex events known as sudden stratospheric warmings can influence surface winter weather conditions, but their timing is difficult to predict. Here, we examine factors that influence their occurrence, with a focus on their timing and vertical extent. We consider the roles of the troposphere and equatorial stratosphere separately, using a split vortex event in January 2009 as the primary case study. This event cannot be reproduced by constraining wind and temperatures in the troposphere alone, even when the equatorial lower stratosphere is in the correct phase of the quasi biennial oscillation. When the flow in the equatorial upper stratosphere is also constrained, the timing and spatial evolution of the vortex event is captured remarkably well. This highlights an influence from this region previously unrecognised by the seasonal forecast community. We suggest that better representation of the flow in this region is likely to improve predictability of extreme polar vortex events and hence their associated impacts at the surface
