    X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis of Fine Atmospheric Aerosols from a Site in Mexico City

    A study was performed in the Winter of the year 2015 in a Southwestern site in the MAMC (Ciudad Universitaria), collecting PM2.5 samples with a Mini Vol. As a part of wider study focused to fully characterize aerosols at this site, an X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer (based on an Rh X-ray tube) built to analyze environmental samples, was used to characterize the sample set. A total of 16 elements (Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb) were detected in most samples and mean concentrations were calculated. Cluster analysis was also applied to the elemental concentrations to find possible correlations among the elements

    A DFT approach to the surface-enhanced raman scattering of 4-cyanopyridine adsorbed on silver nanoparticles

    A Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) spectrum of 4-cyanopyridine (4CNPy) was recorded on silver plasmonic nanoparticles and analyzed by using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Two simple molecular models of the metal\u20134CNPy surface complex with a single silver cation or with a neutral dimer (Ag+ \u20134CNPy, Ag2 \u20134CNPy), linked through the two possible interacting sites of 4CNPy (aromatic nitrogen, N, and nitrile group, CN), were considered. The calculated vibrational wavenumbers and intensities of the adsorbate and the isolated species are compared with the experimental Raman and SERS results. The analysis of the DFT predictions and the experimental data indicates that 4CNPy adsorbs preferentially on neutral/charged active sites of the silver nanoparticles through the nitrogen atom of the aromatic ring with a perpendicular orientation

    Rostral floor plate (flexural organ) secretes glycoproteins immunologically similar to subcommissural organ glycoproteins in dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula) embryos

    The subcommissural organ of vertebrates secretes glycoproteins into the cerebrospinal fluid of the third cerebral ventricle. This material polymerizes in Reissner's fiber. During ontogenetic development, besides the subcommissural organ, the ependyma lining the pontine flexure constitutes an additional Reissner's fiber-secreting gland named flexural organ. We have studied the secretion of the flexural organ and the subcommissural organ in dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula) embryos using three different antisera and the lectins concanavalin A and wheat germ agglutinin. AFRU is an antiserum against the bovine Reissner's fiber; Ab-600 is an antiserum against 600 kDa dogfish subcommissural organ glycoproteins; and APSO is an antiserum against immunoaffinity purified bovine subcommissural organ secretory glycoproteins. These three antisera immunostained the flexural organ indicating that it contains epitopes similar to those present in bovine and dogfish subcommissural organ glycoproteins. It seems highly probable that the flexural or an and the subcommissural organ of dogfish embryos secrete similar compound(s). Other ependymal regions were also immunostained with Ab-600 and APSO antisera. Then, Reissner's fiber-like glycoproteins were transiently expressed by most embryonary ependymal cells. These glycoproteins might play a role in the development of the central nervous system of vertebrates. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V

    Improvements to the X-ray Spectrometer at the Aerosol Laboratory, Instituto de Física, UNAM

    Due to the demands of better (accurate and precise) analytical results using X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) at the Aerosol Laboratory, Instituto de Física, UNAM, it was necessary to carry out improvements in instrumentation and analytical procedures in the x-ray spectrometer located in this facility. A new turbomolecular vacuum system was installed, which allows reaching the working pressure in a shorter time. Characteristic x-rays are registered with a Silicon Drift Detector, or SDD, (8 mm thick Be window, 140 eV at 5.9 keV resolution), working directly in a high-vacuum, permitting the detection of x-rays with energies as low as 1 keV (Na Ka) and higher counting rates than in the past. Due to the interference produced by the Rh L x-rays emitted by the tube normally used for atmospheric and food analysis with Cl K x-rays, another tube with a W anode was mounted in the spectrometer to avoid this interference, with the possibility to select operation with any of these tubes. Examples of applications in atmospheric aerosols and other samples are presented, to demonstrate the enhanced function of the spectrometer. Other future modifications are also explained

    Mz 3, a Multipolar Nebula in the Making

    The nebula Mz 3 has arguably the most complex bipolar morphology, consisting of three nested pairs of bipolar lobes and an equatorial ellipse. Its three pairs of bipolar lobes share the same axis of symmetry, but have very different opening angles and morphologies: the innermost pair of bipolar lobes shows closed lobe morphology, while the other two have open lobes with cylindrical and conical shapes, respectively. We have carried out high-dispersion spectroscopic observations of Mz 3, and detected distinct kinematic properties among the different morphological components. The expansion characteristics of the two outer pairs of lobes suggest that they originated in an explosive event, whereas the innermost pair of lobes resulted from the interaction of a fast wind with the surrounding material. The equatorial ellipse is associated with a fast equatorial outflow which is unique among bipolar nebulae. The dynamical ages of the different structures in Mz 3 suggest episodic bipolar ejections, and the distinct morphologies and kinematics among these different structures reveal fundamental changes in the system between these episodic ejections.Comment: To be published in the October issue of The Astronomical Journal. 16 pages, 10 figures.     The effects of nitroxyl (HNO) on soluble guanylate cyclase activity: interactions at ferrous heme and cysteine thiols

    It has been previously proposed that nitric oxide (NO) is the only biologically relevant nitrogen oxide capable of activating the enzyme soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC). However, recent reports implicate HNO as another possible activator of sGC. Herein, we examine the affect of HNO donors on the activity of purified bovine lung sGC and find that, indeed, HNO is capable of activating this enzyme. Like NO, HNO activation appears to occur via interaction with the regulatory ferrous heme on sGC. Somewhat unexpectedly, HNO does not activate the ferric form of the enzyme. Finally, HNO-mediated cysteine thiol modification appears to also affect enzyme activity leading to inhibition. Thus, sGC activity can be regulated by HNO via interactions at both the regulatory heme and cysteine thiols

    The physical parameters, excitation and chemistry of the rim, jets and knots of the planetary nebula NGC 7009

    We present long-slit optical spectra along the major axis of the planetary nebula NGC 7009. These data allow us to discuss the physical, excitation and chemical properties of all the morphological components of the nebula, including its remarkable systems of knots and jets. The main results of this analysis are the following: i) the electron temperature throughout the nebula is remarkably constant, T_e[OIII] = 10200K; ii) the bright inner rim and inner pair of knots have similar densities of N_e = 6000cm^{-3}, whereas a much lower density of N_e = 1500cm^{-3} is derived for the outer knots as well as for the jets; iii) all the regions (rim, inner knots, jets and outer knots) are mainly radiatively excited; and iv) there are no clear abundance changes across the nebula for He, O, Ne, or S. There is a marginal evidence for an overabundance of nitrogen in the outer knots (ansae), but the inner ones (caps) and the rim have similar N/H values that are at variance with previous results. Our data are compared to the predictions of theoretical models, from which we conclude that the knots at the head of the jets are not matter accumulated during the jet expansion through the circumstellar medium, neither can their origin be explained by the proposed HD or MHD interacting-wind models for the formation of jets/ansae, since the densities as well as the main excitation mechanisms of the knots, disagree with model predictions.Comment: Figure 1 was changed because features were misidentified in the previous version. 17 pages including 5 figures and 3 tables.     Effect of Aging in the Perception of Health-Related Quality of Life in End-Stage Renal Disease Patients under Online-Hemodiafiltration

    This work aimed to evaluate how aging could influence patients' perception of health quality of life (HRQOL), as well as, the effect of aging on dialysis adequacy and in hematological, iron status, inflammatory and nutritional markers. In this transversal study were enrolled 305 ESRD patients under online-hemodiafiltration (OL-HDF) (59.67% males; 64.9 ± 14.3 years old). Data about comorbidities, hematological data, iron status, dialysis adequacy, nutritional and inflammatory markers were collected from patient's records. Moreover, HRQOL score, by using the Kidney Disease Quality of Life-Short Form (KDQOL-SF), was assessed. Analyzing the results according to quartiles of age, significant differences were found for some parameters evaluated by the KDQOL-SF instrument, namely for work status, physical functioning and role-physical, which decreased with increasing age. We also found a higher proportion of diabetic patients, a decrease in creatinine, iron, albumin serum levels, transferrin saturation and nPCR, with increasing age. Moreover, significant negative correlations were found between age and mean cell hemoglobin concentration, iron, transferrin saturation, albumin, nPCR, work status, physical functioning and role-physical. In conclusion, our results showed that aging is associated with a decreased work status, physical functioning and role-physical, with a decreased dialysis adequacy, iron availability and nutritional status, and with an increased proportion of diabetic patients and of patients using central venous catheter, as the vascular access. The knowledge of these changes associated with aging, which have impact in the quality of life of the patients, could be useful in their management
