Afro-caribbean religion and rituals: Dugu, Voodoo, Santeria, and Brazilian religions/cults

This thesis will explore and discuss the religion and rituals (ancestral cult) of Afro-Caribbean societies, people of African and indigenous heritage. This thesis will also seek to answer the question of extent to which Americans have become tolerant of other people\u27s culture and what influence, if any, have transmitted from the Afro-Caribbean people to other North American societies. The religion and rituals of four Afro-Caribbean groups will be discussed in this study

The Role of Microbial Ecology in Glacier Retreat

Glaciers have been considered too hostile to harbor life for a long time. However, they are now recognized as unique biomes dominated by microbial communities which maintain active biochemical routes. Microbial communities inhabiting glaciers are diverse depending on the type of glacier and the area studied. Some glaciers have a marine margin and finish in a calving front, with partly or completely temperate tidewater tongues, this establishes important differences with respect to glaciers with a land margin. Depending on the glacier area studied, microorganisms are also characteristic as they establish a vertical food chain, from the surface photosynthesizers in upper illuminated layers to heterotrophs confined in the inner part. Glaciers are retreating in many areas of the world due to global warming. Microorganisms are their most abundant and unknown occupants. They play a main role, carrying out key processes in the development of soil and facilitating plant colonization when glaciers have ultimately retired. These microorganisms are perfectly adapted to their harsh environment and are very susceptible to environmental changes. This chapter summarizes the role of microbial ecology as indicator of the conservation status of glaciers

Group and total dissipativity and stability of multi-equilibria hybrid automata

Complex systems, which consist of different interdependent and interlocking subsystems, typically have multiple equilibrium points associated with different set points of each operation mode. These systems are usually interpreted as switched systems, or in general, as hybrid systems. Surprisingly, the consideration of multiple equilibria is not common in hybrid systems’ literature, being typically focused on the study of stability and dissipativity properties for switched systems whose subsystems share the same equilibrium point. This paper will expand the discussion to the case of having multiple co-existing equilibrium points for hybrid systems modelled as hybrid automata, which are more general than switched systems. A classification of equilibria for hybrid automata is offered, and some stability related properties are shown for them. Moreover, some dissipativity-related properties are studied. The chief idea of our approach is to identify stable and dissipative components as group of discrete locations within the hybrid automaton. Two examples are used to illustrate our conclusions

Ciberfeminismo de investigacción con y entre tecnoartistas y hackers

Investigar la relació dels gèneres i les noves tecnologies de la informació i comunicació pren importància amb el desenvolupament de la societat actual. Des del nostre col·lectiu portem a terme una sèrie d'investigacions orientades cap a la formulació, anàlisi i desenvolupament d'accions des de, amb i per a les relacions de les dones i les TIC. Per les característiques de les experiències, temàtiques i metodologies que tractem hem anat desenvolupant el que anomenem ciberfeminisme de investigacción. Per a aquest article proposem continuar explorant i mostrant els nostres processos de investigacción ciberfeminista. Partim dels inicis de les nostres investigacciones fins al moment actual i incidim en alguns aspectes que es visibilitzen millor a través d'investigacions específiques i de forma comparada. Ens centrarem, per una banda, en la investigació LeLArt sobre les experiències i trajectòries TIC de les tecnoartistes i, de l'altra, en LeLaCoders, sobre les experiències i trajectòries TIC de les dones desenvolupadores de programari lliure i / o hackers.To investigate the relationship of gender and new technologies of information and communication becomes crucial with the development of our current society. We conducted a series of research projects aimed at the formulation, analysis and implementation of actions from with and for women and ICT. Considering the characteristics of the subjects, topics and methodologies that we apply we develop ciberfeminist research processes. In this article, we propose to continue exploring and showing our ciberfeminist research processes. We depart from our first research project to move on to our current ones. In order to better delve into some methodological aspects that become clearer in a comparative and specific manner, we will focus, first, on LeLArt project, about the experiences and ICT trajectories of women technoartists, and then on LelaCoders project, about the experiences and ICT trajectories of women developers of free software and / or hackers.Investigar la relación de los géneros y las nuevas tecnologías de la información y comunicación toma importancia con el desarrollo de la sociedad actual. Desde nuestro colectivo llevamos a cabo una serie de investigaciones orientadas hacia la formulación, análisis y desarrollo de acciones desde, con y para las relaciones de las mujeres y las TIC. Por las características de las experiencias, temáticas y metodologías que tratamos hemos ido desarrollando lo que llamamos ciberfeminismo de investigacción. Para este artículo proponemos continuar explorando y mostrando nuestros procesos de investigacción ciberfeminista. Partimos de los inicios de nuestras investigacciones hasta el momento actual e incidimos en algunos aspectos que se visibilizan mejor a través de investigaciones específicas y de forma comparada.
