Isospin dependence of projectile-like fragment production at intermediate energies

The cross sections of fragments produced in 140 AA MeV 40,48^{40,48}Ca + 9^9Be and 58,64^{58,64}Ni + 9^9Be reactions are calculated by the statistical abration-ablation(SAA) model and compared to the experimental results measured at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) at Michigan State University. The fragment isotopic and isotonic cross section distributions of 40^{40}Ca and 48^{48}Ca, 58^{58}Ni and 64^{64}Ni, 40^{40}Ca and 58^{58}Ni, and 48^{48}Ca and 64^{64}Ni are compared and the isospin dependence of the projectile fragmentation is studied. It is found that the isospin dependence decreases and disappears in the central collisions. The shapes of the fragment isotopic and isotonic cross section distributions are found to be very similar for symmetric projectile nuclei. The shapes of the fragment isotopic and isotonic distributions of different asymmetric projectiles produced in peripheral reactions are found very similar. The similarity of the distributions are related to the similar proton and neutron density distributions inside the nucleus in framework of the SAA model.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures; to be published in Phys Rev

Mapping the dark matter halo of early-type galaxy NGC 2974 through orbit-based models with combined stellar and cold gas kinematics

We present an orbit-based method of combining stellar and cold gas kinematics to constrain the dark matter profile of early-type galaxies. We apply this method to early-type galaxy NGC 2974, using Pan-STARRS imaging and SAURON stellar kinematics to model the stellar orbits, and introducing H I kinematics from VLA observation as a tracer of the gravitational potential. The introduction of the cold gas kinematics shows a significant effect on the confidence limits of especially the dark halo properties: we exclude more than 95 per cent of models within the 1σ confidence level of Schwarzschild modelling with only stellar kinematics, and reduce the relative uncertainty of the dark matter fraction significantly to 10 per cent within 5Re. Adopting a generalized Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) dark matter profile, we measure a shallow cuspy inner slope of 0.6^{+0.2}_{-0.3} when including the cold gas kinematics in our model. We cannot constrain the inner slope with the stellar kinematics alone.PostprintPeer reviewe

Spatial clustering in the ESO-Sculptor Survey: two-point correlation functions by galaxy type at redshifts 0.1 - 0.5

We calculate the spatial two-point auto and cross-correlation functions for the 765 galaxies with Rc<21.5 and 0.1<z<0.51 in the ESO-Sculptor survey, and explore the segregation effects among the populations of giant (early-type, late spiral) and dwarf (dE, dI) galaxies. At separation of 0.3 h^-1 Mpc, pairs of early-type galaxies dominate the clustering over all the other types of pairs. At intermediate scales, 0.3-5 h^-1 Mpc, mixed pairs of dwarf and giant galaxies contribute equally as pairs of giant galaxies, whereas the latter dominate at ~10 h^-1 Mpc. We detect the signature of the transition between the 1-halo and 2-halo regimes which is expected in the scenario of galaxy formation by hierarchical merging of dark matter halos. The early-type galaxies largely outdo the late spiral galaxies in their 1-halo component, whereas the 2-halo components of both giant populations are comparable. The dwarf galaxies have an intermediate 1-halo component between the 2 giant galaxy types, and their 2-halo component is weak and consistent with null clustering. The present analysis indicates that the early-type galaxies are preferentially located near the centers of the most massive halos, whereas late spiral galaxies tend to occupy their outskirts or the centers of less massive halos. This analysis also unveils new results on the spatial distribution of dwarf galaxies: at the scale at which they significantly cluster inside the halos (<0.3 h^-1 Mpc), they are poorly mixed with the late spiral galaxies, and appear preferentially as satellites of early-type galaxies.Comment: Astronomy & Astrophysics, in press. 29 pages, 15 color figures, 3 table

Blood pressure and renal function responses in workers exposed to lead for up to six years

The Study for Promotion of Health in Recycling Lead (SPHERL) assessed the blood pressure (BP) and renal function (RF) responses for up to 6 years in the workers without previous occupational lead exposure. BP was the average of five consecutive readings and the estimated glomerular filtration rate was derived from serum creatinine (eGFRcrt) and cystatin C (eGFRcys). Blood lead (BL) was measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (detection limit 0.5 μg/dL). The statistical methods included multivariable-adjusted mixed models and interval-censored Cox regression analysis. The 234 workers analyzed were on average 28.5 years old and included 91.9% men. The baseline BL concentration was 4.35 μg/dL and increased 3.17-fold over follow-up (median: 2.03 years; range: 0.92–6.45 years). The changes in BP and RF were not significantly correlated with the follow-up-to-baseline BL ratio (p ≥.51 and p ≥.18, respectively). The fully-adjusted changes in systolic/diastolic BP associated with a doubling of BL were −0.25/−0.12 mm Hg (CI: −0.94 to 0.44/−0.66 to 0.42 mm Hg). Accordingly, the incidence of stage-1 or -2 hypertension was not associated with the BL change (p ≥.063). Similarly, the changes in eGFRcrt and eGFRcys associated with a 3-fold BL increment were not significant, amounting to −0.70 mL/min/1.73 m2 (CI: −1.70 to 0.30 mL/min/1.73 m2) and −1.06 mL/min/1.73 m2 (−2.16 to 0.03 mL/min/1.73 m2). In conclusion, the BP and RF responses to an over 3-fold BL increment were small and not significant confirming the safety of modern lead-handing facilities operating under current safety rules.</p

Structure and mechanism of human DNA polymerase η

The variant form of the human syndrome xeroderma pigmentosum (XPV) is caused by a deficiency in DNA polymerase eta (Pol eta), a DNA polymerase that enables replication through ultraviolet-induced pyrimidine dimers. Here we report high-resolution crystal structures of human Pol eta at four consecutive steps during DNA synthesis through cis-syn cyclobutane thymine dimers. Pol eta acts like a 'molecular splint' to stabilize damaged DNA in a normal B-form conformation. An enlarged active site accommodates the thymine dimer with excellent stereochemistry for two-metal ion catalysis. Two residues conserved among Pol eta orthologues form specific hydrogen bonds with the lesion and the incoming nucleotide to assist translesion synthesis. On the basis of the structures, eight Pol eta missense mutations causing XPV can be rationalized as undermining the molecular splint or perturbing the active-site alignment. The structures also provide an insight into the role of Pol eta in replicating through D loop and DNA fragile sites
