A fast data acquisition system for the study of transient events by high repetition rate time-of-flight mass spectrometry
Recent advances in commercially available data acquisition electronics embodying high speed A/D conversion coupled to increased memory storage have now made practical (at least within time intervals of a third of a millisecond or more) the capturing of all of the data generated by a high repetition rate time-of-flight mass spectrometer producing complete spectra every 25 to 35 microseconds. Such a system was assembled and interfaced with a personal computer for control and management of data. The applications are described for recording time-resolved spectra of individual vapor plumes induced from the pulsed-laser heating of material. Each laser pulse triggers the system to generate automatically a 3-dimensional (3-D) presentation of the time-resolved spectra with m/z labeling of the major mass peaks, plus an intensity versus time display of both the laser pulse and the resulting vapor pulse. The software also permits storing of data and its presentation in various additional forms
Synopsis of a computer program designed to interface a personal computer with the fast data acquisition system of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer
Briefly described are the essential features of a computer program designed to interface a personal computer with the fast, digital data acquisition system of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The instrumentation was developed to provide a time-resolved analysis of individual vapor pulses produced by the incidence of a pulsed laser beam on an ablative material. The high repetition rate spectrometer coupled to a fast transient recorder captures complete mass spectra every 20 to 35 microsecs, thereby providing the time resolution needed for the study of this sort of transient event. The program enables the computer to record the large amount of data generated by the system in short time intervals, and it provides the operator the immediate option of presenting the spectral data in several different formats. Furthermore, the system does this with a high degree of automation, including the tasks of mass labeling the spectra and logging pertinent instrumental parameters
Should I stay or should I go? Exploring the job preferences of allied health professionals working with people with disability in rural Australia
Introduction: The uneven distribution of allied health professionals (AHPs) in rural and remote Australia and other countries is well documented. In Australia, like elsewhere, service delivery to rural and remote communities is complicated because relatively small numbers of clients are dispersed over large geographic areas. This uneven distribution of AHPs impacts significantly on the provision of services particularly in areas of special need such as mental health, aged care and disability services.
Objective: This study aimed to determine the relative importance that AHPs (physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists and psychologists â âtherapistsâ) living in a rural area of Australia and working with people with disability, place on different job characteristics and how these may affect their retention.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using an online questionnaire distributed to AHPs working with people with disability in a rural area of Australia over a 3-month period. Information was sought about various aspects of the AHPsâ current job, and their workforce preferences were explored using a bestâworst scaling discrete choice experiment (BWSDCE). Conditional logistic and latent class regression models were used to determine AHPsâ relative preferences for six different job attributes.
Results: One hundred ninety-nine AHPs completed the survey; response rate was 51 %. Of those, 165 completed the BWSDCE task. For this group of AHPs, âhigh autonomy of practiceâ is the most valued attribute level, followed by âtravel BWSDCE arrangements: one or less nights away per monthâ, âtravel arrangements: two or three nights away per monthâ and âadequate access to professional developmentâ. On the other hand, the least valued attribute levels were âtravel arrangements: four or more nights per monthâ, âlimited autonomy of practiceâ and âminimal access to professional developmentâ. Except for âsome job flexibilityâ, all other attributes had a statistical influence on AHPsâ job preference. Preferences differed according to age, marital status and having dependent children.
Conclusions: This study allowed the identification of factors that contribute to AHPsâ employment decisions about staying and working in a rural area. This information can improve job designs in rural areas to increase retention
Nonlinear Scattering of a Bose-Einstein Condensate on a Rectangular Barrier
We consider the nonlinear scattering and transmission of an atom laser, or
Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) on a finite rectangular potential barrier. The
nonlinearity inherent in this problem leads to several new physical features
beyond the well-known picture from single-particle quantum mechanics. We find
numerical evidence for a denumerably infinite string of bifurcations in the
transmission resonances as a function of nonlinearity and chemical potential,
when the potential barrier is wide compared to the wavelength of oscillations
in the condensate. Near the bifurcations, we observe extended regions of
near-perfect resonance, in which the barrier is effectively invisible to the
BEC. Unlike in the linear case, it is mainly the barrier width, not the height,
that controls the transmission behavior. We show that the potential barrier can
be used to create and localize a dark soliton or dark soliton train from a

Effects of augmented exercise therapy time after stroke: a meta-analysis
<p><b>Background and Purpose:</b> To present a systematic review of studies that addresses the effects of intensity of augmented exercise therapy time (AETT) on activities of daily living (ADL), walking, and dexterity in patients with stroke.</p>
<p><b>Summary of Review:</b> A database of articles published from 1966 to November 2003 was compiled from MEDLINE, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PEDro, DARE, and PiCarta using combinations of the following key words: stroke, cerebrovascular disorders, physical therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, exercise therapy, rehabilitation, intensity, doseâresponse relationship, effectiveness, and randomized controlled trial. References presented in relevant publications were examined as well as abstracts in proceedings. Studies that satisfied the following selection criteria were included: (1) patients had a diagnosis of stroke; (2) effects of intensity of exercise training were investigated; and (3) design of the study was a randomized controlled trial (RCT). For each outcome measure, the estimated effect size (ES) and the summary effect size (SES) expressed in standard deviation units (SDU) were calculated for ADL, walking speed, and dexterity using fixed and random effect models. Correlation coefficients were calculated between observed individual effect sizes on ADL of each study, additional time spent on exercise training, and methodological quality. Cumulative meta-analyses (random effects model) adjusted for the difference in treatment intensity in each study was used for the trials evaluating the effects of AETT provided. Twenty of the 31 candidate studies, involving 2686 stroke patients, were included in the synthesis. The methodological quality ranged from 2 to 10 out of the maximum score of 14 points. The meta-analysis resulted in a small but statistically significant SES with regard to ADL measured at the end of the intervention phase. Further analysis showed a significant homogeneous SES for 17 studies that investigated effects of increased exercise intensity within the first 6 months after stroke. No significant SES was observed for the 3 studies conducted in the chronic phase. Cumulative meta-analysis strongly suggests that at least a 16-hour difference in treatment time between experimental and control groups provided in the first 6 months after stroke is needed to obtain significant differences in ADL. A significant SES supporting a higher intensity was also observed for instrumental ADL and walking speed, whereas no significant SES was found for dexterity.</p>
<p><b>Conclusion:</b> The results of the present research synthesis support the hypothesis that augmented exercise therapy has a small but favorable effect on ADL, particularly if therapy input is augmented at least 16 hours within the first 6 months after stroke. This meta-analysis also suggests that clinically relevant treatment effects may be achieved on instrumental ADL and gait speed.</p>
Criminal Law: Customerâs Permanent Exclusion From Retail Store Due to Prior Shoplifting Arrests Held Enforceable Under Criminal Trespass Statute
In interpretive research, trustworthiness has developed to become an important alternative for measuring the value of research and its effects, as well as leading the way of providing for rigour in the research process. The article develops the argument that trustworthiness plays an important role in not only effecting change in a research projectâs original setting, but also that trustworthy research contributes toward building a body of knowledge that can play an important role in societal change. An essential aspect in the development of this trustworthiness is its relationship to context. To deal with the multiplicity of meanings of context, we distinguish between contexts at different levels of the research project: the domains of the researcher, the collective, and the individual participant. Furthermore, we argue that depending on the primary purpose associated with the collective learning potential, critical potential, or performative potential of phenomenographic research, developing trustworthiness may take different forms and is related to aspects of pedagogical legitimacy, social legitimacy, and epistemological legitimacy. Trustworthiness in phenomenographic research is further analysed by distinguishing between the internal horizon â the constitution of trustworthiness as it takes place within the research project â and the external horizon, which points to the impact of the phenomenographic project in the world mediated by trustworthiness

We continue our study of colligative properties of solutions initiated in
math-ph/0407034. We focus on the situations where, in a system of linear size
, the concentration and the chemical potential scale like and
, respectively. We find that there exists a critical value \xit such
that no phase separation occurs for \xi\le\xit while, for \xi>\xit, the two
phases of the solvent coexist for an interval of values of . Moreover, phase
separation begins abruptly in the sense that a macroscopic fraction of the
system suddenly freezes (or melts) forming a crystal (or droplet) of the
complementary phase when reaches a critical value. For certain values of
system parameters, under ``frozen'' boundary conditions, phase separation also
ends abruptly in the sense that the equilibrium droplet grows continuously with
increasing and then suddenly jumps in size to subsume the entire system.
Our findings indicate that the onset of freezing-point depression is in fact a

"Oh! What a tangled web we weave": Englishness, communicative leisure, identity work and the cultural web of the English folk morris dance scene
In this paper, we consider the relationship between Englishness and the English folk morris dance scene, considering how the latter draws from and reinforces the former. Englishness is considered within the context of the cultural web; a tool more often applied to business management but linked to a sociological viewpoint here. By doing so, we draw the connections between this structured business model and the cultural identity of Englishness. Then, we use the framework of the cultural web and theories of leisure, culture and identity to understand how morris dancers see their role as dancers and âcommunicative leisureâ agents in consciously defending Englishness, English traditions and inventions, the practices and traditions of folk and morris, and the various symbolic communities they inhabit. We argue that most morris dancers in our research become and maintain their leisured identities as dancers because they are attracted to the idea of tradition â even if that tradition is invented and open to change
'The show must go on': Event dramaturgy as consolidation of community
Event dramaturgy and cultural performance have not been examined in the literature from a strategic standpoint of fostering the social value of events. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore the case of the Water Carnival, a celebratory event in a rural community of Southwest Texas, demonstrating the essence of this event as a symbolic social space, wherein event participants instantiate a shared and valued sense of community. A hermeneutical approach was employed, interpreting the event and its symbolisms as a text, combined with findings from ethnographic fieldwork, including participant observation, in-depth interviews and analysis of archival documents. The study examines the ways that dramaturgy in the Water Carnival helps frame the ongoing public discourse for community improvement and enhances social capital. The implications of the study for social leverage of events are discussed. It is suggested that a foundation for strategic social planning is the understanding of events as symbolic social spaces and their embeddedness in community development, which can be accomplished when events are pertinent to public discourse, address community issues, represent an inclusive range of stakeholders, and promote cooperation
A Binary Millisecond Pulsar in Globular Cluster NGC6544
We report the detection of a new 3.06 ms binary pulsar in the globular
cluster NGC6544 using a Fourier-domain ``acceleration'' search. With an implied
companion mass of ~0.01 solar masses and an orbital period of only P_b~1.7
hours, it displays very similar orbital properties to many pulsars which are
eclipsed by their companion winds. The orbital period is the second shortest of
known binary pulsars after 47 Tuc R. The measured flux density of 1.3 +/- 0.4
mJy at 1332 MHz indicates that the pulsar is almost certainly the known
